4. Yes, you are Binka
And having a child of my own, even though I cannot truly imagine what Cindy has been going through, nor can I truly imagine what you have been going through because of what happened to Ben, I know how much it hurts to even think of something happening to my daughter.

I'm glad that in some way, even the smallest of ways, I have helped you through this most difficult of times.

38. Two years Casey has been dead....
Three years we have been in Iraq, with no end in sight.

What a fucking nightmare.

I cannot imagine being a informed member of the US military right now. How do you keep going when you know it's all lies? How do you not just throw down your weapon and refuse to fire another shot in this bullshit excuse for a war? How do you live with the dichotomy of doing what you signed on to do and knowing the "job" as envisioned by Bush & Co. is the wrong job?

And how many more Caseys and Bens and dead Iraqis is it going to take for everyone involved to say "Enough!"

Binka -- how is Ben doing these days? I haven't seen any new reports.

40. Ben Suffered A Big Blow When His Best Buddy Was Killed
The 3/7 was two weeks from coming home when V was killed in an IED attack. Ben went to the funeral and spoke but he only got two sentences into his tribute when he lost it. V's sister came up and helped Ben through. The 3/7 is home now and Ben feels some love from his comrades that made it back. But V's death has been a big blow to him. Thank you for asking. Please keep this thread alive. It is after nine here in Italy and I will be going to bed soon. :loveya:

41. I remember reading about V's death...
I had just forgotten his name. What a damn tragedy.

Man, I am even more thankful Ben is out of the action, but livid that there are other moms and dads out their wondering if it will be their child blown to bits today.

Glad to hear Ben is doing as well as can be expected and that he is finding some comfort in his friends.

I'll help keep this kicked! :loveya:

42. It's a bit of a truism, but most military historians and sociologists
will say that the ordinary enlisted soldier fights ("fire another shot") not for any grand cause, but on behalf of the fellow soldiers in his platoon or squad.

When you add in the brainwashing the enlisted ranks have undergone (70% still think Iraq had something to do with 9/11), I think you have your answer as how they could "fire another shot."

59. One way of reading the Vietnam saga is as a
narrative of progressive disillusionment by soldiers (and citizens) "in the cause," such that drug use and addiction among U.S. troops by 1971-72 was pandemic in Vietnam, as were acts of open insubordination, up to and including "fragging" superiors when they gave bullshit orders.

Remember, however, that our involvement in Vietnam lasted about 20 years (from 1954-74), whereas we are still in our fourth year (or fourteenth year, depending on how you count) in Iraq.
