3. Of course.
Equality for all. If people are more comfortable calling it civil unions, so be it.

5. I only know the ones are not for it, like Feinstein.
Feingold made a brave move on this.

Washington -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein, appearing at a hearing Tuesday on gay marriage, criticized a newly drafted constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage as "highly ambiguous," saying it could prevent states from offering civil unions to gay and lesbian couples.

Feinstein said she personally believes marriage should be between a man and a woman but opposes the amendment. She said states should be allowed to make their own determination on the issue.

"Let's not jump to the first constitutional amendment in our history that would limit rather than expand the rights of American citizens to be free," she said.

perspective (age 50), we've had amazing changes in the last ten years or so.

I think that it is unfortunate that the timing of the MA decision allowed the Republicans to use this as a wedge issue. I also think we wouldn't have had the backlash if we had gone for civil unions.

11. Well you are so much older than me.
3 years :)

Yeah, the timing was off kilter but with this bunch, and this issue, when would be good? Bravo to Feingold for doing right.

12. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but without a backlash I felt that this
controversy was just going to go away (as we oldsters die off), because young adults in my daughter's generation are far more "liberal" on the issue.

13. So preventing a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage
should be the #1 priority, because that would be making it harder for the coming generations to effect change.

and if they want or need a church ceremony and can find one that'll grant them such, power to 'em. Marriage is a religious covenant - church territory - and should be recognized when performed.
