1. I nearly fell outta my chair when I heard her this morning.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 08:58 AM by gatorboy
She was doing the opening for a story about a family that will not shop for an entire year. She said,
"These folks are not going to shop for an entire year....can you?"

Ablugh??? Can I??? Hey, can you, you overpaid ninny?

2. News type shows with whores like Couric should not be considered
anything but entertainment.
Entertaining they are not, but they also are not news.

3. Why doesn't CBS use Andy Rooney's idea?
Take the 20 million or so for Katie and hire reporters and some international staff.
That way you would report the news and bring the viewers who the advertisers want
to market to.

Katie = 24/7 fluff news.

Hotilite (spellings) has fallen so far and I too rarely watch it.

6. Good. I hope it tanks as fast as possible so they get over this
ridiculous "Katie can do serious news" fantasy they have at CBS. The sad thing is that she probably could do a good job if she wanted to, but she spent so much time prancing around in peter pan costumes and showing us her colon that I just can't take her seriously. Well, that and her bias issues.

If CBS wants to put a woman in the anchor desk, (or a man for that matter), they should find someone along the lines of Christiane Amanpour. I might even watch evening news again if they did that.

10. Jane, the medical community reports Katie was responsible for
a huge number of people asking their physicians about having colonoscopies. When they were screened, polyps and even full-blown cancer was found and removed. They did a whole show with those survivors. I saw it. Stop knocking her for that! She lost her young husband due to untreated colon cancer. Sheesh.... I'm sorry to tell you your position on this subject is regrettable.

By the way, have YOU been screened for colon cancer?

In peace,

Radio_Lady

PS. The only person I know who showed her face lift and tummy tuck on television was Joan Rivers. Maybe you're confused.

appreciate the good it's brought about as well as the grief she suffered losing her husband.

That still doesn't mean I need to see her or Al Roker's colon when I'm trying to eat breakfast.

Edit: I've had relatives with colon cancer, I know screening is important. The attention she brings to it is important. I recognize that. I just think that particular way of bringing attention to it is a little much.

your BEST friend. (Let's add in your remote control channel changer here since it is the MODERN era.)

For your information, I requested NO anesthesia (just a little anti-anxiety medication) and watched MY OWN COLONOSCOPY last year while Dr. Robert Sheidman at Kaiser gave me a brief lecture as to what I was seeing. It was not that uncomfortable and I was fascinated. I might have been a doctor if my father had encouraged me, but it was the 50s and there were few women in medicine.

Remember, many of us are interested in medical procedures. You may not be. If you're squeamish or disinterested, that's fine. SHUT OFF THE SET, DON'T DISPARAGE SOMEONE WHO IS HONESTLY TRYING TO EDUCATE PEOPLE TO SAVE THEIR LIVES.

Me? I hate seeing SPORTS and STOCK MARKET REPORTS when I eat breakfast -- and I dislike wrestling, QVC, soap operas, most infomercials, horror movies, and cartoons (unless the grandkids are here, when I endure them), etc. etc. I could probably develop a whole list if I wanted to, but why?

You have your choice of dozens of channels now -- hundreds if you are on cable or satellite. It's supposed to be MASS MEDIA! Happy surfing!

Have a good day!

15. I'm well aware of the tv buttons, thanks. Sorry I touched a nerve by
saying I don't want to see another person's colon--Katie's, Al's, Matt's, Ann's or anybody else's-- when I'm eating my cereal.

I know she's done tremendous good in this department educating people and I don't disparage that one bit.

Glad you enjoyed your intestines. Good health too you, and have a good day. :hi:

12. That the Today Show has a wide audience & a big influence is undeniable.
That makes it all the more egregious when Katie insists that Democrats were equally involved in the Abramoff scandal or tries to force Jim Cramer to say that Bush's poll numbers are going to rise.

Urging people to get colonoscopies is admirable. Serving as a shill for the Bush administration is not.

17. Soonerhoosier, why don't we wait until she ACTUALLY GETS the JOB?
Then you can peck her to death if you want. I just don't get it with these vile threads. I have criticized several people on TV and radio here but at least I wait until they get the position first! Anchoring the news is very different than running a morning guest-driven talk show.

More important, we have to understand that network news does not have the "audience saturation" that it used to have and Katie has a chance to do something different with her life.

I don't know your employment history but I'm sure you would not be happy if the world blasted you before you even changed jobs!

I'm outta here.

20. I am pecking her for what she has done at NBC
which is to serve as one of George W. Bush's strongest backers. Yes, the Today show is different from the evening news, but Katie should have maintained far more objectivity than she has done of late.

If I called myself a journalist and were on national TV and went out of my way to defend Bush in a manner that is not consistent with being an objective reporter, I would not be surprised to be called on it on a liberal discussion board.

I don't mean to get into a fight w/you, Radio Lady. I have read and enjoyed many of your posts.

Peace.

7. I just shook my head listening to the station Mrs. ZBDent listens to
in the mornings . . . the local DJ who screamed about "liberals helping the terrorists" by even questioning tax cuts was going on about how "liberal" Katie Couric was moving to CBS. He was saying that it was the final nail in her coffin of credibility (something to that effect).

Like she was a flaming liberal . . .

Steve Martin starts as the wacky weatherman and winds up as the serious anchorman. I believe he made the transition by putting on a pair of glasses.

Katie have glasses?

19. Would you question a man or father about that? I bet you won't.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 10:48 AM by Radio_Lady
Will you feel somehow better -- or worse -- if she talks about her kids? Kathy Lee Gifford got pilloried on that issue, too. She talked about Cory and (I forget the daughter's name) and people blasted her for it. Somehow, Kelly Ripa seems to be avoiding that criticism, although I may be wrong. (This is all on "Live with Regis and Kelly" which I watch occasionally.

Do hate it when a man like David Letterman burbles about his son Harry, and shows some photos? We all say, "Aw-w-w-w, isn't he a cutie?" Nobody thinks a second about it.

The similar thing happened to me on call-in radio. Raising chidren is what we women do. I was open about my kids and my life. It made me a human being on radio. On the air, mostly people were friendly and supportive. A few nutcases got to me and I had to dump their calls. But I got hate mail you wouldn't believe. I also had a RIGHT WING MALE LEAD-IN from 6 AM to 10 AM who told his audience, "She is a mother. She shouldn't be on the radio, she should be home baking cookies for her family." This infuriated me so much that got there early one morning, walked into the studio, flicked on the microphone, and took him on and told him never to bash me again. He was speechless. I was divorced, and needed the money to raise my kids. Oh, the audience loved that. They wanted us to go at it again! (Little did he know that I NEVER bake, cookies or anything else.)

I don't think network news will afford Katie Couric the ability to do many adorable anecdotes about kids. Same thing happened to Larry King, who was an amazing radio talent as a DJ in Florida in the 1950s. The formats after that allowed much less time for the pandemonium that used to be. News is pretty sobersided, if you ask me. Jim Lehrer on his evening PBS show underscores that in spades. Many of my family like his show -- I find it pretty dry. If you want the lighter side of the news, watch Keith Olbermann or Jon Stewart and read some reputable newspaper. Or go on-line at the DU.

Have a good day!

offended that you are inferring my remark is sexist. You don't know me at all. I understand I have struck a nerve, as you are in that biz and a woman, and have put up with a lot of crap, I am sure.

Yes, I would say the same thing about a man if his gratuitous anecdotes had a condescending "I really am just like you even though my salary is equivalent to $50,000 +/- per day" delivery that, in my view, Couric has. I say gratuitous becaus I find the Today Show remarkbly short on news and long on fluff, but watch because I know millions are. That is my perception- and I am entitled to it without being called sexist. Ridiculous. I also find Lauer irritating when he tells his own "i'm just like you" anecdotes.

Again, I understand I struck a nerve. I listen to talk radio (Steph Miller, AAR) and the on-air personality's daily life and experience and opinions ARE the show.. comparing radio and a TV broadcast are not apples to apples. Randi Rhodes talks about raising her daughter... perfectly in context, and she is my numero uno favorite. Though I haven't heard your show!

22. Oh, she is a cutie! I didn't mean to infer you were sexist. Just that
the general nature of the people on this particular thread was to bash people in the media for whatever reason.

You're right. It hit a nerve, both for myself and Barbara Walters and Meredith Viera and Jessica Savitch and a whole host of other women who have tried for years to break down these barriers. Now it seems to be a "you've got to have a certain political viewpoint" to be in the mass media. That seems to have replaced former considerations as to whether you were pretty or not, well spoken, no regional accents, your family situation etc. etc.

Enjoy your daughter! Mine is now 36 years old. (My son is 35.) It goes very fast. Seems like only yesterday...
