1000 bodies, mostly Kurds found buried near Kirkuk
About 1000 bodies have been discovered in 8 seperate mass graves in and around the Kurdish city of Kirkuk. Some of the bodies are Shiite and Turkomen, but the overwhelming majority are Kurds. Observers say this was Saddam gassing Kurds in 1991.

5. I will never forget bush1 being interviewed.....
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 01:27 PM by nomaco-10
on a golf course after he encouraged the Kurds and Shia to revolt after the 1st gulf war, and was informed of the gassings and murders, "I don't want to get involved in a civil war".
It seems neither bush's thinks much of civil war, they just choose to ignore the ones they started. The nut doesn't fall too far from the tree.

4. This probably happened around the time that the Kurds got
driven out of their homes in Kirkuk, when there was additional oil field development up that way. After the US military reached Baghdad, the Kurds wasted no time coming down the hill and booting those bastards off their land and repossessing their homes and farms. The Turks are freaking out, because the Kurds want the revenue from those fields, and money means clout and a real shot at nationhood should Iraq go totally wobbly...it could get tricky as time goes by.

6. Circa 1988?
~snip~

One still cannot tune into a discussion of Iraq without a neo-con bringing up The Gassing of His Own People as a reason to go to war. Yes, it was a terrible thing. I remember the photographs of the bloated bodies of mothers, their arms still wrapped around their dead children. This happened in 1988. So why didn't the United States react then?

And, more to the point, what actually happened, and how did the U.S. respond at the time?

~snip~

Shortly after the massacre at Halabja, Senators Claiborne Pell, Al Gore, and Jesse Helms introduced legislation to impose sanctions on Iraq for its use of chemical weapons. The Prevention of Genocide Act of 1988 unanimously passed the US Senate just one day after being introduced.

So what did the Reagan Administration do? Reagan vetoed this Act, of course. Conventional Wisdom says that he did this because in those days Iran was the Bad Guy, and anyone who was an enemy of Iran was on Our Side.
