Here's an oath-taking I'd like to see....
The man or woman taking the oath raises their right hand, places left on the Bible...then thoughtfully removes it.
"In all honesty, I can't swear by the Bible. It has been so twisted, misinterpreted, taken out of context, perverted, and used to promote personal agendas that it no longer carries its original meaning.
I swear by the Earth upon which we stand, the Sun which gives light to us all, the air, water, and sustenance upon which we all live and the blood we all bear to uphold my oath."

May not be 'eternal verities', but they are much less subject to misinterpretation.

1. I could get behind that
except none of those things mean anything to the Republicans either. If it can be exploited it will be.

I do like it though.

2. If I am ever again put in a position where I must swear an oath
I will refuse citing bush, cheney and the attorney general. If they don't have to swear to tell the truth, I don't either.

4. That's true.
One of my former job duties was to serve as an "expert witness" for my employer. I always looked forward to having the delicious opportunity for someone to stick a bible under my nose. It never happened. I was always asked to "affirm".
