It is true that no one knows the full extent of what actually happened, but NONE of the possible scenarios rises to the standard of charging anyone with a crime.

We know for example that the officer did in fact make physical contact with her first, in fact people on both sides have used the word "grabbed". Ms McKinney offered at best token resistance to this; "poking" the officer is the word I've heard used most often, and by the police. If someone unexpectedly grabbed my arm I can assure you they would get at least poked for their trouble. When a stranger restrains you physically your first reaction is NOT to politely ask if they are a police officer. Your initial reaction is fear, and then self-preservation sets in. You free yourself if possible and evaluate the situation. Nothing Ms McKinney is accused of, by the most strident of her accusers, goes past that simple reaction.

It all sounds like a stupid misunderstanding that should have been followed by apologies all round and everyone goes on with their lives. I have no idea what instigated the initial confrontation but this pursuit of criminal charges over such a thing is just absurd.

When I'm responded to in a civil manner I always respond back with the same respect. And I very rarely will be the one initiating the provocation. But you're going to have to deal with the fact that not everybody here feels the same way you do, or will agree all the time on every issue. I believe what she did was wrong, and I believe that defending her in this situation just for the sake of her being an outspoken democrat that has made us quite proud, is not something that makes us look rational. People can be heroes and still make mistakes. They can be heroes and still own up to those mistakes. I think it does our side much justice to be able to admit mistakes our heroes make and call them out on them, which is something the repubs are incapable of doing. I believe firmly that judging this situation objectively is important and a testament to our ability to judge things fairly. She is a stand up congresswoman and a hero to many, but one that just made a mistake. There is nothing wrong with admitting that or believing that, and I in fact find honor in it.

So no, you cannot stifle me for being a liberal who is not a hypocrite and who actually abides by his words when saying that the rule of law should be followed. If I'm going to tout that to the couple hundred corrupt ass republicans in congress that have shunned the law, then I best be able to be willing to do it for just one of ours. I have served as a Member of Congress for more than 11 years.

Throughout my tenure in Congress, I seem to evoke memory loss, especially from certain police officers who claim not to be able to recognize my face while I go to work everyday, representing the people of Georgia's 4th Congressional District.

Washington, DC and local newspapers, as well as authors of books, have carried my "working while black" stories of such encounters on Capitol Hill. In fact, the movie American Blackout candidly captures just such an encounter in one of its more humorous moments when after a two-year hiatus from Congress, a black police officer recognizes me and welcomes me back to Washington, and then just across the street, a few yards away, a white police officer approaches me to ask me what office I am with. In the film I remark, "Some things never change. That's what Tupac said."

Sadly, there are only 14 black women Members of Congress. And surely our faces are distinguishable. But why my face is continually unrecognizable can only be answered by these offending police officers. Capitol Hill Police are given face recognition instructions as a part of their official training. Capitol Hill Police are required to recognize, greet, and distinguish Members of Congress as a part of their official role and responsibilities. In fact, according to the US Capitol Police, their mission is to protect and support the Congress in meeting its Constitutional responsibilities. The US Capitol Police mission statement makes no distinction about selective application of its mission depending upon whether a Member of Congress is black, woman, or has a new hairstyle.

But, honestly, this incident is not about wearing a Congressional pin or changing my hairstyle.

HOWEVER, to accuse those of us who want to use facts, reason, respect and information to learn what actually happened, of "groupthink" or of demanding that we "blindly support her just because she's a Democrat" is TOTALLY missing the point.

I was making a personal observation (the 'enemy' in my comment being repugs; that she was set up by them as inferred by another post I'd read here) and commented that I didn't have enough information to enthusiastically support McKinney as I see others doing. I did use the word "if" - "if she struck the officer", which to my satisfaction had not been made clear.

Since I wrote my post, McKinney has publicly apologized, which I felt she should have done from the beginning in order to keep the incident from blowing up as it did. Everyone is accountable for their actions, regardless of political party or color of skin.

People can be reactionary on all sides of an issue.
