I think we all had a round with him at one time or another. He really got on my nerves. :)

I recall how he liked to spout Repub bullshit about working hard and becoming wealthy and that cutting taxes were good for the economy and how Reagan had the right idea and how he worked for minimum wage but someday he was was going to be rich like a Republican too and that we were all "left-wing radicals" if you didn't believe with his "moderate" approach...etc..etc...

12. He's a regular guy
who speaks his mind frankly, and for that, his authenticity made him a
great participant in debates, as he is certainly anything but politically
correct. I can't say i agreed nor disagreed with him, just that i felt
him to be an excellent agent provocateur.

He got banned a coupla years back, too bad we can't have amnesty for

62. Thanks, this link works.
This is Carlos all right. Carlos had strong opinions and there wasn't any dispute he would shy away from. He was a centrist or a moderate Democrat---definitely not a liberal.

Some far-left liberal DUers would just rip into him and he would find himself on the receiving end of a flamefest. He held his own pretty well and he was consistent. Every time he would make a point it never failed to get a negative reaction---although, not always. There were many who agreed with some of his opinions.

Carlos had good analytical skills and had a good memory for details about candidates and differents political races around the country.

He loved Lieberman and hated Nader. Carlos would back up many of his statements with actual stats and it would support much of what he said.

I kind of miss him and hope he is doing well whereever he is.

Then he moved to north Miami after graduation and had plenty of trouble there, with his job and getting mugged, etc. Carlos detailed everything in Lounge posts that were increasingly frantic. It was good for him to get out of there and back to the DC area, with a chaotic stop in between, staying with his brother and family in Iowa. I haven't heard from Carlos in a couple of years but I'm glad to see he is posting on Kos again. I checked recently and there was nothing from him for months on Kos.

56. His posts on voting trends were interesting
He would look at electoral maps, for example, and find counties with voting trends he didn't understand, then post threads asking DUers about it. To me it was excellent stuff. He always responded to my statistically-oriented threads, more reliably than any other DUer, even though he didn't always agree with me.

Carlos jumped into almost every argument and certain ones he wouldn't let go of. The names have already been mentioned -- Nader, Lieberman, McKinney, Moore. I think he finally got booted when he posted the same negative opinions about Al Sharpton in what was designated as a "Sharpton Supporters" thread.

58. No, he was adamant about not coming back to DU
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 02:07 AM by Awsi Dooger
For maybe a year after he was banned I emailed with Carlos fairly regularly. Before he got banned I think there were warnings and he had disputes with some of the higher ups here. Of course, let me emphasize I was getting Carlos' spin on the matter so I'm not sure what the full truth was.

He said many posters would complain about him, I suppose to the administrators, and the DU brass PMed that they were sick of dealing with it all the time. Carlos' side was the complaints weren't justified and more of a piling on attempt by the same posters who didn't agree with his less-than-liberal views. He thought the final matter in the Sharpton thread was overblown but since it came on top of the previous incidents and warnings it prompted the ban. I asked him about getting reinstated but he wanted nothing of it, saying he was happy at Kos. But I can tell you he obviously did follow DU closely even after being banned, because he mentioned the BevHarris and TIA episodes frequently via email.

63. Carlos had the classic personality of somebody
who has been frequently bullied. The confrontational nature of much of his discourse came from being bullied - a means to strike back at the people who bullied him. He suffered a great deal of bullying here on DU from people who, whilst they should have known better always seemed to forget.

If you think it is impossible for people on DU to bully somebody - just think about this thread - it was started to call out a long gone poster who nobody really liked.

50. No post there. Deleted?
Carlos, for those of you who didn't know him, was a moderate - right down the middle. He could be annoying. I agreed with him 100% on Nader and I still do. Carlos was the MOST picked on DUer ever. I felt sorry for him. But he was a pit bull when it came to his opinions. Didn't know when to give it a rest. I've seen it said he couldn't resist a Nader post. Some people on here couldn't resist a Carlos post and would jump in, no matter what it was about, and rag him endlessly. People weren't nice to him, but he was more polite than many here, and I liked him too. He was a young, single college kid with some bad luck and without much family support. I don't believe he was Cuban, but not sure. I PM'd with him a couple of times.

And you're right, he didn't have great support from other familty members.

He had a ton of posts here, tens of thousands. Certain DUers did salivate at the chance to rip Jiacinto. He handled it OK when he was in college but when he had the trouble in Miami his posts became increasingly erratic and troubled. I remember a few times he posted threads in the Lounge and when no one responded within 5 or 7 minutes he would respond to his own thread with simply the words, "Reply! Reply!"

69. I found him irritating at times,
especially when he would lecture about how Evan Bayh had to vote center right because he was from a *red* state - and I live in said state - and am very familiar with how right or not on different votes Bayh had to go - and by now my early conventional wisdom (that he had been centrist, elected state-wide three times - now four - as a centrist, but moved further right after going to DC - much further than he needed to go for this state... but was doing so to position himself for a higher office). He didn't want to hear it, and was rudely patronizing about it. I think that he participated a bit in setting the stage for pile-ons - due to the behavior that I describe in my interactions with him over Bayh. I tried a couple of times to coach him on how to make points without being quite so belligerent - so that some real discussions could follow - as some issues he raised could have been thought provoking if folks were conversing instead of tossing molotov cocktails at each other.

That said, I also recognized him as a person - I watched him grow a bit after reading and discussing 'nickle and dimed to death' and have some realizations about the different america that many people experience compared to his and his college friends had experienced. I also remember it seemed like he was really going over an edge, and I was concerned about him during the time you are refering to (in the lounge.)

I hope that he is okay. However I can't say that I miss being patronized by a kid who tried to throw his credentials out as being "more" than many others (his was a good school, he worked in dc, etc.) - without knowing the credentials of those to whom he was being patronizing (for example, I went to a substantial school, I worked in dc, I also worked in the dem consulting circle in dc for a period).

Nah---we're just interested in the Psyche of a guy like Carlos. He was certainly one of a kind here at DU.

70. indeed it is sort of a form of flattery
that one poster is so clearly recalled, two years or so after his last post here.

Can I admit that I was ever, ever so slightly fond (as in the akward little brother sort of fond) of his annoying (as in a gnat annoyance) antics. Perhaps more fond in hindsight/memory - than in real-time.

The fact that so many also recall so much about him... suggests that others might (begrudgingly) have the same reaction.
