A co-worker was murdered yesterday
I saw the story on the news yesterday morning that someone had been robbed and murdered at a Roseville, CA gas station. The person was on their way to church and stopped to get gas. A case of bad timing. They immediately caught the guy and it sounds like he was drugged up or something. I didn't give it much thought beyond what a waste of an innocent life it was except that I've driven by that station many, many times. I received a call from my boss later in the afternoon and he told me that the person murdered was Tammy Texiera from our (CA Dept. of Insurance) Information Technology Division. I was stunned!

She was the IT trouble shooter who had come to my assistance on many occasions and was one of the first people a new employee would meet on their first day on the job when she'd set up their IT accounts. Tammy was such a beautiful and nice person and very skilled at what she did.

We inhabit five of the 18 floors of this building and it's a very quiet, somber place right now. Lots of tears, lots of red eyes, lots of saddened people. We're all hurting today. Take good care of her God.

9. How very sad, and I know what you mean about the IT person
when I started work for an IT company doing accounting work, being an IT idiot I was visited MANY times by the person who set me up originally. They were almost to a person VERY friendly and often quite funny people.

What a loss..

16. It hurts
First, please let me say how sorry I am for you and your office. And the young lady's family. I understand a bit how you feel. About 12 years ago a young attorney in the office I worked in at the time was shot and killed and his girlfriend badly injured by carjackers. The worst part was that the whole incident was observed by a young policewoman on undercover stakeout duty. She immediately called the incident in, but Dan was shot before police arrived (and they arrived very quickly because of the stakeout - as an aside, the young policewoman was badly shaken and had to take a leave of absence from the force for a while to get it together, she blamed herself for not acting quickly enough, although repeated reconstructions of the crime showed she acted above and beyond anything that could have been expected). He had jumped out of the car and was running back to the restaurant they had exited to get help. The robbers then pushed his girlfriend out of the car and shot her as she lay on the parking lot asphalt. I had spoken to Dan around 8 pm that evening, shortly before leaving the office myself. He had just finished signing a project and was looking forward to going out to dinner with his girlfriend. Later that evening I was watching the 11 pm news and the incident was reported but with no names. I didn't know that it had been Dan until I got into work the next morning. Like your office, ours was stunned and deeply saddened. Things will get better, I promise. One piece of advice if you don't mind. If and when there is a memorial service, do go. It is comforting to the family and it will help you and your colleagues in the grieving process.

17. Thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words
It helps because it's been an overall shitty day. Late this morning we learned that Commissioner Garamendi was having a mitral valve procedure today after he felt some discomfort while herding cattle and mending fences on his ranch Saturday (he's a real rancher, not a poser). He should be fine and dandy, but just what we needed today was one more thing to think about. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Is it beer thirty yet?

and the tragedy and senselessness is hard to deal with. I worked with a brilliant young man named Anthony Battaglia- although he held a high position in the company (Director of the Engineering Department), he was so down-to-earth and had a smile for everyone. He spoke to me a lot about his family, and how he missed his little daughter and she was the greatest thing in his life, and he couldn't wait every day to get home and see her. He was so proud of his kid and so nice and so smart and successful. My friends told me this happened on the day of my daughter's First birthday party (he was murdered 2 days earlier- I no longer worked at that firm) and I couldn't think about anything else the rest of the day even though I was hosting a big party, and went into a deep depression after, which lasted a while. It changed me as well- I am much more security conscious, and probably a bit paranoid.

i am really sorry. I can understand how you feel.
