The article says Cynthia poked the cop with her cell phone. Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but unless her cell phone had a knife on the end of it, I don't see how the cop could have been hurt in any way.

Perhaps it was an accident. The article said she was in a hurry to get to a meeting, and like the typical busy person, she likely had her hands full. Cell phone, sunglasses, briefcase, purse, etc. Maybe it was just an accident that the cop got poked. If he grabbed her and pulled her around, who knows what could get in the way.

I just think this whole thing is intentionally being blown out of proportion, both parties should have said "I'm sorry" right there on the spot and walked away.

While simple assault (shoving someone) is a misdemeanor, assaulting a police officer is a felony. Usually when this happens a prosecutor will simply downgrade the charge to simple assault where the officer suffers no injuries. However, due to the political nature of this case the prosecutor probably wants to let the grand jury do it (reduce the charges) so he won't be subjected to personal criticism. Before everyone gets all excited, the odds are about 8 gazillion to 1 for indictment.
