Peace rallies
Discouragement creeps into ranks of protesters
By Lewis Diuguid The Kansas City Star
Peace is an unpopular and frustrating pursuit. Yet it is encouraging to talk with people who remain riveted to the cause. They still get excited when motorists honk their approval and aren’t dissuaded by the cursing and obscene gestures of others who back Bush and the wars.
Even people working for a lasting peace suffer burnout and disillusionment.
Many of them resurfaced at the March 19 peace rally at Mill Creek Park near the Country Club Plaza to protest the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. They were among about 1,000 people who filled the park to hold signs, listen to speakers and be moved by the exhibits.
But their appearances and the size of the crowd were unusual. The disheartened have been missing from the peace rallies that preceded the big event and those that followed, including a pro-war spoof on April Fools’ Day. That one was fun, although the normally enthusiastic honking of passing motorists was missing. Satire escapes people who only have a drive-by investment in peace.
