It's a 4 cylinder, rear wheel drive. Although I could really use a 4WD where I live, it's a great little truck.

4. 2005 Toyota Matrix
I can use it like a truck or a van to haul lumber and appliances, yet it was only $15,500 new and gets good mileage. The small motor is a decent tradeoff.

Wish i could vote twice.
My new(ish) daily driver gets 28. But my old, second car, which I drove for over 10 years, gets 42.

I only got the 28mpg into the poll. :(

20. Where is "here"?
I have a fifty two mile round trip commute, and with gas prices the way they are, I had to do something. The city I commute to has a population of aprox. 100,000, and in the six months that I've been riding, I've had very few problems or scares. This bike has a four speed manual tranny, like a regular bike, thus the pick up from a dead stop is quite quick. In my opinion, it is much safer than a bicycle, and it is much more manuverable than a car.

Yes, if I get hit, I'm going to be looking at a world of hurt. But I'm an excellent driver, both of motorcycles and cars, having only been in two accidents in my life neither of which was my fault.

And once I get outside of the city, all I really have to worry about are deer stepping out in front of me, and that can be a tragedy for anybody in a car also.

Hey, if it's not for you, it's not for you. But for me, it is a fun, economical, viable alternative. I don't have a death wish, just want to save money and leave as little impression on the earth as I can:shrug:

My life isn't worth the savings in gas that a scooter provides.

"But for me, it is a fun, economical, viable alternative."
Fun until that deer steps out in front of you, and don't delude yourself, you will be hurt much worse in a scooter/deer accident than in a car/deer accident. The other thing is scooters seem to be 'invisible' to many people, especially senior citizens.

37. Well then, just keep on sucking the gas down friend
And I'll keep sipping it. I think that you're being a bit over the top in your safety concerns. I fully realize the risks that I'm taking, and given my experience and ability level, I'm comfortable with riding the scooter. I take all applicable safety precautions, wear a helmet, wear a jacket with ballistic nylon protection for the elbows, shoulders and back.

But hey, to each their own. We all have our own comfort limits as to the risks and the amount of risk we take. Apparently, at least in this area, my tolerance is higher than yours:shrug: It's higher than my wife's also, for she won't ride either, though due to an permanent inner ear problem that leads to balance problems, I can see why.

But I've been comfortable on two wheels since I was a kid. Rode bikes, raced bikes, crashed and burned on a bicycle a number of times. All valuable experience, including the crashing and burning part since it taught me how to fall on a two wheeled vehicle. I would ride a bike to work, but the time factor was the deal killer, thus I'm riding my scooter. And believe me, it is a lot easier to dance with traffic on my scooter than on a bike.

And there are other alternatives to two wheels, if that is what you're uncomfortable with. Here is the complete line of Bajaj three wheelers

They carry a bit over a half ton in cargo capacity, get 80mpg, but the only trouble is that they have a top end of only 40mph. Suitable for about town, but a bit slow if you're going out of town.
But then again, hey you could pick up one of the fine European fuel efficient cars, like the Smart Car

Gets 70mpg, goes aprox 70mph. And there loads of European cars that regularly peg over 60mpg.

We each have to start doing something. Continuing to drive huge cars with overpowered engines is what got us into this mess to begin with. Continuing to do so won't get us out. A scooter may not be for you, but there are lots of fuel efficient vehicles out there. So check 'em out, decide what you like, and start saving gas. It is, after all, the only logical thing to do.

By choice, I don't own a car, as I live in an area where I can walk to most everything I want (retail, groceries, restaurants, movie theaters) and can take public transport when I can't walk.

:toast:

I did own a car, a 2003 Honda Civic EX that got excellent mileage (the best available at the time for a non-hybrid.) After 3 years, it had less than 3800 miles, so I sold it back to the dealer.

19. You mean, EPA or in reality? Who has actually measured performance?
Few respondents bother with measuring their actual performance, I bet. I have a 1992 Saturn, and if I wanted to be misleading, I would post the EPA mileage measure from 1991. However, with 190,000 miles, it can't be running efficiently. I probably get the same mileage as a new minivan.

Do you just drive 40 miles a week, or 4000? If flying
is included, in say a month's travel, how many miles have
you travelled this past month.

As moving a weight a mile costs a unit of energy, the
original act is the burning of the fuel.

Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 05:11 PM by Gregorian
How much energy does one use. That should be the important question. Mileage is just a factor in that overall figure.

I am guilty of driving a beast. But I use less gas than most people. I'm getting 15 mpg.

PS- I ended up getting the very vehicle I cursed people for driving. I'm guilty. But I couldn't move a trailer with a backhoe without it.

I found that by slowing down from 60 mph to 55 mph I could save 11 mpg. That's pretty significant.
