Time Sensitive: Israel does NOT want US to attack Iran!
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 01:49 PM by IndyOp
On Edit: Mods - this post belongs in GD because it is about US attack on Iran and Israel's position about the possibility.

Do you have time to write an LTTE or call/write/fax Congress? Please.

According to a well-placed source (sorry, no can reveal) plans for US attack on Iran are nearing completion. Now is the time to avert war with Iran.

This MUST get into the media: Israel will be endangered by an attack on Iran. Israel says there are many options left to diffuse this situation. Do NOT attack Iran!

Steve Clemon's (Washington Note) just returned from Israel where he expected to find people who supported the growing numbers in the US who are calling for an attack on Iran (whether that be by bombing one or more locations or with a larger assault).

He did NOT find anyone - not Likkud, not Mossad - NO ONE in Israel who thought that there is a need to attack Iran.

The American Jewish Committee just took out a full page ad in the New York Times advocating that the U.S. attack Iran. But there is a gap - a serious gap - between senior defense operatives, intellectuals and political personalities in Israel and the leading voices in the Jewish diaspora (primarily in the US).

5. Right now, the theocrats are using Israel as an excuse
to bomb Iran -- we have a chance to take away their excuse for making war.

An attack on Iran - even 'surgical strikes' - is estimated to kill up to 10,000 people.

Do you give a shit about 10,000 human lives?

:(

4. Why should we let Israel stand in the way of Bush's Apocalypse?
Israel didn't want us attacking Iraq, either. But we did it anyway.

6. Sounds to me like an effort to:
A) Distance Israel from any US attacks on Iran -- and the likely disastrous results of those attacks. (As though this would be "bought into" by any but the most gullible -- and predisposed.)

B) Put pressure on China and Russia to go along with sanctions on Iran. And my guess is that these sanctions would include ending any assistance to Iran with their nuclear power program (effectively ending it). (Then if the Iranians continue on with their enrichment activities, these activities could easily be portrayed as being for weapons use.)

I ain't buying it.

9. It is possible that Clemons was fed information
for 'public consumption' while behind the scenes, the Israeli hawks are working with the * to prepare for attacks. Absolutely possible.

Still -- the usefulness of Clemons report for our purposes -- counteracting * claims that attacking Iran will make Israel safer is real and we should publicize what Clemons has to say.

12. At best, this is a two-edged sword.

And in the minds of those who will be launching reprisals, a few words now are not likely to overcome the effects of many previous words that run counter to this new message -- and that reinforce the predispositions of those who will feel (or feign being) aggrieved by any such attack (that is, to see Israel behind American policies in the ME).

However, I would make the argument that a US attack on Iran is not in Israel's interests. But I would also make the much broader argument that further American militarism is not the answer to much of anything, since our militarism to-date has been ineffective -- except in stirring up opposition, extremism, fundamentalism, reactive militarism, terror, etc -- and in incurring great costs to our nation.
