Anyone else notice here at DU you can be arguing passionately with...
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 01:30 PM by NNN0LHI
...another DUer on any given issue (damned near coming to blows) and the very next day you and that same DUer may be agreeing with each other passionately on a completely different issue?

Bet a dollar you have noticed this phenomenon.

2. One evening several months ago
I threw my unwelcomed and unappreciated two cents worth into a rather long thread. I got pounced on like Shark on chum, but ever since I've been the best of allies with those whom I differed with once upon a time. And one person in particular trashed me unmercifully that night but if you read our posts nowadays we are best of buddies.

I don't recall that one about Dogs and Tigers. I was referring to a chat about police shooting a suspect.

3. I seem to recall sticking a pitchfork in your forehead
on a couple of occasions myself.

DU has people from all over the spectrum having every last kind of day too. If you're not willing to forgive and forget and move on, the only one who is "stuck" is the guy (or gal) holding the grudge.

Mostly we're all here because we give a damn and want the world to be a better place for all of us.

If we can remember that from time to time the little sibling rivalries and hair pulling and booger throwing aren't so important.

37. I think that the sibling rivalries, hair pulling and booger throwing
make us stronger. We have to defend our opinions and articulate our arguements. It helps us express ourselves with rational eloquent ideas. Also what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. It even helps me when dealing with the freeps at work. Remember opinions are like assholes. Everyone has at least one.

i'm in a drawn out committee meeting where they aren't even noticing my glaring eyes, and now I know it's the outward and visible sign of my inward scathing hatred.

but you've ruined it, now i'm smiling!

38. Having a bad memory helps..
If someone attacks me, I never take it personally, nor do I "keep score".. and I don't use ignore..

Since I can't always remember who attacked me, it's easy to like everyone :)

completely, or we don't state it precisely enough, or are just wiped out and not on top of our game - and sho nuff, someone slams it right down our throats. And we think, oops, nevermind, and remind ourselves to not shoot from the hip.

Remember the primary wars? Many of us who seemed to hate each other and dismiss even the tiniest idea that the other would bring to the discussion are friends now. I can certainly get angry and forgive, we are all basically on the same side. The others? Well, not so much.

14. Yes, I've noticed that and it's a good thing but I've also noticed........
....the other side of the coin. That during some of those "arguing passionately" sessions some people cross over from attacking the idea to viciously attacking their opponent personally. So sometimes it seems like voicing an opinion at DU is a choice between personal attacks or preaching to the choir. Neither one of those are good. I truly wish every last person at DU would remember that it's ideas we attack here NOT PEOPLE.

16. Yes, that's the very kind of thing I'm talking about................
....I go out of my way to try and make it plain I'm attacking the idea only and in turn the other person makes it personal after that.

I don't seem much difference between what goes on here under the name of "flame wars" or "personal attacks" and what goes on over at that neocon/fundie place people sometimes post links to. :puke:

19. Yeah, pretty crummy ain't it
I mean why get upset, if were just gonna agree on something else the next day? Be better if enemies could stay enemies, that way the ignore list wouldn't need to be changed all the time. Be easier to decide the buddy list too.

Life is too confusing. It's not as black and white as it used to be, with the internet.

Next thing ya know, we'll be swaying arm in arm singing some ridiculous song about the brother/sisterhood of all of mankind.

Makes me long for the 'good' old days, being ignorant and not even caring that I was ignorant.

26. That is exactly why
I've never put anyone on my ignore list.

It's like Will Rogers said, "No, I'm not a member of an organized political party, I'm a Democrat."

We're very rarely in lock-step, but we come together for what's important.

28. Yep. And what's really weird is when...
You find yourself at odds with people that you usually agree with. And it's really weird when they get personal and slap the same label on you and an erstwhile ideological opponent.

I can't remember the exact example, but I've even found myself arguing pretty passionately on one side of an issue and then became convinced that I was wrong and argued the other side the next day. That can happen too.

Generally, I find myself a little to the left of center around here, but at the same time, I am sometimes more impressed by my opponents' arguments than I am by boilerplate, knee-jerk lefty, rhetoric on issues. At times that can make for some odd alliances/opponents when you find yourself arguing against people you mostly agree with because their warrants are just not very good.

All in all it makes things interesting. I like a deliberative discussion and a spirited exchange (so long as there is some degree common ground and it is not a complete waste of time). I've noticed that some people on both sides of the DU spectrum seem to want an echo chamber. Not me.

31. That's because we're not sheeple. We actually think.
One of the reasons why I love the Domocratic Party - we don't all agree on all the issues all the time. The media and the repugs will tell us it's a bad thing we can't all spew the same message. I choose to believe our diversity is what makes us strong.

More, there are people I disagree with on almost everything, that I would enjoy having to my home, to sit around and debate with.

There are others I like a lot, who I sometimes disagree with strongly.

Also, on days that I am cranky, my daughters say, "Must mean rain in the northeast."
