I Love Jesus
That's what's on the signs that have been popping up around my area. I wouldn't really mind, but the last time religious propaganda were showing up on people's lawns was when the Christians were trying to get the 10 Commandments posted in the schools, so of course I'm a bit suspicious. Can anyone out there blame me?

1. I have absolutely no problem with people expressing
their religious beliefs on their own private property. I don't how it's any different than the Tibetan prayer flags we fly in our garden.

The last time something like this happened, they were trying to get the 10 Commandmants posted in the area schools. Isn't that reason for concern?

17. I just assume that
Christian extremists are _always_ trying to push the 10 Commandments/Prayer-in-public-schools agenda. At least if they're advertising their position in their yards, you know who might be the most likely to show up at the next school board meeting with plans to indoctrinate your kid.

The funny thing is, there's no teacher or administrator on earth who can keep a kid from praying in school, so I don't understand exactly what Christian extremists want, unless it's the right to have a captive Sunday School audience at taxpayer expense. My view is, if folks want their kids to look at the 10 Commandments a brazilian times a day, print out a copy and instruct the kids to look at them; or enroll them in a private school; or home-school them. But don't disrespect non-Christian families by subjecting their kids to your religious ideology.

29. why do they need that in public schools?
there are plenty of christian/religious schools
they should send their kids to one of those.
If they want their kids to learn intelligent
design in school.. send them to religious schools
or well.. sunday school.. isn't that what that is
for?

31. That's what I said.
I don't pretend to know the spiritual needs of any kid but, in any event, I believe public schools exist to meet educational needs, rather than spiritual needs. I believe spiritual needs are parental responsibilities, not teachers' (or taxpayers') responsibilities.

My view is, if folks want their kids to look at the 10 Commandments a brazilian times a day, print out a copy and instruct the kids to look at them; or enroll them in a private school; or home-school them. 38. It's the anti-choice attitude all right.
They care about fetuses. But, once babies are born, it's ok to traumatize them with giant, gory photos.

Sick, sick, sick. I'm so glad my kids didn't see that truck when they were little, I know it's been around for a while.

45. not seeing anything except a little box with an "x"--but then, we have
one of those fools parked outside our local PP every friday and saturday--all the neighbors hate it, and complain, but are told that this is "free speech" (although we did get them busted on the open container law for their mass)

the first time I saw the "pictures" I walked over to this nutbar, and said, "nice job--I see you can work photoshop almost as well as I can--because not one of those images is real" he got very upset with me.

so yes, you can use the v-chip and parental controls, and make sure you have no porn in the house, but your kids can see these horrid, hateful images under the guise of "free speech" and, if your community is as in thrall to the reichwingnuts as this one is, there isn't anything the police or courts or city council will do about it.

Does every atheist on the internet spell it this way? For years, I've thought it was a simple spelling mistake, but it's so widespread I just have to assume it's done to strike at the idea of a "theist" by intentionally mixing up the vowels...

Absolutely PLASTERED with I love Jesus sentiments. They crack me up.

I don't care what people put in their yard.

I myself have a statue of Pan, (he looks great on my little hill paying his flute-- and a few others, I'm a sucker for pagan staturary) and am looking for one of Kali.
One of my neighbors has a nekked David,(I think, that's who it is, I forget which classic scuplture he is) penis and everything. I, of course avert my eyes everytime I pass by, wouldn't do for me to see a penis out in the open like that...

It's my fondest wish and hope that these people are merely expressing their honest feelings of faith, rather than preparing to inflict them forceably on you....
But wish in one hand and shit in the other as they say, and see which one fills first.

in some neighborhoods. I could call myself an Atheist, but it would be more accurate to just say, "'Don't know, 'don't care." The statues don't bother me. However, a sign saying "I love Jesus," is really obnoxious and strikes me as quite aggressive (and tackier than a lawn ornament).

Maybe I should make a sign--"I love catnhatnh's idea."

I think the most effective route would be not to be mocking but be just sort of confusing--my favorite is your "I Love a Parade." It's so nonconfrontational yet so WTF????

The irritating thing to me, as a Christian (who mentions it here anonymously but would never ever ever ever, like, BRAG about it in person), is wondering what on earth are we supposed to think about the person with a lawn sign saying "I love Jesus"-- like that makes them SPECIAL? Uniquely wise, insightful, and perspicacious? Do they have some insight that the rest of us who prefer to keep our innermost feelings private simply are not privy to?

Well, okay, Philistines who stand on the corners waving their faith in our faces, here ya go:

:applause:

Good for you.

65.  I love grilled Jesus.
Specially grilled Jesus with bacon. They'll never wreck that for me! :P

69. I truly like and respect Jesus, but in my own way.
I think he had a very wry sense of humor, too, and would think a well turned joke would be funny, especially if about him.

Around fundies I like to say "Jesus died so I could eat bacon sandwiches."

67.  Jesus was/is OK
I totally get what you mean, but a message of peace and love and forgiveness and caring is ALWAYS good, no matter who usurps it.

There are a lot of us REAL Christians here on DU. You know, who care about other people and stuff (just like non-Christians do, like any good people of any faith or nonfaith do). I really believe that this type of Christian is in the majority--it's just that stinkin' peer pressure that makes them afraid to come out and say so.

peace and love and forgiveness and caring. They're my *human* values. It's fine with me that Jesus espoused them as well. I've nothing against Jesus, his followers have fucked it all up to the point I can't listen anymore when people talk about him in some holier-than-thou bullshit way.

66. I love Jesus, too.
I love his teachings, and he's the person I admire most. He would still be revolutionary, still be shunned by Dems and Pubs alike.

But I don't care for the religions that have claimed his name.

72. Xtians have made "I love Jesus" into a threat ... and a lie.
I'm sure Jesus would "love" to see his name used like that.
