Rice SLAMS Second Amendment Premise

Rice slams 2nd Am. premise!
Jonathan Steele in Baghdad
Tuesday April 4, 2006
The Guardian
Rice insists that power of militias must be curbed

The disclosure highlights growing US and British concern about the role of militias in sectarian killings, and their links to senior Iraqi politicians. "You can't have in a democracy various groups with arms - you have to have the state with a monopoly on power," Condoleeza Rice, the US secretary of state, said at the end of her two-day visit to Baghdad yesterday.

4. You can't have a democracy with an incompetent NSA, either
They're liable to spend their time preparing speeches which advocate Star Wars funding instead of spending their time trying to detect and prevent possible terrorist attacks.

7. ... and "lefties" wonder WHY I fervently support the 2nd Amendment...
"You can't have in a democracy various groups with arms - you have to have the state with a monopoly on power,..."

Now, if THIS expression of contempt for the individual doesn't justify the Constitutional "Right to keep and bear arms...", I don't know what could!

For years, I've wondered about the vehement, almost virulent rage I've encountered from Progs when they discover my fervent support for the 2nd Amendment... one would almost think I was advocating mass murder or something.
I recall, back in the Woodstock days, the strident expressions of belief that "The State" could NOT be trusted... that, indeed, we were in more peril FROM "The State", than from ANY foreign enemy ("commies", e.g.)... now, however, the SAME people who stood on the barricades screaming "Off The Pigs" are telling me, my neighbors, and everyone else "civilized" (their judgment, not mine!) to disarm in the name of humanity!

I guess I missed the memo that said we could now trust our individual and public safety to the agents of The State (i.e., the Police)...
Someone care to get me a copy of that memo?

I believe in the Bill of Rights... the ENTIRE Bill of Rights.

The way things are headed, I'd be shocked if more liberals weren't keeping and bearing arms.

14. xchrom knowns his/her history
Agreed, but I think what the poster is trying to relate to us is Rice is speaking as in a Totalitarian-Dictatorship manner.

Sort of like living under another New Imperialism whereas the state could become another monarchy, Old Regime style.

In sadder other words, a military-state. Lost Democratic freedoms. The shredding of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I was ambivalent until Bushco came along. That's when I realized how important it is to have the 2nd amendment to prevent despotism.

16. I used to tear up the NRA apps I got in the mail.
I don't tear them up anymore. I just toss them away. My knee jerk disgust with the NRA
seems to have dissolved with every jelly fish spineless act of my own party that I presumed would protect me from
a fascist state. NRA folks now speak in many ways I respect and that is in the way that carries a deep suspicion of authority.
Balkanization is not to be envied. Neighbor shooting neighbor is no paradise.
Another cold splash of reality is the fact that Big Brother will always have more and bigger guns than the citizenry.
Now that I have come face to face with the awful and perhaps likely evolution of this country into a fascist state, well,
is that NRA guy really my enemy?
Oh and P.S.
Condy. Nice Move. You, President of the United States?
Not now.

21. Tricky Dick was an early gun controller
He wasn't really wild about anti war protestors, leftists, black activists, etc. being armed. Hell he was halfway of a mind that the executive branch should be the sole arbiter of who can project force and who can't.

Hell, the first gun controllers in our nation's history were the KKK...can't have those pesky freed slaves defending themselves from us, now can we?

When you see who you're aligned with when you adopt a GC position...it has to make you pause for a moment.

11. The US Secretary of State saying something such as this
...even if it's not about the US, should be a wake up call to many Americans. I know it will fall on deaf ears where a wake up is most needed, but how will they feel when their elected government is coming to take away their guns?

13. That is exactly what I think.. If she is singing the song there, how long
until she sings the song here?? I'm not saying that the idea would go over here. In fact, I think it would be a huge disaster, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't try it.. If she has such obvious disregard and contempt of the idea, how long until it spills over into America in some fashion??

15. I don't think she's alone in her dislike of having the masses armed
I don't doubt there are many more in this Admin who don't support the Second Amendment. They won't say it in so many words, that would be political death, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them continue to chip away at our rights until this one is also little more than a story we tell our grandchildren.

20. Forward thinking
It's so much easier to profile a person and deal with what they may do now, rather than wait until they actually do something.

This is the brilliant thought process that got us into Iraq in the first place. Again, those who should be concerned about this trend won't begin to entertain the notion that it could be applied to them just as easily.

30. Maybe a statement like this will wake up some on the left...
that gun rights does not equal The NRA, or being a republican, or a hillbilly, ect..., as the debate always seems to be framed here. The Bush admin didn't do anything in New Orleans when citizens were left to defend themselves, and on top of that, they even allowed firearm confiscation. And now, the appear to think it should go international. Law abiding individuals have the right, and with this administration they NEED the right to be able to own firearms.

Rice is a fucktard and her future political aspirations (at least at the national level) are over with a stupid statement like that.

Now, lets make sure that one thing our 2008 nominee understands is that we have the right to keep and bear arms.

31. True colors
I see the administration's true colors are shining through now. "Monopoly of force" = totalitarianism. One of the ways to exert more control on a populace is to remove the instruments they would need to overthrow the existing power structure. That can be free speech, press, guns, privacy, whatever.
