I just bought my copy of Brokeback Mnt at Walmart! (read why)
Well I just got back from Walmart where I went to get my copy of Brokeback Mont. I went to my local WAlmart, in Charles Town WV, and get it, they had it in both wide screen and full screen, in 2 places, with one of the sleaves things (the dvd holder thing) "Sold Out".

Why did I do it, I wanted to send a message to Walmart in some small way that there are people in rural America that ARE GAY, or at least OPEN to all movies...

As I was getting it, I had to kind of excuse myself because a gal was looking at a copy of Narnia. I did not see it myself, but my partner said she gave me a LOOK when I grabbed the DVD. I say F her!

To be honest, I do not even care to see the movie, I have a few DVD's that have gay cowbows in them, and they end in way more than a kill and a silly line...but I digress. I wanted to support the gay movie...

So there, I went to Walmart and I sent a message, that message was, "Thank you for giving ME the option of what I want to see, and not to cowtail to the freak uber-right"

1. In the past, WalMart has censored stuff, but I'm happy to hear
they are going with this film.

If folks don't want to buy it, they don't have to.

But if they miss seeing it, they are missing one of the landmark films of all time. Ang Lee put together a fine, fine thing with this film.

I understand your strategy, Ioo, & say congrats.

13. I Read that Brokeback isn't Censored at Wal-Mart
They censor CDs, but not films. It's the full theatrical version.

14. Hi, tlsmith1963. I didn't know WalMart made that distinction, but
I'm glad they are going with BROKEBACK. I wonder if Joni Mitchell's CDs ever upset them; sometimes she can turn the air blue.

As for BROKEBACK, it's a hell of a good film.

2. I think that is a good reason to shop at Wal-Mart...
And I had no idea Brokeback Mountain was for sale, so soon...

Cool.

:hi:

4. Is it the full version or a Wallmartized version...
haven't they insisted on sanitized versions of some movies and music in the past?

6. Don't know about movies, but they've forced edits in music CDs.

7. Too bad you didn't get from a locally owned business.....
Buying anything from WalMart hurts locally owned businesses. They are corporate scum and could care less about your "statement". Buy local and support the small guys WalMart is trying to put out of business. Thats a much bigger statement.

8. Better yet...
In WV, a locally owned business would almost certainly not carry it. Make em feel the pain by going in, asking for it, upon being told no, tell em you're going to walmart to get it. Mention that there are other things (which the local store of course carries) that you need to pick up anyway.

Now that's pain - make the local bigot choose between his business, and his bigotry.

9. Ummm, In the best of time Charles Town WV had no local DVD store.
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 09:21 PM by Ioo
Dude, I mean really, this is Charles Town WV. We NEVER had a local seller of music and movies... In fact, I am not sure if I ever recall ANY Movie or Music store being "local" in a better part of 25 years, not in Tampa, or any place else...

Furthmore, most local buss is long gone from Charles Town. Even if I wanted to (I buy all my dog food from a small store in the main town (Fins, Feathers, and Friends)), she has like 2 Bush/Cheney 2004 stickers in her store.

So ti be honest, the damage that is Walmart has cleaned us out, there is little other choose.

16. Actually, buying this ONE item at Wal-Mart makes a statement.
You're not gonna fight the "evil giant" by boycotting them (as a disclaimer, I, too, refuse to shop at Wal-Mart). There are just too many people who like their prices and/or aren't politically or economically aware.

Buying a DVD like this at Wal-Mart is a small way to effect change from within. Show them there's a profit to be had by taking the "religious/moral" stick out of their ass. Will it work? Who knows...but I support buying Brokeback Mountain at Wal-Mart, at least as an experiment.

10. You might need to have someone who has seen the Theater version...
...watch it to see if they did a "Wal~Mart Edit" on it. They might have cut out all the "Gay Cowboy" stuff.

I never buy any Music there, because I hate that they feel they can edit other peoples work, just because they are Wal~Mart.

BTW; They refused to sell even the edited version of Hank Williams III's latest CD, because they wanted to re-edit even the edited version he gave to them to sell.

11. I think they have to say it is edited, and I am sure that ...
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 09:27 PM by Ioo
Lee would have said no. The box is the same as the one on Amazon and Target, and it says nothing about being edited. I also just did a google, and say nothing saying that Walmart was releasing it's own vers.

I mean face it, it won 3 AA's, Walmart is far more happy with MONEY than CHRISTIANS, and this movie will sell.

12. I Heard...
that the fundies are angry at Wal-Mart because they have big signs in their stores promoting the movie Brokeback Mtn. Well, Wal-Mart does that for *all* the big movies that come out. I get so tired out of these fundie freaks making a big deal out of nothing. And they have no right to tell other people what to watch. The market decides, not them.

15. the studios BUY that space and send the displays
for the time that that product is available as a new release (usually a full week until the next new release Tuesday) they OWN that floor or shelf space.

The studios don't mess around with that kind of thing. Walmart would not have much say on what film gets displayed as that would be up to the studio that bought the footage.

Hee hee ... I like that they had to display this one so they can display some other more "Wal-Mart like" movie by the same studio later.

Good for you. Eventually, they will figure out that liberals spend their money when they want something too!

17. Walmart also sells the Queer As Folk DVDs. . .
(of which I am a big fan)_ Off the hook, but very *interesting* soap opera stuff.

This from a retailer who would not develop my husband's photos from the Sturgis Rally.

Go figure. . .

18. I will get my copy of BBM somewhere else...
Wal-Mart is a very conservative (greedy) company. So what they are really doing is making more Republican Neo-con bucks off liberals. When you give Wal-Mart your bucks for something/Anything you are actually contributing to the next Republican President.

Yes, it is difficult not to shop at Wal-Mart for Necessities since their prices are lower then anybody elses in town. But you do have to remember that they are con-ing our community (Gay) into supporting their bigotry...Its a face they are wearing.

I will support this film, but I will do what I can to not contribute to Neo-Cons.

And dont forget, Wal-Mart will sell you a shot gun and ammo, but you can not buy a Marilyn Manson disc there.
