It's ABC's Vieira for "Today"; future of Mrs. Dan Senor not known
NYT: NBC Said to Be Close to Signing Vieira for 'Today'
By JACQUES STEINBERG
Published: April 4, 2006

As CBS nears a deal to make Katie Couric the next anchor of its evening news program, NBC moved close today to reaching agreement with Meredith Vieira of ABC to replace Ms. Couric as co-host of the "Today" show, a person who had been briefed on the negotiations said early this afternoon.

Under the terms of the deal, which could be completed as soon as this evening but is expected to be resolved no later than week's end, Ms. Vieira would sign a four-year contract worth at least $10 million a year and would take up her morning assignment on NBC just after Labor Day, said the person, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing.

While Ms. Vieira would leave her position as co-host of the talk show "The View" on ABC when her contract ends this summer, she and NBC have yet to resolve whether she would fulfill the two years that remain on her contract to be the host of the syndicated game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." That program is produced, in part, by Buena Vista Television, which, like ABC, is owned by the Walt Disney Company.

Though the individual with knowledge of the negotiations said there was a "strong possibility" that an agreement with Ms. Vieira would be struck over the next few days, no announcement is believed to be imminent, at least not before Ms. Couric discloses her own plans....

***

Ms. Vieira, 52, emerged earlier this year as the best-known candidate under consideration to replace Ms. Couric, who has been with "Today" for 15 years, a period in which it has dominated its closest competitor, "Good Morning America" on ABC. After beginning her career as a local television news reporter in the mid-1970's, Ms. Vieira went on to high-profile assignments at CBS News (including "60 Minutes") and later ABC News (the magazine "Turning Point")....

4. Mrs. Dan Senor = Mrs. Junior Viceroy.
I'm sure the happy couple will both get what they deserve.

5. Meredith Viera will make Khatie look like
Eric Severeid. I watch The View every day--masochism and I blog about it--and the woman is one of the dimmest bulbs in all of TV. It's going to make Today look like The Matt Lauer show, almost by default. It's going to be just awful.

6. what does it say about our society than any of these people get salaries..
..like that for doing work like that? $10 million a year? For hosting a show?

It's sick.

7. If Katie goes to CBS, then I'm truly done with 'network' news. It's the
only evening news I watch anymore.

8. I wonder how REAL newspeople feel about this?
They must be just sick about it.

I have absolutely nothing against Katie as a "Today" anchor (I don't watch, but from what I've read about her she seems like a nice person), but as a news anchor? It just doesn't seem fair to get one of the most important, high-profile jobs in news on the basis of sitting on a couch with Matt Lauer. And for her to be the first woman to anchor a network evening news show, the face of "women in the news" but coming with a ready-made L for Lightweight on her forehead, doesn't seem fair to the women journalists who are working their asses off in the trenches to earn real respect.

15. Actually - doing the evening news seems easier than the am news
Mostly reading and sounding m/l serious. Doesn't seem like they even do interviews much.

The morning people have to pretend to be happy and friendly and whatnot.

Not that I watch either of them very often. I prefer Democracy Now!

9. "The View" will probably tank if she leaves...
Meredith kinda holds that show together. And we've already seen what a great job they do at finding replacements whenever they added that stupid-ass, blonde, right-wing airhead.

12. Some years ago Viera
was pissing and moaning on "The View" about her son being picked on by the other kids in his class because he was supporting a war on Iraq.
I see that she later changed her mind, as he probably has, as he got closer to an age where he could "put his ass were his mouth is".

17. I can't stand Vieira.
Years ago while doing a feature on some baseball team, a presumably nonpolitical feature, she asked the catcher if he could identify with Monica Lewinsky, being on his knees all the time. I was so pissed, I wrote The View and quit watching it.

21. In the right context, I'd agree.
But she's no comedian and this feature had nothing to do with politics. The catcher actually seemed embarassed by the question.

20. She's had some despicable comments on Hillary Clinton.
A couple of years ago, she touted some wingnut book that claimed that Hillary was physically abusing Bill by throwing lamps at him.

That was the END of watching that twit.
