80. I was reading some of the replies last night over at FR, and there are a
couple of them that are convinced that the "real reason" bug man is stepping down is to run for president in 2008.. I shit you not.. There were at least 2 of them if not more.. I only read the first 225 replies so maybe there was more, but there were at least 2 of them that thought that, and the sad part is, I really think they believed it..

Upon removal of the Frat Boy and the Cave Man from office, she becomes president and gets to pick her own Veep.

Any suggestions? Conyers is nearly eighty, so he would not be a good choice. How about Kweisi Mfume? Or if you really want to frost the racist/sexist crowd, how about Sheila Jackson-Lee? I would suggest Maxine Waters, but there is a provision in the Constitution that the President and Vice President cannot reside in the same state; both Pelosi and Waters are Californians.

Delay caught in something illegal, unsavoury, sexwise, and on tape.

Nah. DeLay's a good guy. If he thought he was dragging down the Republican party, he'd be the kind of person to sacrifice himself.

This ought to take the wind out of Ronnie Earle's sails. Think ole Ron's gonna want to pursue a congressman who's on his way out the door?

I'll bet he drops his suit before the end of the summer.

Too funny.....

-------------

eLay told Matthews that the polls have been consistently against him, and that he decided to withdraw now to give another Republican a chance to run.

No wonder! Every time any local or national news media reported last week's Jack Abramoff indictments and upcoming testimony, the news commie-critters continued to mention his "connection" with Tom DeLay, implying he was a dirty pol. Never mind that Jack Abramoff himself announced he had nothing illegal or negative to report about Tom DeLay.

BUT THE COMMIE NEWS MEDIA REFUSED TO REPORT THAT STORY!!!!!

Tom's had a bullseye on his forehead for a very long time. Too bad he got arrogant enough to take a trip to Scotland.

To: Petronski

Unfortunately, this has to be the reason. The best scenario is that Delay feels that his former aide would taint his reelection chances too much.

Clearly Ronnie Earle and his ilk win. The politics of smear and the politization of the judicial process win.

It couldn't possibly be because DeLay is a friggen' crook, could it?

Washington Post has it now.

It certainly does.

I don't understand this. DeLay was in good position to win re-election and win the court persecution from Ronnie Earle.

Something must have broken loose for this result, and if so, this is very bad news for our side.

Obviously we need lots more details before forming any kind of reasoned conclusion, but this was unexpected. More bad news has to be around the corner which caused this.

Gawd, these people really are cueless with the reality of their Party. I guess when your news is Fox, Rush, NewsMax, and Fox, you might not be getting the whole picture.

I could go on, but what's the point? They'll be the last ones to know that their entire Party is corrupt to the core.

Let us all wait for verification on this one.

What strikes me as odd is why would Delay contact Chris Matthews to break this.

I think I will wait and see how this plays out.

"Resigning now would make no sense at all."

The way he's been talking lately, DeLay appears to have had some sort of religious experience or further conversion.

Seriously. He's been much more open about speaking of his relationship with God, and he might have decided he's going to spend the rest of his life working for foster care, and for his Christian values.

He could step into a pulpit as a preacher, after the way he spoke at the Christian gathering last Wednesday.

Omg, have they really not been following the Abramoff affairs?? It's incredible that they arae so stunned by this. As soon as Abramoff was sentenced, Delay's aide was indicted and then another one, once those two start talking, Tom Delay is finished.

They think it's only because of the Scotland trip??

It took a long time, but it was never going to be the Ronnie Earle indictment that would get Tom Delay. Abramoff warned him months ago when he said that Tom Delay was a liar, that he 'knew what was going on, they all knew'!!

Freepers are so dumb that's why they're always in a state of shock and awe!

I think there's going to be some indictments and Tom got a letter from the prosecutor so the Repubs finally asked him to step down!! What great news! Finally we are going to be rid of the bugman!

Actually, Jesus' servant would manipulate arcane Texas election law while at the same time discarding those "good Republicans" who dared stand before the voters of the 22nd District and challenge him in the primary less than 30 days ago, thus anointing -- in typically heavy-handed fashion -- his successor.

And then transition seamlessly into a lucrative career lobbying Congress on behalf of various corporate and Christian causes, losing none of his influence while quintupling his income.

Praise God.

59. BWHAHAHAHAHA! This one's got it figured out:
The Dems found a new way of getting rid of Republicans. They can't win elections fairly, so they use tumped-up charges, and they pound on it, until the object of their attack gives up. Republicans should support their own -- remember when the Dem conned the Republicans into getting rid of Newt, then Trent Lott, now DeLay -- they are finding it that it keeps working.

Republicans need to fight back, or they will keep picking off each effective Republican one by one.

Stop "tumping" up all those criminal charges! It's not fair, because they really are guilty!

95. It seems that loser hangs around with this gun-nut loser:
The thing that pisses me off most is that the Democrats won. The DA in Travis county completely made up a case against Delay, ran through three grand juries before he found one willing to indict, is looking at the case being completely tossed out and still Delay resigns because of the drumbeat from the dems and the press. And likely because of wussy-ass, shit-coward Republicans that are afraid of being editorialized against in the New York Times.

I don't care what anybody says, Delay was the best Whip that the Republicans have ever had.

93. hey, freepers: Delay ran an insider trading operation out of his office
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 01:44 PM by wordpix
---among other illegalities.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/19/17445/7449

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/3/28/111912/415

The Wall Street Journal has a major story this morning on their front page. It's subscription based so here are excerpts on our legislative effort to curb insider trading in Congress:

snip: Amid broad congressional concern about ethics scandals, some lawmakers are poised to expand the battle for reform: They want to enact legislation that would prohibit members of Congress and their aides from trading stocks based on nonpublic information gathered on Capitol Hill.

Two Democrat lawmakers plan to introduce today a bill that would block trading on such inside information. Current securities law and congressional ethics rules don't prohibit lawmakers or their staff members from buying and selling securities based on information learned in the halls of Congress.

It isn't clear yet what kind of support the bill will garner from Republicans. But its prospects are enhanced by the current charged environment in Congress; lawmakers from both parties in both houses have placed a high priority on passing ethics and lobbying-reform legislation. Such legislation would provide a vehicle to which proponents could attach a measure on stock trades.

In addition to banning trading on inside information, the proposal would require that lawmakers and their top aides disclose within 30 days any stock trades. Congressional rules now require lawmakers to disclose their trades once a year. The bill also would require that companies register with Congress if they sell information about congressional activity to Wall Street investors.

Unlike members of Congress, executive-branch employees already are banned from trading on inside information. Employees of several federal agencies are prohibited from investing in companies that have business before them. In 1934, for example, Congress banned Federal Communications Commission employees from owning stocks or bonds in telecommunications or broadcast companies.

Again just why did we introduce this legislation?:
The two Democrats who wrote the bill say they were motivated by the trading activity of a former top aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, the onetime Republican majority leader in the House. The aide, Tony Rudy, bought and sold hundreds of stocks from his computer in the U.S. Capitol in 1999 and 2000, according to financial-disclosure forms and other DeLay aides.

<...>

It is difficult to tell how much Mr. Rudy profited on particular trades. House financial statements require disclosure of stock trades only in broad ranges. Mr. Rudy bought each of his stocks for between $1,001 and $15,000 and sold them in the same ranges.

But Mr. Rudy's net worth grew from 1999 to 2000. Mr. Rudy and his wife were at least $49,000 in debt at the end of 1999, according to his disclosure form. They owned no more than $1,000 in stock and reported a student-loan debt between $50,001 and $100,000.

At the end of 2000, Mr. Rudy and his wife reported assets between $6,007 and $91,000. Their student-loan debt was between $30,002 and $100,000.
