This is just ridiculous! CanOfun is continually getting more and more aggravating to use! So much so, that I can no longer view the videos period.

The site originally was great! Timely video clips presented in a nice chronological order. The videos were all direct-downloads. I could download the videos and save them, watch them later, etc. They had a great thumbnail view of all the videos. It was really decent!

Then the forced streaming came. The downloading came to an end. The nice thumbnail view was replaced by some goofy forum software. No fun at all. But, I lived with it.

Until today.

I now see that CanOfun videos no longer work with Firefox.

They recommend installing some byzantine ActiveX hack plug-in to get WMP embedded into Firefox. Come on, man! That's just downright unacceptable in this day and age...

CanOFun is a free, hobby video site. I've had a message board since the year 1999, and in the year 2004 started making video clips because I was concerned that the media was not representing some critical issues that were important to me-and I wanted to save them. I got so many clips that were on a page that I decided to put them into a database. That was the view you saw for awhile with the video links and pictures, 5 across, and about 30 to a page. Then, as is my prerogative, I decided to make the videos streaming after a server crash late last year. After awhile, I also wanted to allow for comments and decided that using the message board software would be ideal, since it already has some features built in that make it excellent for that. Instead of updating the videos in two places, ie, the database for videos 30 on a page AND the message board, I decided that I would put them as threads on a message board with the pictures. Last week I decided to work on recreating the videos by date page with pictures and did, along with paging effects.

Technically, when I updated to streaming, some people didn't like it. A few of the ones complaining were those that were taking my videos and putting them up in other places without asking. Others, particularly MAC users, had problems and I spent a considerable amount of time fixing some things on the server to accomodate the MAC users and provide solutions... and they worked-I heard from a lot of MAC users that, after trying the possible solutions I pointed to, everything worked, so I have to assume that anyone for whom it didn't work didn't attempt to make it work. When I made the changes today, I had not one person that contacted me directly to tell me they had a problem with Firefox so I guess they thought I should know by osmosis. Even if someone couldn't figure out, on the login screen on CanOFun how to email the administrator, it isn't as if, on the video threads themselves, a person having a problem couldn't send me a PM. But no one did-the person starting this thread just decided to bitch. My site is free and my time is my own, but I can tell you that I have tried hard when I have known of problems to help the person solve them-and the Firefox problem will be no exception for anyone that is at least polite to me, instead of reaming me behind my back.

Now, as I talk about this next part, bear several things in mind. First, a number of people post videos and audio from other sites here. Those sites have the right to decide how they want to display their video, their messages, etc and you don't see me bitching about them. And you won't. Because I respect the right of people who own sites to decide how they want to display their stuff. And especially when they are FREE to people, as mine is. Second, what other site is perfect? If I had a slow connection, I couldn't watch videos on a lot of sites-I saw Eschaton about a month ago tell his MAC users "I don't care" when he posted a link to an MSNBC website video. I went to watch a video this evening that someone posted on YouTube.. and it buffered buffered buffered. Third, there are plenty of video and audio clippers around- if you don't like CanOFun for some reason, you can choose to go to a different site or you can make your own. (I've even, on more than one occasion, given instructions on how to do it-I think if you're gonna watch, you OUGHT to consider clipping it). Someone cursed at me the other day because I didn't watch Larry King and record it-I think that person must have mistaken me for a paid servant instead of someone who watches certain things for enjoyment and likes to share... but not everything... I have Fox blocked, for example, and if Jesus himself went on Fox I wouldn't watch it... but wait for Jesus to hit the other so-called "news" shows.

I have been followed around on this board and attacked by a couple of people in particular, and I don't like it. Would you? In the case of the one person, because I don't meet his idea of what I ought to do with my content-he was taking it without asking and then griped when I asked him to stop. I suppose I could stay quiet when he trashes me and CanOFun but, unlike Kerry, I refuse to be swift-boated without a fight.

About a month ago, I noticed that a porn site was taking, if not all, most of the links from my site and posting them on their page lodged between two columns of very graphic porn pics. I was disturbed, for one reason because I don't particularly want it to appear that I have some kind of deal... with a porn site.... (There was ONE exception to my general rule that I like people to link to the site). The changes in the last few days were done to limit what sites such as this would do. And anyone on this thread that has the nerve to say that, ON MY FREE SITE, I can't have people login to see archives, is nuts. I don't require logins on the most current material, only if you want to look at the older stuff. Why? So if I see unscrupulous people on, I can ban them. Someone wants to say that I don't have the right to do that on my website? Tough.

Now, I want to iterate that I didn't anticipate the Firefox users would have trouble. And you can believe I'm not thumbing my nose at the problem but demmit, how about you PM me if you're having problems so I can find out the circumstances? It's simply not fair to take potshots at me when you're not willing, first, to even approach me to notify me.

Bottom line. For those who like CanOFun and appreciate it, keep on coming. For those who don't like it and want to whine and attack me, sorry, I don't know that I want you on my site anyway.

If you were taking a monthly membership fee, I can see where one could complain... but honestly, I appreciate from the bottom of my heart what you're doing and have done. I always wanted to provide this service myself, as one who Tivos programming and live-transcribes as much as possible, just to give to those who are hungry for information.

That said, I have never had any problems at CanOFun. When I was on dialup, I knew how long it would take, and it took many other video hosting sites longer. Now that I've finally upgraded to cable, I love how fast they load, and the quality of the videos. PARTICULARLY because they're free!

It can be a little confusing to navigate, but so what. I am confident that I am intellectually capable of finding a link and clicking on it, even if someone hasn't been paid several thousand dollars to make it easy for me.

The main thing is, I know how much time and effort goes into maintaining something like that and I really appreciate it--especially as it saves me the money and aggravation I would otherwise have to spend on cable television. It really is amazing to see the attitude some people take about stuff like this--as if, because you've decided to do something on your own initiative and for no money, that somehow puts you under the obligation to cater to the demands of the entire cybercommunity. My attitude has always been: dude, are you paying me? No? Then I don't work for you. Deal with it.

Anyway, CanOFun is a great resource and it has given me many hours of much-needed entertainment. You go.

7. Well, Canofun (CoF) was having some trouble recently with some

jerk that was hotlinking to CoF from some porno site. So, CoF has been tweaking around with the site recently to try and prevent this porno guy from doing it. Perhaps it's those "tweaks" which make CoF no longer compatible with Firefox.

I can understand your frustration, I share it a little - I hate having to "sign up" or "log in" just to read/watch the posts at a website. I also agree that I'd prefer the option of being able to download the videos...the streaming doesn't always load very fast (lots of "buffering" pauses are irritating.)

It's a shame, because Canofun probably has one of the largest databases of videos on the internet (more vids than even Crooks and Liars now) - but those are videos people can't download and put to alternate "uses" (such as my hobby - making political satire videos).

Write an e-mail to "bip" voicing your concerns in a nice way, and maybe you can pursuade CoF to switch back to the more "user friendly" site it once was. :shrug:

One good blog that has a few (usually funny) videos is "http://www.onegoodmove.org/1gm/"

But it ain't no substitute. The other site that has good videos (but tons of wingnut spin) is "exposetheleft.com". It usually posts a lot of political TV that you can download.

They're doing it wrong. They need to nest an EMBED tag inside of the OBJECT tag.

If they do it like this it should work for everybody who can play Windows Media Player files.

...I have to agree. I know that bandwidth can be spendy, especially when you are moving lots of video. But, there has to be a balance, and a good design.

For example, why aren't there any "blog ads" at Can O Fun? That would help pay for the site. Second of all, if the site is too restrictive, then less people show up, which means LESS revenue from blog ads.

The site is a little difficult to navigate around too - it has taken me a while to understand how it works. I get it now, but it's not even close to being "intuitive". This probably turns off a TON of potential visitors.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Can-O-Fun, and I only want to see it succeed. :bounce:

I used to have trouble with the site and mentioned it here in a thread. Liveoak was wonderful. Saw my post, sent me a PM, fixed the problem. Liveoak spent a considerable amount of time on it too and PMed me a bunch of times to see if it was working yet. I don't know that I ever really expressed my gratitude for that. But I have been a big fan of canofun ever since. So sure, I don't mind registering. Not in the least.

I enjoy canofun and am grateful for the vids.

I think they need some advertising revenue (look at crooksandliars) and some layout work. And obviously there's problems with the videos playing and the java crashing people.
I can't do better and most on this thread probably can't either, but that does not preclude them from communicating how canofun is working (or not working) for them.

CanOFun is a FREE compilation that I visit at LEAST every other day.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. All three big Sunday talk shows are on at the same time in my cable area - it is impossible to watch them all.
