(sigh) America could be eradicating world poverty for CHEAP!
Only $130 billion/year.

What's that? The cost of Iraq in a month?

Sheesh. If only the electorate wanted politicians with sincere humanitarian goals....

And just think - people wouldn't NEED to be terrorist so much if they weren't as hopelessly poor!

1. Yeah, but eradicated for how long?
$130B probably wouldn't do it forever.

3. long enough to get population growth under control
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 10:44 AM by maxsolomon
long enough to eliminate multiple easily preventable third world diseases.
long enough to conduct a 'soft war' on religious extremism by removing its root cause: poverty.

7. I doubt it.

That $130B probably needs to be paid indefinitely.

10. Excuse me?
Even if other countries refused to up their foreign aide in response to an America-led poverty-eradication campaign, it only would have cost about $130 billion a year.

$130B a year for how long? Do you see a timetable?

I beg your epic assistance, kind sir.

11. Wow - you don't even read what YOU write...
I clearly said, initially, $130 billion/year.

You then said "that's probably each month" (might not be a quote, but is close enough for the point here)

Sheesh.

Rock on with your hatin and makin shit up directly contrary to what's being reported.

EDIT: oooooo - you edited the silliness away. Well, I didn't screencap it, so I guess you win. Congrats!

5. $130 billion a year
Less than one-third what we spend on defense every year. And if folks south of the border could work a living wage job at home, and enjoy the benefits of a free society instead of being under the thumb of large multinational corporations, do you think they'd risk death crossing the desert into the United States?

Strangely enough, for all the new-found interest the Republicans have ginned up over "illegal" immigration, that solution seems to be totally off the table as the GOP fights over the finer points of incarceration vs. execution for these persons.

6. Yep, the most dangerous people are those with nothing to lose.
As the country with the most wealth (before this administration, at least), you'd think we'd see this as a smart and affordable investment.

9. What, and have no economy?
The economy needs poor people. If we didn't have poverty, we might not waste our lives in a cubicle. If we didn't have poverty, we might choose not to have to work our entire lives just so that we can pay to live, and get to "enjoy" those last few years.

Our global economy needs those deperate enough to work for pennies a day. It needs those 4 year old girls making our shoes. It needs exploitation.

If it didn't feed off of that...well, you don't want to know what kind of life humans might be able to live.
