4. Pease help us!
We are being overrun by right-wing religious dickheads "from overseas"! Please bring us Freedom and Democracy because we have no experience of such thing and we have nothing left to live for. Fuck, the biggest threat to our cultures started the day that McDonalds moved in and Starbucks and WalMart are attacking the rest.

6. You know, Mr. B, I never thought this would happen,
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 06:15 AM by tenshi816
but just last week my son told me that a Starbucks is going to open up in our little town - Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Ilkley, with the moor and Darwin's house and the Victorian spa at White Wells and Betty's Tea Rooms. Having a Starbucks just feels so, so wrong. At least we don't have any fast food places...yet.

If Europe is "dying", then these things are what's helping to kill it.

Edited to add: I couldn't stand it anymore. I just went to Santorum's website and sent him an e-mail telling him he's an ignorant ass who is only able to spout his drivel because his target audiences are even more ignorant and ill-informed than he is. I feel better now.

9. Try not to knock Vienna Coffee. We in Boston were doing this in 50's
Getting up early to make a trip to Harvard and the Vienna Coffee shops. And we were teen-ages. It is odd it took so long to get with it and I guess Star bucks did to a point.

12. The thing is,
we already have our own coffee shops, individually owned and with character all their own (and some damn fine coffee). There's nothing Starbucks can bring to our town that will be any better than what we already have.

The town where I live has been around (although with a different name originally) since the Romans first built a fort there in the year 79 A.D. It later became prominent as a Victorian spa town (Charles Darwin was undergoing hydropathic treatment here when Origin of Species was published, and there's a Darwin Park in his honor very near where I live) and the town still retains a strong Victorian flavor. I'm not so set in my ways that I want it to be a living museum, but neither do I want the qualities I love about my adopted home to be diluted by an influx of American franchises. If I wanted that, I'd never have left the States to begin with.

18. I really like the small old types best my self.
I bet Star bucks is like a Wal-mart coming in. The problem seems to be the Star bucks push out those small places. Change always happens and it is not always a happy thing to every one but if it pleases enough it just happens. I read all the time about small places in Vermont trying to hold Wal-mart back and I feel sorry for these small cities as you know the big guys usually win. Some places in Maine have just made these fast food places adapt to the local looks in hopes it will be better. I am not sure that works either. The town I grew up in, which is the oldest Inc. town in the USA, just will not let them in or very slowly. They like the old look of 1600, and 1700 homes, church and jail. It an old town meeting sort of town so they do have a little more power to keep what the people want to keep out, out. Usually money will end all that and one hardly can enjoy the coast any more in that town for the rich moving in and pushing every thing else off the coast line.

19. I'm hoping my town is like yours,
in trying to retain its "look". I don't want to see it become like so many other towns, with fine old buildings being replaced by shiny, soulless new ones. Fortunately there's not as much of that in the UK as in the States, or at least not yet. Whenever I'm back in the US I'm always shocked by the proliferation of strip malls and the like.

In Georgia, where I'm from originally, once you get out of Atlanta one town looks pretty much like another, all fast food and shopping outlets. Places I remember as cow pastures are now subdivisions. I had a big surprise last year of discovering that an ex-boyfriend (my first "important" relationship) is a highly successful property developer, having built subdivisions over the last 15 years with more than 350 houses in one Georgia county. He's very proud of himself, but to me he's responsible for spreading the blight.

21. Oh you see lots of the mall stuff in NE also but-----------
Some places are really trying to hold on. Portsmouth NH looks better than it did when I grew up or the down town part does and it has pushed all the glass places out side of the down town. That also sort of works. Newburyport,mA. did the same. Lots of small places seem to be doing that. Old does not make any thing bad and we hope we can keep the good old stuff so it fits in with the good new stuff. I sure have trouble with Malls and have not been in one in about 10 years. I fear they are so warm I never can figure out what to do with my coat and I end up getting very dizzy. Odd as I owned a store in on for years.

15. Yep, and the original in Harrogate.
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 06:43 AM by tenshi816
I don't go in there much myself locally because at the weekend it's full of day-trippers and during the week I just don't often trek down from my perch overlooking Ilkley except to do the school run. I do like going in and buying cakes at the front though.

There are two Betty's in Harrogate, and aren't there two in York as well?

Edited to add that I just looked up the website and got the answer to my question - I was thinking about "Little Betty's" as the second Betty's in York.

Also to add a link if anybody's curious about what Mr Blur and I are talking about.

16. "All restaurants are Taco Bells"
Here in the future (after the franchise wars), "all restaurants are Taco Bells.”

And all our taxes are spent on enriching the already-rich.

And all our politicians are Republican Dickheads.

(Maybe there's some kind of weird cause-and-effect going on there?)

8. And yet the "war on christianity" rages on....
"More people go to church on sunday than to all of American sporting events combined". DAMN that war on christianity! It's making it damned near impossible for people to worship as they please anymore! :eyes:

Sphinctorum is a grade A, down the road, full tilt bozo mental case. And Pennsylvania didn't find Sphinctorum, he found them/ He couldn't get elected in his home state of Virginia so he thought he's try to pull the wool over the people of Pennsylvania's eyes. He succeeded........once. Right now it looks doubtful that they'll be fooled by this festering carbuncle again.

Sphinctorum is the kind of guy that probably got the shit kicked out of him on a regular basis when he was a kid. I've never hit a person in my life (55 years) and have been quite proud of that fact, but I'd gladly give up my pacifist ways for a shot at Sphinctorum. He's the epitome of shyster politicians, using religion and his phony "moral superiority" as a tool to manipulate and brainwash those he seeks to support him. 55 years of peaceful existence on this planet with my fellow humans.....and I'd give it all up for one shot at this pompous, holier than thou shit stain! :grr:

Has he actually been to western Europe? I go regularly and am in love with the culture. I also love the fact that you are free of the in-your-face religion that is taking over America.

13. santorum says Europeans have nothing to live for?
This guy, who basically wants to strip us of our rights, make homosexuality against the law, who brings his dead baby home for his child to hold, who is crazy beyond belief thinks Europe has nothing to live for? My God, he wants US to have nothing to live for.

Picture President Santorum. :scared: Now, if that happens, there will be truly nothing to live for.
