Thank you, Cynthia
Hey, remember a few years back when I was standing in a crowd in D.C., it was around October 2002. There was this big rally going on, one of this little anti-war things where 500,000 poeple don't show up. You remember that, right? I was standing there, amoung dozens of other DUers, and thousands and thousands of people, and we were all there for the same reason. Then one of your bodyguards came barrelling through from behind and shoved me to the side, and you followed them. Remember that?

Is that considered shoving? Was I shoved? Grabbed? Why were my rights pissed on in order to make room for you?

But I didn't make a stink about it, you were on my side. You were the only one in Congress making a stink about 9/11.

Now, you're the only one making a stink out of not wearing your tag.

Thank you for throwing the right-wing a meaty, juicy, succulent bone.

You've really moved up.

Come on - this incident just further alienates the gop from African-Americans and is red meat to the mad as hell right - only hurts dems in that it changes the subject a little

6. My feelings:
We have so many here that have been so ingrained to accept authority without question and damn those who dare question a cop or other authority figure.

Gotta keep them darkies (read: anyone who tilts at authority) in line!

I hate to break it to some of you, but cops are people too. They make mistakes, they over-react, they cover their asses and the asses of their workmates. They're in a rough job with lots of pressures and are in a position where their actions are (and should be) up to closer inspection than the rest of us. They chose the job, they should live with it.

However, that should not give them a ticket to actions without question.

Ms. McKinney's actions have now been damned by people on both sides of the aisle. It's safe. She's from a small Dem bastion in a largely Republican state. There can't be too much blowback, right?

I'm close to Cynthia's age, I got to march with Hosea Williams once in Cartersville and feel the sting of a stone on my shoulder by people who felt that the old ways were the best ways. I still have a chip on my shoulder from that rock and I am sure Cynthia does as well.

It's an important and unforgiving chip.

For those of you who didn't live through those years, the decision to err on the side of authority is simple. Dirty Harry taught you that. For those of us who did... We felt the pain, we did the time, we got the beatings in the Muscogee County Correction Camp and all the other little jails throughout the South where Redneck Sheriffs liked to emphasize their political beliefs.

Why did Cynthia hit back when a white man grabbed her as she endeavored to do her job?

Memories.

Peace.

For God's sake, peace.

"We have so many here that have been so ingrained to accept authority without question and damn those who dare question a cop or other authority figure.

Yeah, that's the difference between so many here and you. That's exactly why we want this issue to go away. It has nothing to do with the reasons we've given, like how it is a no-win issue for us that is distracting attention from more serious, more newsworthy matters. That's just us rationalizing, but you've got us all figured out.

What color is the sky on Planet Smug?

If not, that's probably why. She's a black, woman Congressperson, as she's pointed out. Lookie, no touchie.

Would you say you were touched "inappropriately"? I'm still trying to figure out what she means by that. In my world, that would mean the cop tweaked her magguppie to get her to stop, but that doesn't seem likely. Just think, if you woulda biffed her one, you could have claimed "self-defense" just like her.

25. I'm sorry DU
But I cannot support Congresswomen McKinney on what's she doing. First off saying the reason why CP stopped her because she's black is outrageous. First off CP dosen't know what all the Senators and Reps look like THERE'S 535 OF THEM FOR CHRIST SAKE and that's not counting aides, clerks etc. There was no need to punch the CP officer for stopping her and grabbing her, they were just doing there job, for all we know he thought she was a terrorist or something. There was nothing racial going on here, all the CP officer wanted was some i.d cause Cindy wasn't wearing her congressional pin and she takes offense and eventually punches him.

I watched Tom DeLay on Hannity and Colmes tonight and I must say I hate DeLay and I wish he dies but I must agree with what he said tonight saying that McKinney is a racists and she has always played the race card and the symphony card.

Sorry but McKinney had to right to punch a CP officer, these people are more than tourist attractions, there actually real police who's job is to protect the people that enter and work in the building and punching one of them isn't the right thing.

I thought it was funny when they had her lawyer on and he said and I quote: "Tom Delay is nothing but i spoiled white boy." Boy that's real professional.

31. I have to disagree
I understand where you're coming from, but if you have an issue with authority, you should deal with it appropriately. You don't slap an officer when arrested, just like you expect Tom Delay to not slap a Sherriff when he's served with a court order.

If we all took Cynthia's approach, we'd dissolve into anarchy, and who wants that? If she felt abused, or picked out, she should have gone with it, and taken it up through the appropriate channels, and YOU CAN BET THAT PERSON WOULD'VE BEEN FIRED if wrong doing was found.

My beef is with the Capitol security.
Regardless of whether or not she was wearing the pin---and if the pins don't have names and photogs----then it seems like any old fool could just walk right in.

But they should know names and faces also.
What if Ms. McKinney had an assassination attempt against her and these people don't know what she looks like?!?!?!?! How the hell are they going to protect her then???

38. You could spend 1 million dollars in the private market
and have every single congressional building in DC hooked up to a centralized database security system with failover capability, that used hand-prints, fingerprint, retinal-scans or a combination of the above PLUS a scale underneath them to make sure they weren't carrying lots of sudden extra weight.

But no, nobody wants to do that.

42. that's exactly my point
it took 30 minutes for me to get an ID card made for me, which matched my hand-print in a little box where I had to place my hand against some prongs which went between specific fingers.

now i can waltz in there in less than 5 seconds. if someone has my card, they can't. if i don't have my card, i can't. if someone has my card and my dead hand, they can't (can't talk about why), if someone has my card, and me with my hand still attached, i can initiate a duress signal without them knowing.

this is all over an internet provider. you think our Dept of Homeland Security could do any better? I do.
