Poppy Bush is coming to my town tomorrow to dedicate a new building
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 08:44 AM by CottonBear
named after a dead Republican senator from Georgia, Paul Coverdell.

As a reminder, when Coverdell died suddenly our former Democratic Governer, Roy Barnes, appointed (Democrati) Zell Miller to fill the position. :( That worked out really well for us. :sarcasm:

The event is free and open to the public! His speech will take place outdoors and the event begins at 2 PM at the UGA Vet School plaza across from the Coverdell Center on D.W. Brooks Drive on the UGA campus (Athens, GA).

I feel sorry for all of the UGA students, staff and faculty who will suffer becaue of the road closures and parking restrictions.

At least Poppy's not bringing Bar along. :puke:

I wonder if there will be any protesters? I'm sure our GOP Governer, Sonny Perdue (Yes, our governer is named Sonny.) and our two hideous Senators, Saxby "Sack o' Shit" Chambliss (Remember the guy who smeared Max Cleland?) and Johnny Boy Isakson ("There are no people in Georgia who want to do the jobs that illegals are doing"), will show up.

I wonder how Poppy Bush will be received in one of the bluest and most progressive cities in all of Georgia?

1. Why bother to protest Poppy?
He's got nothing to do with W. or his policies. I don't know what you would have on your placard besides "We realize you are ashamed of your son." He's not going to do that, so....

3. I wasn't planning on protesting Poppy or even going since I'll be at work.
I am ashamed of his son, that's for sure. I'm especially ashamed of my senators and governor.

I'm sort of pissed off that Coverdell had to go and die suddenly. That's how we got Zell Miller as our senator. :(

Everytime I go past the new Coverdell building I think of Zell, our Diebold 2002 elections and how Chambliss swiftboated Max Cleland. :(

5. His pardon of the Iran/contra figures?
Sure, it was a long time ago, in the dead of night on Christmas Eve when he was a lame duck, but he stopped the trial of the men who would have implicated him in the Reagan administration's crimes in Central America.

There are a lot of dead people buried in unmarked graves in Central America thanks to Poppy and his henchmen. That seems a good enough reason to protest the old spook to me.

6. I guess.
It just seems like it shrinks compared to his kid's crimes, which he isn't sharing in.

7. I would submit
Poppy's self-exoneration left the black heart of Republican corruption beating. After a brief interregnum, it returned more virulent than ever to spawn the even more corrupt reign of error of Bush II. Sure, Poppy may admit privately to his cronies that he doesn't much care for his son's crimes, but he still cashes those Carlyle Group checks, fails to speak out publicly, and by his public silence implies approval and he knows it.

That's sharing enough in my book.

2. He isn't a part of W.'s inner circle
As someone posted a while back in regards to why Sr. was spending so much time with Clinton, "He was like the son, Bush never had."

4. Yep, for "family values Republicans", they don't seem very close.
I get the feeling that Poppy really doesn't like Goerge very much at all.

At least with Bill, Poppy can have an intelligent conversation.
