Poll question: NYC *April 29* Will you be going?

Dear DUers ! There's still plenty of time to grab a buddy and come to NYC, as nothing says Spring in the Big Apple like:

As you may know, a March for Peace, Justice and Democracy has been called for April 29th in New York City. I just signed up for email updates about the march, so that I can be sure to receive all of the latest details about the plans for the event, and to find out ways that I can participate in making this important demonstration a great success. You can sign up for updates here: http://www.april29.org/april29email.

Here's the call to action:

A war based on lies

Spying, corruption and attacks on civil liberties
Katrina survivors abandoned by government

MARCH FOR PEACE,
JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY

End the war in Iraq -
Bring all our troops home now!

SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 2006
NEW YORK CITY

Unite for change - let's turn our country around!

The times are urgent and we must act.

Too much is too wrong in this country. We have a foreign policy that is foreign to our core values, and domestic policies wreaking havoc at home. It's time for a change.

* No more never-ending oil wars!
* Protect our civil liberties & immigrant rights. End illegal spying, government corruption and the subversion of our democracy.
* Rebuild our communities, starting with the Gulf Coast. Stop corporate subsidies and tax cuts for the wealthy while ignoring our basic needs.
* Act quickly to address the climate crisis and the accelerating destruction of our environment.

Our message to the White House and to Congress is clear: Either stand with us or stand aside!

We are coming together to march, to vote, to speak out and to turn our country around!

Join us in New York City on Saturday, April 29th!

More discussions in the NY Forum.....but thought I'd start a simple little headcount action here:

Are you planning on being in NYC for some Marching for Peace, DU Love, Justice and Democracy? :patriot:

10. We are flying back home late Sat
So we aren't booking a hotel. We will only be in town for about 12 hours. So we really want to figure out a way to meet DUers for lunch or dinner or whatever.

12. There will be something Saturday night
so don't worry about that. If it's anything like DC was, the march will be long, long, long. :) They haven't announced the route yet, but I'm sure DUers will have a meeting point in the morning. What time are you getting in? UFPJ is saying get to midtown by 10:30, but if DC is any indication, you'll need to be there earlier than that. :(

I saw a Raw Story blurb earlier, that Bush may be cancelling his Easter *Retreat* Weekend, or something like that.

7. There's a bus leaving from Detroit on the United for Peace site...
and as much as I despise long road trips, that might be kinda fun. (I would just make a long weekend trip via plane out of it, by I refuse to pay $350 a night for a closet-sized, if nicely decorated, NYC boutique hotel room).

18. Try Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz......
Combined with hotel room packages are much cheaper.

I'm taking Amtrak from SE Va. That's even more fun! And you might just avoid hotels altogether :hi:

We've got a room for three of us that isn't bad pricewise, but we booked a while ago. It's probably going to be tough now.

11. Wish I could but it is a bit far from the Left Coast!
Now if you just had a couple of DJ's like the ones that got almost two Million people to swamp LA city hall over Herr SenselessBrener's HR-4437, to rally the citizens you might have a great turnout!

Just one of four streets used to march from East LA to City Hall!

22. They were out numbered by 500:1 I guess!
Try as hard as I could I could not find them in any of the pictures posted on the web that I saw but they were there and did hassle some people after the majority had left! It also helps that the Mayor of Los Angeles, a son of immigrants, Spoke to the crowd in support of them! Both the Mayor and the Chief of police attended the demonstration and voiced opposition to the proposed anti-immigrant law which is to be debated in the Senate
Yur welcome to look and see if you can find them http://la.indymedia.org/

Really beautiful alternative that you can "plant" in your yard after the march. For crafty DUers, simple instructions and photos here...

26. What a great idea and much more original than
mine! First a little background:

I was going to try for a "DU Spirit" theme, since many DUers can't be there, and my inspiration is our DUer The Witch, who made sure everyone who wanted to be there, "Marched" in the DC Peace March last Sept. And it was fabulous, I helped her carry it, and I'm sure the photo's archived on DU (sorry, I can't find it now, but I know I saw it!!) But our arms sure got tired, whew.

OK, here's my thought, I'm going to order a DU tee xxx-large (if available :)and "sharpie" all the DUers names that want to be in NYC on April 29th on the shirt. I can print small, no problem, I'm still thinking this in my head, but I definitely want "DU Username - State" Better yet,in the spirit of 2006 maybe Congressional District ?

For instance, mine would be Catchawave-VA02. Kewl,eh? And much easier than carrying a 2x4 sign over my head for a few miles. I'd also be willing to raffle it off for a future (admin approved)DU fundraiser :hi:

39. Bump for the 4-5-6 !
Just realized this is April 5, 2006, so 04-05-06 won't happen for another hundred years!

Also, by far, seems the best travel deals are on www.expedia.com right now for flight/hotel packages.

Air Tran takes you to LaGuardia for less than a bus too. I guess depending on your origination.

Hope this helps !
