Darwin Animal FOUND!
Fossil Fish Sheds Light on Transition

NEW YORK (AP) -- Scientists have caught a fossil fish in the act of adapting toward a life on land, a discovery that sheds new light one of the greatest transformations in the history of animals.

Scientists have long known that fish evolved into the first creatures on land with four legs and backbones more than 365 million years ago, but they've had precious little fossil evidence to document how it happened.

16. Monarch butterflies are.
They have tiny deposits of Magnetite (a magnetic mineral) in their wings, which helps them navigate during their migration. But if you find one stuck to your bumper, you were probably driving too fast.

5. Cool! Thanks!
I'm amazed at how much the skull resembles that of an alligator or crocodile.

BTW, spending months on Ellesmere Island doesn't sound at all like a ton of fun! I guess I'm a wimp.

27. The thing that amazes me is, these folks were so skilled that they said,
"We want to go and find fossils of transitional water/land animals," then they planned exactly where to look and did exactly what they'd planned.

31. Ellesmere Island is a treasure trove
Scientists have been going there for fossils since about 1860...

"The Arctic Eocene 55 million years ago was just a very different place," Eberle explains in a phone interview from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, where she is an ancient mammal expert.

"I picture what I see in the Arctic in the Eocene as very much like today’s southeastern United States including eastern Texas — cypress swamps filled with alligators, all sorts of turtles, these red-eared sliders sitting along the edge of the bayou. This is the kind of environment I see — a nice, wet, humid swamp."

lots more - http://www.nunatsiaq.com/archives/nunavut020719/news/features/20719_02.html

google "Ellesmere Island fossils' for tons more info. :)

18. transitional forms
Another blow to the you can't spell idiot without ID crowd who're always complaining about the lack of "transitional forms" even though the fossil record is full of them as well as their micro vs. macro spiel( if this is not speciation or evidence of, I don't know what is). This will not, of course, satisfy them in that IMO their major complaint about evilution right after the one about it cuts their deity out of the game is that it doesn't seem to proceed according to their lights and specifications. The old half a wing, eye, you name the feature argument. Still a great find I'm sure the paleontological world is as aflutter as they are likely to get. My thanks.

24. The creationist mindset.
If you show them a transitional fossil which fills a gap, they just see two more gaps. One on each side of it!

38. re: transitional forms
It is possible to have evolution without the transitional forms. It is also possible to believe in God and evolution.

11. Yes. Gawd is testing us.
As a faithful follower of the Reverend Pat Roberson, I expect him to issue a Patwa that the scientist be stricken by lightning so that his testicles are blown off.

That'll teach him gawd's love and how to behave and not to be scientificating and all.

19. If I believed in Gawd
I would think he's a wee bit pissed at the creationists, er, excuse, intelligent designists".

In the past few months, scientists have found living creatures once thought to be extinct (some rat squirrel thingy), a possible "missing link era" skull (containing features from both earlier and later human developmental periods) and now the water/land fish!

Maybe their Gawd is just going to keep throwing bones in their faces until they get it.

(Hint to their Gawd--trying literally throwing the bones in their faces. They're a bit thick-skulled)

http://www.nature.com/news/2006/060403/full/060403-7.html

The fossilized remains of Tiktaalik show a crocodile-like creature with joints in its front arms.

Ah-HA! Now we all know why you went extinct. Damn hippy fish. Probably smoked too much weed that he forgot to evolve all the way. :smoke: :hippie:
