Lets not WAIT for Impeachment. Lets throw them out now.
I think we should all get in our cars, get on trains, rent busses, go to DC, and exercise our rights to Petition the Government for Redress and peacefully occupy the entire city and keep anything from happening there until the whole Bush Administration resigns. The whole fucking thing. Top to bottom.

90. I LOVE that song!! I listened to it repeatedly before heading
to DC in Jan '05 (for the counter-inaugural) and last Sept. for the Stop the War march!! There is something very motivating about it, and I always have to remind people that he's not advocating violence, only civil disobedience!
BTW, how's the $17.76 campaign? I still haven't heard from Pamela. Do you know anyone in the DC area?

A million+ sincere and hopefully orderly citizens showing up to glare at them (peacefully) is not an insurrection.
They would think long and hard about Kent State and Tianenmon Square before they used force against a peaceful gathering. I think they'd try to just wait us out.

FYI, Washington DC is considered federal property and is the only part of the United States where the Posse Comitatus Act does not apply. At the first sign of "insurrection" in DC, the pResident is legally permitted to call in the military and forcibly evict you from the area. The last time a large group actually tried to stage any kind of rebellion or large scale shutdown in DC, a bunch of people ended up dead (tragically, mostly children and babies who were overcome by tear gas).

Bush is a far more evil person than Hoover, so I wouldn't expect anything different.

Aside from the obvious threat to life and limb (and * has a notoriously short temper), there's another question to be asked...does this actually have a chance at accomplishing anything?

Lock down DC, and * will be on a chopper out of the city before you jump the fence and make it halfway across the Rose Garden. Once out of there, he can still run the country from Air Force One or any number of military installations and bunker sites. Congress as well has a handful of alternate sites they can meet at.

My worry is that * would use something like this as a pretense to declare martial law.

84. Scwartzenegger had tanks in side streets last year during LA Peace March!!
I can readily imagine * circling the WH w/ tanks & opening fire....Helicopters overhead w/ missles, ear piercing new weapons they are v. proud about. We would have to be ready to die for liberty like Patrick Henry.

Another idea is for NO ONE to pay their income taxes on April 15th. Boycotts work-esp. when big $$$ is involved. Why should we support the corporate/gov't evil??

OR-everyone stay HOME for 2-3 weeks. No work, or purchases or trades of any kind. Go to your keyboards & stay resolute. Hands in pockets. This also would work and would perhaps only require 15-20 million irate Americans who have lost key liberties-jobs outsourced-relatives dying in illegal, immoral wars-our planet being destroyed-dollar collapsing in trillions of dollars of all time record debt. Social Security Fund is rumoured to be emptied--etc.etc.etc.

Any more ideas...hopefully we can remove these mass murderers BEFORE they strike again & it may then be too late!!

and, of course, since there is no way to verify votes, there is not a damn thing we can do about it....

except all go to washington, en masse, and do what we should have already done.

except now, with the media shouting that we are trying to OVERTURN the election, we will get great traction.

THEN the media will show the most hair-brained amongst us demonstrators, as proof that we are nothing but a bunch of freakish america haters.

First I refer you to the OP:

"Peacefully" occupying the city and keeping anything from happening is not what the Constitution is referring to as "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Principally because it's not actually an example of being peaceful. That is a description of nonviolent resistance. Now I certainly don't disagree with nonviolent resistance. It's a valuable tool and there are certainly times it's appropriate. But it needs to happen only when the system has been shown not to work.

While you're reading the Constitution, you might wanna pick up some Gandhi, King, or Thoreau and see what the threshhold is for resisting the system from without. It's not while the system is still in process. To go storming into Washington now to shut down the city as the OP suggests, now just when the lawful prosecution of the administration is starting to kick into gear, is self defeating. In effect, it would be little more than an impudent temper tantrum. A tantrum kind of like the childish suggestion that someone hasn't read the Constitition just because you disagree with them.

But worse than being an anti-social insurrection at a time when the legal proceedings are working for our side and in our favor, and at a time when the non-anti-social public is starting to turn decisively toward our party, calling for a governmental shut down is crappy marketing. It will turn off swing voters and discourage new voters. And it might even give the administration an excuse to crack down on dissidents and whip reluctant moderates back into his column.

You may believe a proposal for a massive shut down of the federal government is "the very essence of Constitutionality." But it's still the essense of a dumb idea.

Next, I refer you to my post, which you pronounced as "bullshit." Perhaps you didn't understand what my title line meant when I wrote "Go to Washington? Yes." I'll try to simplify it for you. That means, yes, do go to Washington. Perhaps you didn't understand that by "go to Washington" I am favoring peaceably assembling to petitition the government. But if you think this thru carefully, I'm sure you'll see that that's exactly what it means.

What I suspect got you to dismiss my post as bullshit, however, is my comment "Coup? No." But if you think that is bullshit, then you might want to look up what the phrase "peaceably to assemble" means. A demonstration against a corrupt party controlling our government is peaceful. That's what we should do. But even a nonviolent insurrection is not protected by the Constitution.

I've been there with about 150,000, and that came close to ending any pretext of useful work in the city.

...and a whole generation of patriots who saw a world of difference between rebelling against foreign rule, as they did at Lexington and Concord, and rebelling against a duly constituted, frame of American government. As long as the system is working and open to popular pressure, it is right to work in the system to apply pressure for the right outcome and it is wrong to try and tear the system down as you seem to propose. We got rid of Nixon by demonstrations, not by rebellion. The heroes were lawyers and the only bullets were ballots, words, public opinion polls, and people gathering peacefully to support the country, not hijack it.

But I see that we're going to disagree here. I will only advise that you watch and always remember these coming months. You won't see Bush driven from office. You'll see something even better. You'll see an electorate between now and November finally (finally!) forcing their representatives to grow backbones and kicking record numbers of Republicans out. You'll see Republican rats like Libby jumping ship and backstabbing their way to clear ground and trying to act like they never abandoned the Bill of Rights. This will be a historical election, if we hold the Dems' feet to the fire. That's what I call people power--not just fucking up a bureaucrat's commute to work for one day.

94. Americans in the mid 1700s did NOT think they were part of Britain.
You don't get to just make up facts in the middle of an argument.

American revolutionaries consistantly referred to rule from overseas as rule from outside their own country. They thought of themselves as Viginians, Carolinians, New Hampshirites, Yorkers, etc. They thought of their respective colonies as their countries, just like the Irish did (they rebelled in 1798, but lost) and some Scottish nationalists did in their rebellion of 1745 (also lost, tho the story is more complicated than just that).

I don't think Hawaii is ruled by foreigners. It's rule by the Hawaiian voters. See, not being able to vote is one of those justifications for insurrection I was talking about. Google "no taxation without representation" for more insight on this topic.

Finding out that the president committed a crime is NOT a justification for insurrection (until he proves willing to break the law to avoid prosecution, of course).

Bush is not responsible for paying of Veteran's Benefits (which is, yes, a good thing) or paying social security (another good thing). Bush is actually against these things. By trying to shut down the government, you'd be fulfilling Bush and Rove's dreams. I simply don't understand the need of some people on this board to attack fellow Democrats when they don't hop on board for the most extreme and counterproductive expressions of Bush hatred.

I dislike the president. But I'm not so hateful of him that I'm willing to fuck up payments to social security and veterans and research grants and arts grants and education programs to express my hatred. Frankly that's the sort of shit the fundy Republicans are supposed to favor, not us.

Who's going to NYC on the 29th? Some of us Kansas City area DUers are flying in on Sat. morning and were hoping to come up with a central meeting location for DUers! Wouldn't it be great if we could all march together? I so look forward to our Sunday afternoon protests here in town, you know, hanging out with good and caring people who "get it". It gives me hope, when little else does. The National protests make me euphoric!! Sounds weird, I know, but I so need HOPE!! Do you think it's unrealistic to walk in block at the march?? Just a thought.

I say wait until after the election. If things turn out in our favor, all well and good. If they rig the vote, we go and demand a re-vote with hand-counted, voter-verified paper ballots. No matter if it takes a month to count them all.

Besides, that'll give me time to order the 8-foot pole I'm going to use as a base for all protest signs in the future. ;)
