"He needed to raise money for the defense fund. That was the bottom line," Feehery said. "He wanted to make sure he could take care of himself in the court of law." Under federal campaign rules, any reelection money a lawmaker raises can be used to pay legal fees stemming from official duties.

So the GOP candidate will be selected by party chairs. And a main reason for DeLay to stay in the race this long was to raise legal fees under the guise of raising money to run a political campaign.

I wish I could find the post, but right before the primary there was a thread here suspecting that DeLay was using this election to build up his defense fund. IIRC at one point he was doing fundraisers for both.

I have no pity on the fools who threw their money away on this slimeball and am glad his intimidation tactics have been subdued, but it's not yet vanquished.

The good thing is a year ago no one here in their wildest dreams would have though DeLay would be out of the leadership, yet alone Congress. The bad thing is that he's still walking the streets and will feret himself into K Street if he isn't convicted.

Not that it would matter to him, but I would think that the funds would have to be given to the Repugs if they weren't used for his campaign.
