DailyKos - Jeb Bush: Mexican Flag waiver
What a great find.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/4/3/16530/04000

Jeb's 2002 Commercial: http://images.dailykos.com/images/admin/Jeb_Bush_Banderas.mpg

Pop quiz. Where did video of this waving Mexican flag come from?

Answer?

Jeb Bush reelection commercial, circa 2002 (click on link to view commercial).

Unlike the xenophobes that dominate the Republican Party, Jeb understood the importance of our nation's immigrants. On the ad, a succession of Latin American flags wave -- Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Colombian, Dominican, Venezuelan, and NIcaraguan, before concluding with a flag of the state of Florida.

Meanwhile, the narration, all in Spanish (and translated here):

NARRATOR:
It doesn't matter where we come from
Or why we come
We have found opportunity in this land
A better education for our children
The health care our families deserve
A state that has opened up its heart
And has told us, "This is our home"

JEB BUSH, (speaking to the camera in perfect Spanish):
We all want a better life
Together, we're making this all possible in this land
Our house (Nuestra casa)
Florida
Our home (Nuestro hogar)

Not just a great ad, but a great homage to the immigrant culture. We can love this nation yet still love and honor the nations we came from. What else is St. Patrick's Day parade? How many Greek flags fly in Chicago's Greek Town? How many Italian flags in Boston's North End?

Not all Republicans are xenophobic haters. Many of them could learn a thing or two from Jeb Bush.

2. "The health care our families deserve"
Many of us down here are still waiting.

I can't stand the guy, but he is down with the Hispanic culture. Nobody can ever accuse him of being anti-immigrant.

3. What about the Olympics?
Lotsa non-American flags there - ban them!

The United Nations? Ban it!

American citizens playing for other countries? Traitors!

Until they speak out against St. Paddy's day, it can't be taken as anything but racism.

Jeb is married to a Latina right? Interestingly, he even looks like he has Latino/Hispanic blood running through his veins.. hmm..

This is an interesting and stark conflict within Conservative Racists circles.. hmm... a huge cultural difference with the rest of the Southern Man mentality... It's part of why dubya was able to garner a significant segement of the Latina/o vote.

RNC Melhman has been working over time bringing in Native American and African American voters into their party..

Dubya is personally clearly not a racist, despite the fact that a substantial segment of his party is. (former dixie-crats) ..

I hope Dems strategists aren't working on attracting around the disaffected Dixie Crat's - i know they've been working very hard to bring in disaffected Conservative Republicans - i sure the hell hope it ain't them.

9. No, I'll give him credit for that
Corporate facist, yes. Racist, no. He's got Hispanic nieces & nephews; it's hard for him to see Hispanics as "the enemy".

15. He's married to a Mexican woman
At least two of his kids look very Mexican. He speaks very good Spanish and doesn't hesitate to use it, which is why a lot of Hispanics like him down here. He speaks better Spanish than his brother does English.

11. There's NOTHING wrong with it
It's just showing the idiocy all the nutty anti-Immigrant types were are frothing at the mouth over Mexican flags be waved while ignoring Irish, Israeli, etc flags be waved for whatever reason.

13. You're right,
it does show how nutty the whole flag-waving contraversy is. Sorry, my post wasn't directed at you, really. But I think some posters may be missing the point when they recommend sending it to Dobbs, etc. Like Jeb Bush waving the Mexican flag is something we can "get" him on.

He may have said nuestra casa but but I doubt that Jeb was talking about the master bedroom. I suspect that he was referring to the lawn, the kitchen and the nursery.

16. Only a few hundred
Even though more than 50 percent of Miami-Dade County is foreign born, mostly from Latin America, it really isn't a big issue down here because there just isn't that much anti-immigrant sentinment down here as there are in other cities.

Anybody who was anti-immigrant moved out of Miami years ago. It's basically a city that has been overtaken politically by immigrants.

19. Miami is blue
Voted for Kerry, voted for Gore and voted for Clinton. The problem is that they don't keep up with national politics as much as they should. They're more concerned what happens in their respective countries.

And RW or not, you won't find any Latino immmigrant who will support an anti-immigrantion bill.

Striking UM janitors invisible no longer
BY ANA MENENDEZ
amenendez@herald.com

For years, the janitors at the University of Miami kept their troubles to themselves. They came in the middle of the night when the lights were off and worked while everyone else slept. Invisibility became a way of life.

And then, a month ago, some of them decided to go on strike. For the first time in their lives, they gave vent to their grievances in broad daylight. Three weeks of agitation accomplished what months of quiet begging could not, and finally in mid-March, UM President Donna Shalala announced new wage increases and health benefits.

And yet, Tuesday brought new escalation: Workers and their supporters briefly shut down U.S. 1 during the lunch hour, and students, faculty and clergy boldly occupied part of the Ashe administration building in the afternoon.

''The workers are the heroes; they are the people who have stepped forward and risked so much,'' student Jacob Coker-Dukowitz said, speaking from inside the Ashe. ``In solidarity we're taking the plunge with them.''

Edit: spelling error

21. I've been photographing that for the last month
Here are just a few samples, leading up to Tuesday's episode when the clergy members got arrested for blocking traffic on US 1 and students staged a sit-in in the UM admissions office.

24. You really need to correct that title.
Waiver is the intentional relinquishment of a right, claim or privilege.
