WATCH THE SPIN ---> Cheney resigns and McCain steps in
This is how the leak fiasco has a good chance of playing out....

Cheney will admit that he said "The President authorized disclosure" even though Bush* didn't.

Bush gets to claim plausible deniability and "fires" the leaker as previously promised.

Since it's "ALL Cheney's fault!", Bush* is absolved of ANY wrongdoing.

McCain replaces Cheney with ample time to stump before the midterms.

Cheney returns to Halliburton to oversee those juicy war contracts.

McCain continues boot-licking to become the heir apparent to the WH throne in 08.

And they all live happily-ever-after. :sarcasm:

... that neither the President nor I could disclose a CIA agent's identity ... " :eyes:

2. I wonder though if Fitzpatrick has demonstrable evidence on hand
that prompts a grand jury indictment of the vice president.

In which case it would not do Cheney that much good to step aside.

But if Cheney were to leave, Bush would have to appoint somebody who could sail through the Senate without serious challenge on one hand and on the other, be slimey enough to work in the Bush White House.

It could be a tough row to how.

3. That's how they did it with Nixon and Agnew
That's how they should do it again. It is the only way to maintain some continuity of government.

7. Good point. I guess Josh Bolten would be able to manage it somehow.
But do you think it would be John McCain?

And do you think he'd take the job?

I just don't see McCain leaving the relatively easy world of the Senate, where he's a big media star, to hop aboard a sinking ship.

13. I doubt McCain will make it that far
He's got way too much baggage and he has been 'too' supportive of Bush.

30. It would be an opportunity though for McCain to get even after
Dubya and KKKarl smeared him in 2000.

Dubya, gasping for air and sinking in quicksand, reachs to the GOP's "star" to come aboard and be veep to "save" the administration.

"Can't George," McCain says. "I'm kind busy raising that illegitmate child I had with a black woman. But hey, thanks for the offer."

15. Would McCain take the job?
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 06:22 PM by LunaC
OF COURSE he would! It would be his vindication after the 2000 smear job. They "owe" him and he's been waiting for his moment in the spotlight for a very, very long time!

28. I hear you on the points but what I meant and should have said
better is, if McCain took the job he would preside over a failed and collapsing administration and upon taking the oath of office for VP, he's lose his luster as a "maverick," an "independent."

Wouldn't that be almost a kiss of death for someone with McCain (undeserved) independent reputation?

What about this one?.....We win the house and the senate in 06...impeach BOTH Bush and Cheney......call for a special election via congressional resolution (hell Bush/Cheney made their own laws, why can't congress who's job it is to make laws)......and live happily every after under a Democratic administration full of great Dems.

Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 06:30 PM by LunaC
And there's McCain, conveniently waiting for his "due", only too eager to pardon them all as his way of saying "thanks!".

18. Easier than that, just have a friendly Congressperson with a
friendly Governor resign. Gore or Kerry moves to their state, is appointed to fill the vacancy, is elected Speaker and hey! presto! we have someone we actually elected.

6. Two myths:
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 06:04 PM by longship
Myth #1: Hillary is the front-runner for 2008.
Hillary isn't running (yet) so she cannot be the front runner.

Myth #2: If Cheney resigns, ChimpCo will appoint McCain as Veep.
Is there any indication in ChimpCo's previous actions which would let somebody think that they would appoint anybody but another total lunatic for Veep to replace Cheney? Is there any indication what-so-ever that ChimpCo would appoint a guy as Veep who has a reputation of "going off the script" and of being a "loose cannon"?

I can't see anything in ChimpCo's previous behavior that would indicate that they'd appoint anybody but another lunatic right winger. Somebody like Brownback, only it can't be Brownback because Governor Sebelius would then appoint a Dem to replace him.

Unabashedly right wing and somewhat stealthy.

Hell, he's even been kissing Falwell's ass, proving he's a "good soldier" that will follow orders and suck-up to The Base.

Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 06:39 PM by longship
I indicated that McCain wasn't a confirmed right winger.

Also, there's this problem. If ChimpCo appoints McCain as Veep, Governor Napolitano gets to appoint his successor which will most certainly be a Democrat.

24. But if McCain appeases the Rabid Right
They'll figure one measly more Dem in Congress isn't any big whoop.

I personally think the Pugs are going to lose the Senate but the Mayberry Machiavellis have never been in touch with reality and are likely to believe they can overcome the current public sentiment of outrage and disgust.

29. ChimpCo doesn't like losing.
They would *never* give a Dem governor a Senate appointment. Furthermore, nothing they've done in the past five years shows any tendency to compromise on anything, let alone letting a Senate seat slip away from them.

If Cheney leaves, they will appoint a governor from a safe state, a House member from a safe district, or a Senator from a state with a Republican governor. The appointee will be a right winger, slightly stealthy, and would be a likely front runner in 2008 against Hillary.

My take? Let the Repugs continue to plan for a Hillary candidacy.

10. Cheney's ticker will start "acting up".. he resigns for health reasons
McCain "fills in"..and when he runs in 08, he picks Joementum as his running mate...

I can see McCain stating that he will serve only ONE term..Jebbie runs for congress and in 12, makes HIS run..

That's the republican possibility I see..:(

11. McCain isn't special
I personally don't believe there's any amount of groveling this man could do to win him a real seat at the table. If I'm wrong I'd happily eat my words. I think they'd go for a long-term team player, maybe a family friend.

They don't dare go that route again after Katrina. They need someone that comforts the public and McCain has a proven track record among Pugs that will put them at ease and quell the anger.

17. Revenge
It would be cool if they did just that, expecting McCain to play as he has been, and then he turns around on them and whallops them for the way they berated him in the 2000 primaries.

Okay -- back to the real world...

I wound up saying some of the same thing.

I wasn't trying to rip you off -- we just thought of the same McCain reaction.

Don't sue me -- I'm too damn old to make it worth your while.

Hat's off to ya. You beat me by a country mile.

has been bugging me. He was yakking wih someone about McCain, and just who is behind this 'push him into the spotlight and favor him'. Interviewe asked Imus if he knew, and Imus stated Yes, and that he would Not go into it on the air.

What the hell is going on? F the MSM that plays these games with us. Give us the Facts, damn it.
