Internet Explorer users can now add a DU button to their Google Toolbar
A new DUer (who wishes to remain anonymous but nonetheless deserves plenty of kudos for this) has created a custom DU button for Google Toolbar Beta.

The button allows you to quickly site-search DU, gives one-click access to the DU home page, and incorporates the RSS feed from our Latest Breaking News forum.

Simply clicking the button's drop-down icon will display the titles of the 40 most recent threads posted in LBN, and mousing over each title will display the first few sentences of the story. Perfect for sneaking a peek at DU's LBN forum while at work ;)

System requirements:

Windows XP/2000
Internet Explorer 6
Google Toolbar Beta (available here: http://toolbar.google.com/T4)

If your system meets the above requirements, you can install the button by visiting this link:

http://toolbar.google.com/buttons/add?url=http://democraticunderground.com/du-google-button.xml

Unfortunately Google's custom buttons are only compatible with Internet Explorer at the moment, but hopefully Google will provide functionality for Firefox, Netscape and other browsers soon.

Thanks once again to the anonymous DUer who created this button!

5. The RSS feed is a terrific idea; sometimes I can't bring up the page --
-- due to whoever is looking over my shoulder at work. However, a quick click-and-check with the button will make things easier!

6. I think this is a good thing
But I will not be using it for technical reasons. I never use it but other people who use it always end up getting tons of spyware on their computer from the Google Toolbar.

I am guessing this is a COM object button being added. Is there a way to make this an IE add-on without using the Google Toolbar?

9. Rollyo for Firefox lets you build your own customized searched list
http://www.rollyo.com/firefox_search.html

It will search up to 25 sites with one click, from a list you create yourself. Pretty cool.

I'll totally use one if someone can make a Firefox version. I hate IE and it gives me horrible spyware and popups. But the DUer who invented this is brilliant, so kudos to him/her! I join the masses clamoring for a Firefox version!

19. This will probably annoy
someone named Rick Moran of I belive "Rightwingnuts.com". Did anyone happen to catch him opposite Taylor Marsh on CSPAN on Sunday, April 2nd? Old Rick gave Democratic Underground an "honorable" mention. He of course said this site was too far left and that you all are always comparing The President to Adolph Hitler! I about dropped over laughing. This coming from the party who "Swift Boated" a true Veteran (Kerry) and posted pictures of Osama Bin Laden alongside pictures of Veteran Max Cleland! I guess doing something like that is okay only if you do it to someone on the left.

It seems obvious that if Rick Moran mentioned this site on the show Sunday morning he is a frequent visitor to this site. Let's all send him our best, and I for one hope he makes it to the Top 10 Conservative Idiots. The TTCI is by far the best of all of the liberal sites that I visit. So Rick - ENJOY!!!

Netscape Navigator 7.x (since 6.x) has a "personal toolbar" in its bookmarks, that display just below the Location bar. DU has been in mine for years. :)

Just left click on the DU icon and drag it to the button left corner of the toolbar and release. OR use a better browser like Firefox and make DU your homepage and it will automatically show up on your tool bar.
The google toolbar is a great addition for anyone (still) using IE.

34. I've heard google toolbar is something to be avoided at all cost ...
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 06:22 PM by lindisfarne
With the advanced features enabled, Google's free toolbar for Explorer phones home with every page you surf, and yes, it reads your cookie too. Their privacy policy confesses this, but that's only because Alexa lost a class-action lawsuit when their toolbar did the same thing, and their privacy policy failed to explain this. Worse yet, Google's toolbar updates to new versions quietly, and without asking. This means that if you have the toolbar installed, Google essentially has complete access to your hard disk every time you connect to Google (which is many times a day). Most software vendors, and even Microsoft, ask if you'd like an updated version. But not Google. Any software that updates automatically presents a massive security risk.

51. *cringes* just go to the site instead.
Those bars not only take up valuable monitor space but they can also cause all kinds of problems... plus you have to surf the web with Virus Explorer for the most part.
We have to keep uninstalling the Google bar from people's pc's here at work cause it causes applications to crash or not work.
