1. Who would watch that for 10 minutes?
He must have told them that, yikes!

All I could think of was WHY didn't she run?

Who is hiring all these wonderful people?

4. it's a way to demonize her
If he said this, then he wanted to start this meme: she must have been a slut, who deserved whatever she got, if she remained there for ten minutes. Sounds like a real sweetheart of a guy, no wonder he was hired.

6. We don't know the circumstances here.
This could be anything from extenuating circumstances to manipulation by the accused predator, to shift blame to the victim.

A man came out from behind a convenience store as I was getting into my car to leave. He exposed himself to me and I just started my car, backed up and drove away.

29. grew up on the central florida coast
i can remember many times men would drive up to ask directions or whatnot and have no pants on. there was a dirty old man down the street who had a problem with his shorts everytime he was out in the yard. everyone knew about it. there was a public beach on military property (outside of munipal jurisdiction) that was a "cruising" spot for OLD timers. i kid you not. the old men with metal detectors.

i think it has to do with the military/adult entertainment complex in florida. if there's a base, there's "shore leave" attitude that's basically predatory and sociopathic. kids know a LOT more about this shit than adults can prolly deal with. bleh.

76. My roommate and I were driving down Interstate 5 once
and she always drove like a bat out of hell. We were in the middle lane and this pickup pulled up beside us, going the same speed. I glanced over, and he was staring at us, his wanker in his hand, and was pounding it furiously. I was so in shock I didn't look away right away, but told my roommate to look. She started laughing, albeit uncomfortabley, I joined her, we slowed down. He slowed down. We sped up, he sped up. How he could yank his pud and still control his vehicle is beyond me. We didn't have cell phones back then, but we wrote down his license plate number and called the police when we got to our apartment. I don't know how anyone could possibly think that pulling your pud in public could ever be a turn on!

Part of the Perverted-Justice website is dedicated to these "wankers". I think it's hilarious that they post these guys pictures, profiles and text. http://www.perverted-justice.com/wankers/

77. You know, at the time, I was pretty appalled, but I've always
had this way of, well, I guess it's some kind of look I give people that sort of stops them dead in their tracks. I don't really do it on purpose; it's just part of my personality, I guess.

The thing is, though, as with all things sexual, it's something I would probably talk to my sons and daughters about at a young age. I'd try to do it in a way that wasn't scary, but this week with all the examples of things that can happen, well, I just don't think I'd send a kid out into the world without having a lot of conversations about this sort of thing. And I'd ask them what they would do in a situation like that.

The Duke thing - I'd be pretty honest with a daughter about what could happen at parties like that and with a son - I'd probably ask him to think about what he would do if he found himself in a sitauation where the guys around him were getting out of control like that. I don't think anyone really prepares kids for what they are going to face when they get to college.

79. I really think that someone should write a good honest
book about how to deal with going to college, and what can happen there.. so many kids have NO IDEA how screwy it can get and FAST, or how to extricate themselves.. need a writer that isn't pompous or smug, or too glib, but honest..

My sister was/is a Christian, and a nice person, but was clueless as to sex drives in kids.. too my little niece to church every week, lived a good god fearing life, but as soon as my little niece shows up at college (and she's a cutie pie) BAM, knocked up by the head of the Hockey team, a huge black guy with no scruples whatsoever,(not saying that about all black or hockey players of course), she had to meet this idiot rapist jock, having never seen anyone so wild she went too.. (he'd gone, but heard he'd grown up enough to enjoy his daughter now)..

Telling kids not to screw is like telling them not to BREATHE, the repigs are NUTS when it comes to this.. they should have a FREE box of condoms on every door at the Universities, "Take all you want, we'll keep the box filled"..

It's always been a jolt, but now it's more dangerous as I see it, especially now that they say more kids are conservatives :)

Some of these conservatives are among the most perverted people I've ever seen, the liberals are MELLOW and know that NO means NO, not HO..

I've always been honest, tho I hated it, with my little boys, told them that there are people out there who WILL steal you, bury you up to your neck under a trailor and use your mouth as a toilet and ashtray (not when they're TOO young), and then taught them about CODEWORDS that families use to make sure someone is safe, don't follow some guy looking for a puppy in the woods, and how to turn their arms into NOODLES (all loose), so that if someone grabbed their jackets they can RUN OUT OF THEM, and run away.. when in a mall go to a middle aged woman for HELP if someone is bothering them.. all that good stuff..

Almost sounds like the same rules apply to college, eh? :)

Good post, thanks!

Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 02:43 PM by Iris
I was an advisor for a local chapter of my sorority and got this

http://bernicesandler.com/id50.htm

in hard copy somewhere. I found it when I was looking online in regard to this topic and it looks like the authors are trying to put the info. online. I recognized a lot of it from the book I had. I still have the book somehwere - intended more or less to show any kids I have (or love - nieces, nephews) before they go off to college.

28. She "glanced once". . .was shocked and sat & thought what she should do.
When something like this happens, what SHOULD she have done? If she had immediately walked away, would this incident end up having been reported? We really don't know the precise time line - did someone else see him and report him? Why was he running? Did he see the girl go to someone else and point at him? Did another bystander say something?

When I was 16, and visiting an uncle's ranch, we had lunch every day with my aunt, uncle, cousins and the ranch foreman and his wife. One afternoon my uncle told the foreman to drive me in his truck up to a distant pasture where the foreman was to then drive some piece of farm equipment back, and I was to drive the truck back.

When we got to our destination, he reached across the front seat and grabbed me. I instinctively fought him off but was too shocked to say anything. After a bit he realized I wasn't going to cooperate and just stopped and got out of the truck. I never said a word about it to anyone. My aunt would have gone into hyterics and god knows what the man's wife would have done. He'd worked for my uncle for many years - they were friends. Would the man have denied it? So I can understand this girl just sitting there. This happened back in 1958 and it's the first time I've told the tale. And for what it's worth, it happened in Kansas!

Here's the girl's quote:

In her statement, the girl said Figueroa pulled up a leg of his shorts, exposed himself and masturbated for about 10 minutes. "I glanced once because he seemed very strange, and I caught a look of his penis," she said. "I was shocked, so I sat and thought of what I should do."

Figueroa's attorney has been granted a postponement of the trial to give him time to depose the girl. If he is not removed from his job before August, the suspended agent will become eligible for retirement then when he reaches the age of 50." (end of quote)

And I'd like to point out that there is no provision in the law that such actions are not crimes if the victim doesn't act in a certain way.

42. Thanks
I heard that tonight. I posted in a rush and left town for the evening. I was trying to be "cute" with that statement and it did not come across that way. For that I am sorry. I would never blame the victim for something like this, ever. Wish I had been here to stop that before now but oh well. I wasn't cute and there is nothing what so ever funny about this. It sounded odd when I read the post, now I know the answer.

I too have had similar things happen and I am sorry for what happened to you. I doubt there are too many women who have managed to grow up without something similar to the situation this girl went through or something as horrible as what you went through. I can imagine it took her a while to decide what to do.

21. Under the radar?
Unfortunately, things like this kind of sex-crime will get swept under the rug until the sensationalism sings at a pitch to keep the source from being lambasted for saying something so dreadful to hear. We have all heard the talking point about not hearing good news from Iraq. This is the same sort of thing that forces us to go to alternative news sources to find out the latest about what is going on in Darfur. It is too shocking and horrible for our consumption according to the gate-keepers of our news.

Makes you wonder just how bad the person is who got the job next

No wonder they want Google's records - they're afraid of what the records will expose about those in government who prey on children.

Edit to add: I wonder, did the FBI have a child predator investigating unit that transfered to the DHS or is this unit completely 'new'? Reason I wonder is if this unit is really all about making excusses for government oversight of the 'internets' because of all the 'predators' surfing the net.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. They're interested in prosecuting OTHER people for recreational drug use and sexual peccadilloes---what better way than to hide that you're a cokesnorting pervert than under a cross or a government ID or other such goodguy badges? You see this in the priest scandal, and in the many many stories of such behavior in the SS. Nice gig for a pervert, fighting perverts. You get to take their collections AND move yourself by nature into a category that clearly :sarcasm: doesn't contain such subhumans--why, you can't be a molestor, you CHASE them for a living!

TAMPA - The arrest of a former immigration chief based in Tampa has prompted the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a national review of background checks conducted on employees who target child exploitation.

A former inspector general with Homeland Security says the Tampa case reveals flaws in the department's background-check procedures.

3rd DHS Employee a Child Sex Criminal?
By Justin Rood - April 5, 2006, 5:01 PM

(...)

For a Dateline NBC segment on sex predators, Southern California police set up a sting: A decoy pretended to be a 12- or 13-year old online at home, alone. Sex predators found the decoy on the Internet and arranged to meet. When they showed up, the police arrested them.

Caught in the net was Michael Burks, 30, a former La Verne, Calif. police officer who was a DHS "agent," according to a Jan. 14 Los Angeles Times article (not online).

Guards Say Homeland Security Headquarters Insecure

Updated: 8:05 a.m. ET March 6, 2006

WASHINGTON - The agency entrusted with protecting the U.S. homeland is having difficulty safeguarding its own headquarters, say private security guards at the complex.

The guards have taken their concerns to Congress, describing inadequate training, failed security tests and slow or confused reactions to bomb and biological threats.

(snip)

"If the allegations brought forward by the whistleblowers are correct, they represent both a security threat and a waste of taxpayer dollars," Democratic Sens. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota and Ron Wyden of Oregon wrote. "It would be ironic, to say the least, if DHS were unable to secure its own headquarters."

Read near the end about the suspicious bag in the DHS headquarters parking lot.....

68. stupid DHS also spread news re: location when they chose this bldg before
it even had this much security in place. I consider that idiotic, especially since the streets surrounding the DHS bldg. get a lot of traffic and there are multi-story apt. buildings all around. There are other places nearby that LOTS of people frequent, too, but I don't want to identify the building.

Suffice it to say I know the area well because my mother lives in an apt. next door to DHS. I have always noticed the lax security there.

Not that DHS cares!!! Grrr. :puke:

thing he's got going.. I'm sorry, but i actually started wondering if anyone is investigating to make sure Delay isn't running a child pornography ring with his orphanage operation. I know it isn't fair of me... but every time i see him on the tube or listen to him speaking i think of a sleazy child molester. that's what i think of when i see him.

When something that is utterly outside of your experience happens, the usual result is kind of a frozen shock. I had exactly the same reaction the first time a teacher was blatantly and completely non-justifiably abusive and mean to me. I was just, stricken. You have no experience to base an action on, no fucking clue what to do, you're just kind of floored that the world contains this.

Nobody has ever told you the proper way to handle this, because it's hardly something that most people would expect their daughter to encounter in daily life. And how embarassing would it be to go up to a mallpig (probably male) as a very young girl and say that some man was jerking off, uh, at you? Would he even believe you? Tons of authority figures think all teenagers are lying, thieving, lazy, etc...sixteen year old mall rat versus DHS employee, with a blue-collar mostly powerless security dude arbitrating? Massacre.

EDIT: Disbelief, is the word I was looking for through all this and not finding. She's sitting in a food court! I can imagine looking around to see if anyone else notices this (guessing no one did) and fearing you were misunderstanding....and just being so embarassed you don't know WHAT to do.

57. It happened in the food court
That's what I heard on ... I think Olbermann? So to leave, she'd have to leave her meal behind. There are usually a lot of people in the food courts. Maybe she felt safer there than leaving only to have him follow her! Perhaps he was partially hidden by the table and really didn't expect anyone would see. At any rate, I don't blame her at all. It's a shocking thing, especially to a young girl.

As for him being hired to catch predators... I guess Repubs think it takes one to know one. I can hear the spin now: very well-qualified, specialized intimate knowledge of what they're after, he truly believed in his heart it was OK, blah blah.

If this is how dude gets his jollies... what do we think he was doing (on our dime) when underlings brought 'evidence' of potential crimes to him? Creepy, creepy.

And echoing the TPM site - do these people do any qualifications checks on the folks they hire - or is it all about giving some crony a campaign contribution?
