This latest sex scandal regarding Brian Doyle and the DHS just emphasizes some things that have been buzzing under the surface for some time. Put some things together--Gannon/Guckert, the well-known but rarely-reported stories about Little Boots' proclivities, the odd--persona?--is that the word?--of Karl Rove...I remember when Gannongate had a little press traction, seeing Howard Kurtz and Wolfie on CNN...and looking as if they were going to wet themselves on national television just discussing it...remembering the classic connections between some types of fascism/militarism and bisexuality--the rumors about McCarthy and Cohn--recall Ernst Rohm and the pre-1934 SA...and add to this the still unresolved question as to why we REALLY went to war in Iraq...add the entire torture scandal, and why so many of these people seem to get off on it, and why their "explanations" of it--and the war itself--are such obvious lies, and that the media seems to largely acept these lies... Again: why Iraq? All the explanations are BS, and many of them cancel each other out. Any complex historical event has numerous causes, and I don't intend to offer any monocausal explanation of it. But what if--what if--one major reason for it--at least from Little Boots' point of view--is simply as a way of getting his kicks? That he started the war for *thrills*? This seems unthinkable at first. But think how many inchoate images and pieces of evidence come together under this theory. Why does he persist, for instance, when everyone in the world knows it's a massive fuck-up? Why does he insist that the troops will be there until the next President takes over? Because he simply doesn't *want* to pull them out? Why do so many of these people seem to have no real human connection to the troops, the men and women suffering and dying?...is it because they don't *have* any real feelings for them, simply regarding them as so many video-game characters, there to suffer for the needs--the amusement--of the man who sent them there? This theory sounds monstrous. Impossible. I don't even claim to "believe" it. It puts Bush, morally, on the level of Hitler or Caligula, an honest-to-goodness drooling perverted psychopath. But the longer this criminal regime goes on, the more I feel in my gut that this is the true nature of this man, these men...at least, a cabal of them...and history shows that human nature is totally capable of this explanation being true...do I need even quote Acton on absolute power...? Again--this might not, isn't, the ONLY reason for the actions of this administration...and I'm not suggesting, really, this latest DHS scandal has any broader meaning. But haven't we all felt, all along, that there are things just beyond our understanding about these people, this regime? Of currents under the surface? I think this makes as much sense as anything else...
