Are you experiencing seemingly random "blank pages" when clicking
on threads (just the DU logo showing)? I've received scattered complaints about this happening to certain people, and I need a volunteer to help me figure out the problem. If you're currently experiencing this problem and have some time right now that you can work with me via PM and test some things out, please send me a PM.

Thanks!

35. Hi Elad. I just got the link to this thread. I posted two threads on
the problem Sunday and Monday. In addition to the blank pages, I am locked out of my own journal EXCEPT when I log out of DU! Then, I can see it, but not alter it. I've been all over the block with this over the past two days.

Hope this stays kicked so that "unblock" and "cleita" and a third DUer can get into the act.

37. Me too Radio Lady!
I've been getting the occasional white page with the DU logo since the switch back in early March. We had some threads about it back then too..I know we're not alone.

I just realized today that I only have the problem when I'm logged in.

this problem soon.

In my case, I can't get to my Journal. I can't even SEE it unless I am LOGGED OUT.

Go figure.

Anybody heard from Elad tonight?

8. Wish I could help
but all's well here - fyi, in case it's system/browser specific, running windows 2000 pro sp. 4 (please don't hate me, I'm too lazy to convert to *nix), firefox w/adblock enabled and blocking popups, current zonealarm (free edition) and current avg (free edition) running.

wonder if blank pages are caused by a virus scanner or have they re-installed/updated zone alarm or zone alarm type firewall?

My .02 which is my way of kicking this to the top of the page.

30. DU has screwed up my Dial Up by somehow linking into my Earthlink
and not "releasing the connection" so that it get's stuck with some kind of feed that causes me to have to "reboot."

The problem is intermittant...but at least once a week.

Also I just had a DU crash that caused lots of problems with my computer...including ending up in "Safe Mode" and losing my Norton Anti-Virus. I was only on DU at the time it happened so I have to blame you guys...whether you deserve it or not. But, my Computers seized up while scrolling through DU and I started to get blank pages and odd pages when I logged on this morning. I've spent most of the day trying to restore what I had before this happened doing "System Restore" and even having to reinstall my Norton '06 Anti-Virus because a "hang up/lock in to EarthLink" while I was on DU cause everything to disappear.

I don't know or think this is a DU problem...but I did run my SpyBot and Adaware Software just yesterday and my Norton runs once a week...but somehow being on DU has seemed to cause "glitches" that cost me lots of time. My HomePage is Yahoo and then I go to DU Link when I log in every day...so maybe it's YAHOO who has some kind of glitch that's causing it.

Just was letting you know that DU has been acting strangly lately and while I've not had the specific problems DU'er's are reporting today...I did have OTHER PROBLEMS TODAY...and I've had DU SEIZE my Earthlink and not let go until I rebooted for the last month or so...

I hope some of this helps but it may have nothing to do with DU...I just notice things ....but I'm not too Computer Savvy when it comes to HTML and some tech stuff. I just notice when I have a BIG PROBLEM...and search back to when it happened.

Good Luck!

50. Koko01, again, my husband was up until 4 AM this morning working
through Microsoft STOP error.

Again, I am not blaming the DU, because I was doing other research on the Internet last evening.

My husband has warned me that it looks like the problem is NOT solved. He did everything he could to check out this machine, including repairing Microsoft Windows from an update, as well as cleaning the disk with Norton AV (we have the latest one), Ad-Aware and Spybot, as well as Microsoft's anti-spyware.

This afternoon, my husband plans to install Firefox on this machine, and I will let him do it ASAP.

I do hope the administrators of this site take these complaints very seriously.

I am willing to have Elad or EarlG or Skinner PM me directly and will work with them in any way to fix the problem. This disruption is causing me to rethink my involvement with this site completely.

I really like the journaling, but am telling people with whom I work that the site has been acting strangely and I am attempting to solve the problem.

Can somebody pin this thread so we can get to it easily?

Thanks so much.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

42. That's odd...because today...DU kept taking me back to Yahoo front
page and yesterday it kept linking me to the WaPo and other sites that weren't in a thread I was reading or had linked too. You kept getting a Microsoft page and I kept getting Yahoo and WaPo and one other that I can't remember. I thought it was my Computer then DU then I didn't know what it was...but DU link did keep seizing my internet connection and wouldn't let it go when I tried to get out of it.. Maybe it's just my computer with the weird page thing but it's been seizing up on DU for awhile now.

48. There's one explanation for the Microsoft problem
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 12:50 AM by EarlG
And I'm not suggesting that this is the same problem you're
having, but this has happened to me a couple of times:

When people create hyperlinks in message board posts on DU,
they do it using the following code...

[link:www.yoururl.com|Hyperlink Text]

Note that the "http://" before the "www"
has to be dropped, because the message board software adds it
in automatically. Now, sometimes people forget to leave out
the "http://" like so:

[link:http://www.yoururl.com|Hyperlink Text]

If this happens the software writes http:// into the link
twice, and to your browser the link will look like this:

http://http://www.yoururl.com

Here's the kicker - if you're using Firefox and you type
something it doesn't recognize as a valid web address into the
address bar it will try to perform a Google search on what you
entered, and send you automatically to the number one Google
result (like doing an "I'm Feeling Lucky" search).

You can test this out by simply typing the word
"idiots" into your Firefox address bar, hitting
enter, and seeing what comes up :)

However, in the case of the mistyped URL above, Firefox gets
confused and performs a search on the phrase
"http://"

And the top result for "http://" on Google is - you
guessed it - www.microsoft.com

You can test this out by going to www.google.com, entering
http:// and hitting "I'm Feeling Lucky."

Anyway, like I said, that might not be the problem you're
having but it's happened to me on more than one occasion.

52. EarlG, this is very interesting information. Good to know, but ---
I am still using the old fashioned way to get to links.

I have noticed that the link will (sometimes work) without the http://

So my journal link would be: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Radio_Lady

That is how I am describing it.

How would the "www" get involved there? It is dropped completely in the link above.

So, I type in the full url.

What happens if I just type: journals.democraticunderground.com/Radio_Lady. Not recognized as a real URL.

What about if I type: www.journals.democraticunderground.com/Radio_Lady Is that an appropriate address.

I know that www.democraticunderground.com does work.

The problem is that somehow the coding to my own journal has been corrupted somehow so that I can't open it when I am logged in. I can see it when I am logged out.

Pretty frustrated at this point.

Sorry...

I also couldn't get to your post that I'm responding to right now by clicking on it in the regular thread. Luckily the view all works and the problem doesn't seem to affect that..at least for me it doesn't.

I think I need a shot of Scotch tonight.

But then I remember how bad it tasted to me when we went to Scotland. Just the fumes in the distillery made me nauseated.

I'd take a hot bath but I have sutures in my hand from surgery Monday.

Maybe this is an April Fool's Day that's gone on WAY TOO LONG.

On top of everything, my husband just cancelled our trip to Paris (rioting in the streets near the Eiffel Tower) scheduled on Delta Airlines (pilots striking?).

40. I've had this problem a lot.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 08:29 PM by philosophie_en_rose
I have a few minutes, if you need a guinea pig. It generally happens with popular threads, after clicking "view all."

I am taken to a blank white page with the Democratic Underground logo on it.

82. Interesting. I am finding that if the original post is accessible, and
I open up the "VIEW ALL" option, that seems to cure the problem.

It's when I try to link to just the subject line that I get into trouble.

44. Yes, I've been having that, too
In fact, just now I clicked on the "Smore Gore" thread on the greatest page and got the blank page. It's been happening for a while now, since about the time the journals were added or soon after. I am on dial-up too, if that means anything, I see others have mentioned it.

49. yes! i was hoping for some confimation on the timing
i think one of the recent du upgrades triggered this.
i suppose it's possible that an ie patch triggered it, but i don't recall installing any ie patches in the last month, nor does this problem exist on any site other than du.

59. I agree with this timing. I recall getting blank pages a few times then
but didn't think anything of it. However, when it became persistent -- after I created a journal -- and now I can't get to the journal AT ALL while logged in... it kinda blew my mind.

Thanks for the post.

63. Thanks for the "DON'T HAVE IT" posts... appreciate it, but --
perhaps we should leave this thread for the few or several people who ARE experiencing the problem.

If you have something POSITIVE or A SUGGESTION to try, that would be helpful.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Knowing how many are not having a problem seems to me to be just as important as how many are having a problem, but then again I am not blessed with your divine wisdom.

Pardon me for trying to be helpful. Next time I reply to a post I will of course ask your permission in advance.

admit, Comcast cable has been delightful, although expensive. Way better than AT&T.

89. I keep getting the page about a "bug".
I hit the back button, copy my post, click back to the topic list and then go back to the OP. When I paste my copied post into the reply page, it seems to work.

I don't know why I keep getting a bug.

Maybe I"m "buggin'" someone? Sorry. I know. That wasn't just bad, it was :spank: bad.

working on this.

Have you tried refreshing the page? Some people report that that works. (It didn't for me.)

Does the page start to load, then stall, or does it just go immediately to the blank page? My experience is that the "hourglass" showing that the computer is working/thinking -- never appears.

I did find that going to the PARENT THREAD of the ORIGINAL POSTER, then choosing VIEW ALL, and then SCROLLING DOWN to the selected page -- seemed to allow me to at least see the page normally.

Good luck!
