1. No thanks
We'll be happy with paper ballots and optical scanners. Computers that print the ballots would also be welcome, as they would allow for multiple languages and access for the disabled.

Right now, NYC has mechanical machines that fail just like DREs - no paper trails here. We're losing for progress, not Luddite thinking.

9. Because I live in a city where minorities will soon be the
majority - and they don't all speak proficient English. Dr Rebecca Mercuri endorses the idea - what are your legitimate objections?

4. why not have a ballot where you mark your choice with a pencil?
low-tech but nearly foolproof. In fact it's really hard to spoil your ballot, I spoiled my ballot paper a couple of elections back here in the UK (rather than endorse Blair) it wasn't easy.

It's quick and most constituencies report results within hours of the polling stations closing. One or two places have to wait until the next day.

7. Because I lived in Palm Beach County
And Gore didn't lose because of DREs ... thousands of ballots were spoiled by folks like my mom's friends who admitted to me that honestly didn't know if they followed the directions properly. Then I did some research and learned that it doesn't take a confusing ballot to produce a consistent over and undervote spoilage in every election.

So I'll stick with the advice offered by VerifiedVoting.org and suggest you do the same.

8. sure... so long as the paper ballot/printout is the ballot on record - we
need audits outside the margin of error too.

11. Yup, you got a paper trail
and can recount reliably - even manually, if circumstances require.

5. VIDEOTAPED hand counts
And nothing that isn't on the tape counts towards the total.

And both parties of the house of representatives must agree on the videotape count.

6. But I thought...
(like most of us here in PA) that computerized voting machines with proprietary software were as foolproof as could be! Everybody at the board of elections is down with that! :sarcasm:

KNR

10. i dunno...
Call me a party pooper, but seeing the old ladies who work the polls makes me rethink hand counting everything and relying solely on it.

I always get $40 from the ATM when i ask for it (even though they sometimes take $42).
I always pay $5 at the automatic parking garage...

We're so careful with our automated money procedures, and would NEVER EVER stand for it being fucked up, but when it's a vote why accept laissez faire technology? There's just some kind of rational disconnect in those who won't support open and accountable voting systems.
