DUer alarcojon Seriously Ill

I'm taking the liberty of posting about a good friend of mine here at DU, who has just been diagnosed with acute leukemia. alarcojon is a remarkable guy--funny, wicked smart, and at times fiercely contentious--he's the most loyal friend and most entertaining golfing buddy you could ask for. He'll require both chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant, according to his doctors. That process is certain to be long and difficult for alarcojon and his family, so I ask all of you who have a spare moment to send your prayers/good wishes/positive energy his way. I'm generally not much of a proponent of magical thinking, but in this case my feeling is that some good DU mojo couldn't hurt.

147. As an AML survivor....3 + years out from transplant

I hope alarcojon journey will be swift, and successful
In June of 2002 I was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myloid Leukemia). After several chemo treatments, and then a stem cell transplant I am happy healthy and living a long life again.
It wasn't always easy, but it is much more likely for a full recovery nowadays then ever before. And with the advancements of stem cell transplants it makes it easier. Stem cell transplants are easier on the patient then bone marrow transplants because they tend to graft quicker and will far fewer side effects.

Thank you again for all the good vibes and positive energy. For all of you who have shown your support in the way you find most natural, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I am feeling entirely too well after a day and change of chemo. Now that I have a real Internet connection, I will be posting on DU as I am able, which should be a fair amount for now. I am prepared for the challenges ahead, but with the help of my family, my real-world community, and my online community, I feel that much stronger and able to face the difficulties day by day. My husband and I have been in the registry for about 15 years now- we joined when our synagogue had a drive for a young woman of Eastern European Jewish ancestry who needed a donor- she sadly died. But we are still in there.
