What Scalia said the gesture meant, "Va f'an culo" isn't "fuck you" as he said, but more along the lines of "go get buttfucked." The gesute should have been translated as "Il non mi frega niente," or "I don't give a fuck."

I learned a lot of good stuff in 20+ years of shopping in the North End of Boston.

The man is disinhibited, and that's not a good sign for his mental status. Combine this with some of the outrageous statements he's made lately about orgies and other topics, and you'll get the picture of somebody who might be in some serious trouble. His judgement is seriously impaired.

Sad really. He needs to retire, but he's so arrogant he'll probably have to be carried out feet first, babbling incoherently, before he or his family will admit anything's wrong.

A lot of reactionary types on this board posted it as though he'd flipped the middle finger. Very misleading. In this country, one is considered far more obscene than the other. I think he was being an ass, but not obscene.

edited to add: The above incident occurred as Justice Scalia was leaving (but still within) The Holy Cross Cathedral, Boston, Massachusetts, after attending a "Red Mass" as well as reportedly having received Holy Communion, on Sunday, March 26, 2006.

There's another incident on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, caught on video (.wmv format) while Scalia was giving a lecture, Q&A, and a short interview at his Roman Catholic alma mater, the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Whether the flipping of the entire hand under the chin and extending the hand outward and downward in a flicking motion is the Italian equivalent to FU . . . why not read about it as it's reported in the newspaper hyperlinks instead of guessing about the issue?
