NOVAK: "Tom DeLay ranks as the greatest legislator of his time"
Tom DeLay ranks as the greatest legislator of his time

By ROBERT D. NOVAK

BEFORE Tom DeLay suddenly let it be known Monday night that he would resign from Congress, the word in Republican circles had been that he envisioned a post-leadership career in the House as an Appropriations subcommittee and perhaps eventually full committee chairman. Such a role as a dispenser of federal pork would seem paradoxical for the congressional embodiment of the conservative movement.

DeLay's 11-term House career now coming to a close was filled with paradoxes. He must be ranked with the great legislative leaders of all time, such as Thomas Brackett Reed, Robert A. Taft and Lyndon B. Johnson. Nobody has been as effective in enacting the conservative agenda into law, which explains the intense opposition to him. The House has been a different place since he stepped down as majority leader six months ago, easier to go along and get along for members of both parties.

that Lyndon Johnson's legacy as a legislator includes the Civil Rights Act, voting rights, medicare, and so much more that helped define us for a brief moment in time as a "great society". Sadly, DeLay's legacy is one of corruption, greed, and regarding the people of the United States as nothing more than the vermin he honed his skills on in his early days. Novak is a partisan hack and a fool, squawking from the margins of relevancy.

8. If Delay is convicted of a crime is he still a great legislator? If so
then is a law breaking legislator what we want from now on? I thought we all wanted honest politicians.

Novak and all the right wing kool aid drinkers feel that republican law breaking is fine by them as long as they get their agenda passed. That is the mark of a great repub legislator.

15. This from the greatest Benedict Arnold of our time?
Although, to be fair, I hear what he's saying. DeLay has been very effective as a legislator for his agenda. Though I would say that without Gingrich's previous work, DeLay would have had nothing to work with.

And there's that little thing about the law. DeLay was highly successful because he did not follow the law of the land. He cheated. Like Ben Johnson on steroids, he turned in a great performance largely by gaining an unfair advantage over the honest people he competed against. And his cheating meant that he stole the democratic rights of representation from the people he was supposed to represent. He won by breaking laws, bypacking courts, by taking bribes and bribing others, because he believed his will, not the will of the People, should be done. And at last the law and the will of the People are disposing of him.

He was a great legislator, but a terrible Representative of the United States of America.
