Lou Dobbs sucks
I really don't understand why people at DU like him. He is a fear-mongerer and an outrage-fanner. He appeals to American nativism and xenophobia. On Lou's program today

--those evil illegal immigrants waving the Mexican flag.

--those evil illegal immigrants influencing the shaping of congressional districts

--those good citizen Minutemen doing good work to protect our border security

--we don't have any border security

--and just for good measure, the threat from Hugo Chavez

Just a typical Dobbs program. If you think Dobbs is pro-worker, ask yourself when was the last time he covered a labor issue that didn't have something to do with nationalism.

76. The enemy of our enemy is NOT our friend....
just because he gives us red meat bashing of dubya, does not mean we should be praising him.

he's a hard right wing, racist, xenophobe that's a fact.

and he didn't give a shit about the working people until recently - and only from the point of view of the "middle class" as he defines it.

It's Labor and the WORKING CLASS that needs support, and that means covering Labor issues and Union NEWS!

95. So, his bashing corporacrats and advocacy for the middle class,...
,...have completely missed your eyes and ears? Labor and the working class ARE the middle class. He's covered the abuses of corporacrats (exploiting the illegal immigrants, outsourcing jobs, failure to actually invest in securing our country, allowing a foreign nation to "guard" our ports, etc. etc. etc.).

I believe he is more akin to a libertarian sticking with Americanism than he is anywhere near a "hard right wing, racist, xenophobe". I just don't see that especially having known a few "hard right wing, racist, xenophobe" types.

he said bad things about Dubya. He was mean to a Republican on TV. He's my new hero! He ROCKS!

Btw wanna see my shrine to Pat Buchanan? Now that guy really ROCKS!:sarcasm:

You raise an important point. Although it's important to note that politics can make for some strange bedfellows sometimes. If we agree on some issues for different reasons, that's fine as long as we're not under any illusions about the very different ways we come to the same conclusions and who ultimately does and who does not, in fact, really rock.

Lou Dobbs doesn't give two fucks about being equitable to anyone other than his angry nativist white guy middle class constituency. He's the kind of guy who would have voted for the Know Nothing Party in the 1850's. If angry white American guys and CEO's cut a deal tomorrow protecting the interests of both at the expense of everyone else, Lou would be fellating CEO's on his show.

114. I must disagree
I understand what you're saying but we have to look at these things in terms of broader coalitions.

It's painful to admit, but many of the progressive changes we all support had their roots in movements and people who we might find repugnant today.

Lou Dobbs has been saber rattling against Hugo Chavez with his anti-communist rhetoric and hate speech for years .. he thinks it's perfectly ok for the United States to be interfering with their elections, regime change, coup de'tats and even ok for us to take over their oil - that's Lou Dobbs' position a few months ago.

it's in complete contrast to his position in Iraq - Lou Dobbs can't figure out his own thoroughly bankrupt/double standard policies on a lot of issues, except when it comes to our own Supremacy in this hemisphere.

I think Lou Dobbs thinks, that with the exception of Canada (maybe) the United States should control every other country in this hemisphere.

It's okay with Dobbs that we have naval war ships off the coast of Venezuela with missils taunting and provoking Chavez.

what the fuck is that for? so that we can arrange for another coup de'tat and take over their oil wells.

I'm sorry, but people better wake up - and take Dobbs with a grain of salt on a lot of these matters... and when he's playing to the devil in you instead of your better angels, then you really should be aware all the more.

Texas leader of Minuteman group resigns
Associated Press

VICTORIA — The Texas leader of the Minuteman volunteer border patrol group has resigned, saying the chapter lacks structure and claiming racist tendencies among members from his area, a newspaper reported.

Bill Parmley, a Goliad County landowner who heads the Texas chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, resigned by e-mail Monday in a letter to Chris Simcox, the group's national president, and Goliad County Sheriff Robert DeLaGarza, the Victoria Advocate reported in today's editions.

The Minuteman group drew national attention earlier this year for its volunteer patrols of the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. It is planning similar patrols in Texas this fall, and Simcox said the resignation would not change those plans.

Parmley, who lives in the tiny Goliad County town of Sarco, accused members of working to undermine DeLaGarza because he is Hispanic. He also said the group was holding secret meetings without him in violation of the bylaws.

You don't think the Border Patrol is trying? They're completely underfunded & understaffed. Instead of arming your local right-wing wackos, why don't we simply hire more Border Patrol agents? Why don't we create legal pathways to immigration? Or punish corporations that exploit workers?

about strengthening unions & increasing the minimum wage. After the Sago mining disaster, he was just brutal to the mine owners & pointed out how the mine had awful safety standards & had driven out the unions. He's always talking about the exhorbitant corporate profits... No, wait, he hasn't done any of those things. He talks about "Broken Borders" every night instead. People who think Dobbs cares about the working class need to take a look at what his broadcasts are about. If it's not about foreigners, Dobbs doesn't care.

Thats where yer PC crap went bottoms up. Its too easy to say racist instead of figuring out a problem on its own merits. If you think his attacks on illegals are an attack on Mexicans then youre wrong. Its an attack on illegals wherever they came from. Right now its just that 8 of ten illegals just happen to be coming from that country. Nothing personal or racist about it.

He just wishes that corporations would keep their $6/hr, no health insurance call-center jobs in America where they will be held by White U.S. citizens.

You never hear him complaining about the low wages or absence of health care. The OP nailed it on the head: Dobbs' concern for labor issues is rooted solely in nationalism. Corporations that don't exploit foreign labor, but only exploit domestic labor don't draw his ire.

he's blathering on about immigration. I've yet to hear him once say anything about health care and I can't recall anybody at DU starting a thread saying "look at what Dobbs said about health care." It's all immigration, immigration, and more immigration. Maybe if one were to watch every minute of every show over the past year, one could find a couple of instances of him talking about health care. But if we really gave a shit, one wouldn't have to do this, because he'd be talking about that on a daily basis and not immigration.

120. He has complete control over his show
When CNN gave Lou Dobbs his own show, he made sure to use his power & influence w/the network in order to obtain almost complete control over the topics & issues he could cover. Think of that. The man can cover anything in the world - the Patriot Act, the Downing Street Memo, Iraq war profiteering & corruption, union-busting, anti-environment bills, global warming, PNAC, the neocons, Bush-Saudi ties, election fraud, etc., etc. Instead, he uses that control to cover immigration. Every night. For years.

and lower class, I'm glad to have a voice speaking about OUR rights - or lack thereof, and furthermore, You want to reap the benefits of the U.S.?. have the decency to wave the American Flag, considering that is the country that has been a better alternative for you to live in then Mexico. They want to stay here, then at least acknowledge the flag of the U.S. who apparently is a better place to be then is Mexico. Obviously protesting on the streets of the U.S. must mean that protesting against inhumane treatment and lack of opportunity in Mexzico would be meaningless, so why wave the Mexocan flag?????

36. Dobbs' rise is a result of ignornance and xenophobia in America
He is first and foremost a corporatist hack, caring only about big business (see his past), though masquerading as a friend of the middle class. Secondly, he is a teevee pundit, carving out a niche for himself through ignorance, xenophobia, patriotism and nationalism (read: targeting the ignorant), all in order to expand his target market. (hence, a larger piece of the advertising revenue pie). Saying Dobbs cares about middle class Americans is like believing Bush when he says Jesus is his favorite philosopher. Dobbs is an opportunist, using the fear, hatred and xenophobia of his viewers to gain popularity where little existed before. It is called reinventing himself for profit motives and for ego. Look at and study his past and then say he cares about "middle class americans". Follow the money...... Typical pundit using the ignorance of his viewers to self-aggrandize his self worth. To see that so many DUers listen to his every word is very, very disconcerting to say the least. More and more this site is losing its progressive principles.

125. I've followed Lou Dobbs for over six years, and I disagree.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 02:58 PM by Kurovski
I don't agree with everything the man says, but you are spouting utter nonsense. No, make that bullshit.

Dobbs has decried the outsourcing of America's jobs for many years. that's something even Bill Clinton didn't do. He challenged the Government DAILY regarding Enron and corporate corruption. He is in support of small business as well, and highlighted companies that well supported their employees.

You are posting bullshit on those counts.

It could be that you are against all business, in which case none of that will matter to you.

The fact that you cut and paste the same speech in every thread about Dobbs is not only somewhat rude and lazy, it looks to be a campaign. Now that Dobbs is tearing the administration to shreds in no uncertain terms, dishonest attacks on Dobbs seem counter-productive. You may see him as racist, many do, but you're definitely wrong on the other counts. I'm personally not fully convinced of the charges of racism lobbed at Dobbs.

And what a lame, right-wing styled attempt it is to repeatedly refer to anyone who would listen to Dobbs as "ignorant". Maybe that will intimidate folks who don't think for themselves, or look for themselves, or who choose to react on assumptions, but it is insulting to anyone else.

Dobbs' daily polls consistently reveal that his audience knows what's up with the Bush administration. It ranks in the 80-97 range on those who agree that Bush is headed on a tragic course, that his policies are damaging, that he is a failure, that he is full of nonsense.

You have come here to DU with a day and a few posts under your belt, and chose to suddenly jump into the fray of some of the most divisive discussions on this board since the elections. and you come on board to attack a man who consistently challenges Bush, and whose attacks on the administration have been recently stepped up. You then state "More and more this site is losing its progressive principles." Again I say, "nice try". many here disagree with Dobbs, but I will tell you one thing: in this day and age their is no principle more progressive than telling the truth about this administration.

I don't give a rat's ass if it's Ann Coulter who suddenly sees the light and starts spilling the beans. The truth is the truth.

And without people who have a podium and an audience telling the truth day in and day out, the progressive movement in this country is fucked, So are all movements save for our one long slide into Fascism.

135. But of course you disagree with me...
Because if you agreed, and since you watch his show, that would make you, according to my statement, ignorant. I don't blame you for posting, you are simply defending who you are and what you watch, but I stand behind my statement...He has appeal, shall I say, among the less enlightened among us. It's pretty obvious if you really care to look. Follow the advertising money...Follow Lou bending over to CEOs. Follow Moneyline and his past. He creates rage and anger in those that fear what they do not know. He manipulates video, stats and opinion to reach his pre drawn conclusions, enraging you even more, hooking you to his show because he talks what you want to hear, thereby creating a niche for himself as an immigrant basher, friend of the middle class. Nothing but bullshit, though he is laughing all the way to the bank. The formula is quite successful. If you so happen to like him and watch him well what can I say....

136. Do enlightened individuals, such as yourself,
always use the same manipulative techniques that they accuse others of, or are you an anomaly?

For you see, I'm an ignorant individual, and I wouldn't know.

Do all enlightened individuals suddenly gain that extra-sensory perception which allows them to tell others definitively what they are and what they're feeling, be it Lou Dobbs, or an anonymous poster on a forum?

Since I'm so easily manipulated by the nefarious Lou, perhaps you can manipulate me into your brand of enlightenment.

You write: "It's pretty obvious if you really care to look."
What is? Tell us. Give us some facts. Make some sense. I'm not the only one who will be waiting for a clear and cogent response to weigh against my own observations. Tossing turds directly into my face isn't going to sway me.

I'll reiterate my contention that some of your techniques Vis-à-Vis defining others based on little more than your own goals and desires, and frequent use of manipulative assumptions via insult, are the golden rules of the Right-Wing playbook.

But perhaps it is after all just an extremists' way of attempting to get their way.

Dobbs covers the truth on many topics, and to say that he does not is unadulterated bullshit. Maybe you hate him because you think that he himself is filled with hate. That is your opinion and your choice. Truth. Opinion. Truth. Opinion.

38. Like Him Or Not... He Has Gotten The Repukes Tied
in knots on immigration! And The Idiot isn't too happy with him either!

The only problem I'm having with the immigration issue for the most part is the fact that the protesters have started using ONLY the Mexican Flag! This isn't going to sit well with Americans!

If they want to march & protest it would look a lot better to use the American Flag in America! For those that are opposed to more immigration it only fans the flame!

Lou Dobbs doesn't bother me so much, if you remember HE was one who had the Dubai Ports issue front & center when it was almost a done deal! I don't doubt that this WH is still doing their dirty work, but you can't say Dobbs backs down when he hones in on something. I think he cared about the middle class and he HAS taken a lot of flack because of his opinions.

I just wish those of us who oppose this administration could get as organized as these people marching for what they believe in. They are getting a LOT of attention, while we sit here at our PC's, or sign petitions or write Congressmen! We ain't got "nuttin" yet!

Problem I have with their protests is that they are here ILLEGALLY!!!

That's what Lou Dobbs harps on. He has nothing against LEGAL immigration and neither do I. To give these 10-20 million ILLEGALS Amenesty for crossing the desert is a disgrace.

Why should we pay for a Mexicans education, healthcare, etc.... when I've been an American my whole life and don't get it? Give it to me as an American citizen, then maybe I'll agree and be happy to hand it out to the foreigners.
Until then, they should go back to Mexico or whatever country they ILLEGALLY entered from and protest there for what they want from their corrupt and ineffective governments.

Not the sort of reporting many of us appreciate.

If it's a personal opinion, fine, we are all entitled to that. But inferring someone said something they did not... hmmm.

I have heard him come down hard and often on illegal EMPLOYERS and voice the opinion that things should be done legally. He is know to make a lot of anti-globalist comments and arguments against corporations which benefit from our nation and then put greed over any sense of loyalty to American workers. I have never heard him voice racist remarks.

53. reflecting common ground for the People on both left and right
the worm is turning with gathering speed, the Repubitards may have wound up the immigration issue to stave this off, but where they have their noses buried is visible to more and more people on all sides of the spectrum, so that there is a coming together taking place of those on both left and right who prioritize the public interest over advancing the particular ideology they have bought stock in. Dobbs may be a corporate hack, or not too far out of his repubican armchair, but in kicking the administration's ass nightly over selling America's economic future to the lowest overseas bidder in favor of its transnational corporate chickenfuck chums, he is doing yeoman's service to the People's cause. And that after all, is what it's all about.

Social structures, business and government all exist solely to serve the People. Not the other way around.

He doesn't get at the whole story and he spends far too much time fear mongering then he does in getting to the actual issues that cause the disparity - he doesn't dive into it - he just fans the flames .

that's not what we need. What we need is comprehensive reporting on an honest level not on a race baiting level. Because when he and his producers do this, he is only appealing to the base level of racism. it's really disgusting and he needs to be de-programmed of his racism before he can possibly get at the issues in any meaningful level.

Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 07:29 PM by NNN0LHI
With the election coming up this gives them an issue for the Republicans to manipulate to their advantage.

For the Republicans in states where racism sells well Lou gives them the perfect venue to spout their anti brown people rhetoric to whip up their constituents into a frenzy.

For the Republicans in states where racism is not so popular this gives those Republicans their venue to look reasonable to their constituents on this issue.

This is a no lose for the GOP. These Republican politicians would much rather be talking about scary looking brown people with Tuberculosis than dead American soldiers coming home from Iraq every day with the mid-term elections looming. Believe me.

Bush doesn't even come into play in this drama. He isn't running for anything.

And if it wasn't Mexicans it would be some other group. Blacks? The disabled? Gays? The homeless? Jews? Muslims? Who will be next? The Republicans don't care. They are thugs.

101. Imagine this...
Imagine if you have a co-worker who seems obsessed w/one issue. Every time you talk to him, like "how are you?", he sees it as an opportunity to bring up his favorite issue - minorities. He follows every aspect of the issue on the news. He'll always try to email you any article that places this group in a bad light - with "YOU SEE???" in the subject line. People will avert speaking to him at get-togethers for fear he will launch into a rant. He has his own website where he fiercely complies any negative article w/his own commentary about how AWFUL those minorities are. He never says he's racist, but everyone at work thinks he is based on his behavior & obsession w/the issue. Now imagine he has his own TV show. That's Dobbs.

And unless he's given you EVIDENCE that he's a racist it's just accusation.

I'm not into mind reading or faith based attacks - that's for Republicans.

119. If you don't see it, I can't show it to you
There's a "failure to communicate" here of the most basic level. Dobbs fans wonder why anyone could think he's racist, & Dobbs haters wonder how anyone could miss the obvious racism & xenophobia. As a Dobbs hater, I'm perplexed by his liberal fan base & troubled by his continuing alarmism on immigration. But I don't think either side will ever convince the other,

121. If there is real evidence it should be easy to demonstrate.
It sounsd more like you believe he means something other than what he says. No wonder you can't show it.

For all I know he may be a racist. He may not be. I'm not prepared to decide he is just because some people FEEL he is.

I hate the use of the word "racism" on this site. It is thrown out their way too much in cases that are clearly not racism.

easy to predict, if you see or hear about a something involving non-WASPS just wait for his show and he'll come out opposed to whatever it is they are doing. (in the name of the middle class of course)

Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 07:02 PM by Cleita
in a rational manner that is acceptable to all sides involved in this, the employer, the American worker and the immigrant worker.

I think Randi is right. This is this election year's divisive issue. After the election it will disappear into thin air. Business will go on as usual.

Is he ranting about the flags again? I'm so glad I stopped watching CNN - that show isn't good for my blood pressure. But you can almost tell what Dobbs is ranting about today based on the threads that later show up on DU.

you know, small government and hate the communist?
yeah, that kind of conservative.
the real ones, not these neo-cons in charge. thats why lou doesnt like chimpy.

i really dunno why his stance would suggest hes a racist and has some affiliation with the KKK tho.

people around here like him because he hates chimpy too
and occasionally he does take some center and slightly left stances when it comes to social and economic issues.

As far as illegals go Im not concerned with their problems. I think we should take care of our own , and let Mexico take care of Mexicans.

110. Dobbs is good. We need allies on the issues that transcend labels.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 09:49 AM by Armstead
The core issue of "free reade" globalization and corporate abuse of power, and what those values are doing to America is one that transcends the usual labels of right and left. What is needed to break through to the mainsteram with those issues is a coalition that can at least agrees on what is actually non-political common sense and common decency.

Dobbs can be annoying, and some of his issues are what could be called "politically incorrect" by the left. But Dobbs is also an important ally on core issues like globaliztion, corporate power and the gutting of the middle class and the screwing of American workers.

Anyone like Dobbs who spaeksa out against that is important. We can argue about social policies and political correctness later. But first we have to save America.

While protecting America's domestic economy can veer into xenophobia, that does not negate the fact that America IS being dismantled by Corporate Elites. The working/middle class has been placed on the auction block.

Frankly, people like Dobbs and Pat Buchanan are much more on target on those issues than mushy centrist Dewmocrats like Hillary Clinton and the otherso=-called liberals who are enablers of the corporate oligarchy. The Democrats have been AWOL on those core issues for far too long. An too often, the beltway Democrats still ignore it.

It's like Bob Barr. His positions on many issues are diametrically opposed to those of liberals, and during the Clinton impeachment he was one of the most obnoxious Republicans there was. BUT Barr also is a champion of civil liberties and has become an important ally of "the left" in standing up against the assault on civil liberties by the Bush administration.

122. I don't agree with everything Lou Dobbs says...But recently I appreciate
his stand on ILLEGAL immigration, outsourcing, and the ruination of the middle class by Corporations. His disdain for Bush and his lies grows more transparent by the day, and in these times, that's a revolutionary act.
I don't think there's one politician or journalist I agree with 100%, and that's okay in a truly Democratic society.

Next to Blitzer, Zahn, Crowley, Kagan, Soledad, and the rest of the media whores on CNN,
Dobbs stands out.

I mean, it's OK to disagree with someone's positions without calling them names. I don't agree with everything said on DU. For example, there are several pro-offshorers here, all on ignore because I can't take seriously the theory that destroying one middle class to lift another helps more than just the wealthy. Real Americans are being hurt by offshoring, some of whom I know personally and have talked to online, and their situations are nothing to be downplayed because some corporate-fluffing economist trumpets this horrid practice as beneficial to workers.

For instance, I kind of shy away from his nativism; but as someone whose career path has been decimated by job offshoring, I can appreciate it when he calls pro-corporate tards like Heritage fellow and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao and pro-offshorer Nutscrape guru Marc Andreessen on their ridiculous and unapologetic anti-labor stances. I can also get behind him with his arguments about how offshoring has NOT created better jobs for Americans as Repukes continue to assert, that the "retraining" canard in regard to displaced workers is an unrealistic cop-out, that our corporate leaders are doing absolutely nothing to address either of these issues and that our trade deficit is skyrocketing.

152. I LOVE HIM!
And I agree with him. Sorry folks, but I was OFFENDED by all of the Mexican Flags flying.

This AIN'T Mexico.

If these people want to stay here, they should have been flying American Flags. They are getting fed and
clothed by the USA. They pay no taxes (despite what you may have heard, they don't) yet the vast majority of them
have better healthcare coverage than US citizens courtesy of
the taxpayers. Look at the thousands of kids that are in the public schools. Yet their parents pay not a single
cent of school taxes.

To me, they looked as if they were saying "we're from Mexico and we're taking over--get used to it." All those
Mexican flags were very insulting. It was very offensive to see their declaration of such allegiance to Mexico, when they
want to stay here.
