GM's US sales fall 14 percent in March

CHICAGO (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) on Monday said U.S. sales fell 14 percent to 365,375 vehicles in March compared with a year earlier.

Car sales were down 22 percent, while truck sales fell 9 percent, the automaker said.

The world's largest automaker's results included its Saab brand and some medium and heavy-duty trucks.

And the cars they're building are pretty good, I hear. I have a few friends with 2003-2006 models that haven't had any problems whatsoever. They said they would definitely buy another GM product.

Long ago, I would have thought that domestic automakers would have learned from the oil shocks of the seventies and started building fuel efficient, technologically innovative vehicles. Instead, throughout the eighties, ninties and into the twenty first century, they have continued to produce over powered, gas guzzling behemoths that harken back to the fifties. The only thing that has changed is that they have computerized the vehicle, but that's it.

I think Mike Moore was onto something as he sought to interview Roger Smith. GM has been self-destructing for decades now, and taking the state of Michigan and the US along with it. And the Board lets it happen.

I have a lovely mid-sized Saturn sedan made in Delaware. I'd cheerfully buy another one, but I can't, because now they only make sporty little cars and big SUVs and minivans. Oh well. Next time I'll shop for a Toyota made in the US.
