After receiving top secret clearance, Flat Stanley was shown a report by White House Chief of Staff Andy Card.



President George W. Bush welcomed Flat Stanley to the Oval Office and asked him to say "hi" for him to all the school children when he returns to Chicago. The President told Stanley he wants young Americans to learn to read and pursue an education so they can fulfill their dreams.



Flat Stanley joined the Senior Staff meeting in the Roosevelt Room, where he "substituted" for National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

2. That is an activity that is really neat

Elementary school kids mail Flat Stanley around the country and everyone who gets him sends them a letter or postcard to let them know where he ended up. Some of the Flat Stanleys have been all around the world.

Of course, this person pictured here who received Stanley is illiterate so he won't be able to send a letter back to the kids who sent Stanley to him.

This is also one of my very favorite kids books. It was written in 1963, during the CIvil Rights struggle. I always wondered if the author, Jeff Brown, was trying to teach kids about tolerance. And that is another lesson the doofus el pretzeldente needs to learn.

5. I walked Flat Stanley all over New York.

I took his picture in Grand Central, taped to one of the lions in front of the NY Public Library, Federal Reserve, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall St., World Trade ruins, South Street Seaport, Chinatown, Little Italy, United Nations, Central Park, Times Square, Washington Square, Union Square, and more.

I refused to take him to the top of the Empire State Building on the way home because the line was so long. He had to view it from the outside.

Not only did he go to all those places, but he walked, so he saw everything between midtown Manhattan and the battery.

One of the things that most impressed the Ohio children who had sent him was that the Federal Reserve Building was made (partly) with Ohio sandstone.

8. I know. I thought of cheating.

:) My feet were tired. We were going to walk past the Brooklyn Bridge, but I thought: What kind of a report would that make? So I walked him up to the top.

I've given friends walking tours of New York, so why not Flat Stanley?

The report I sent back to Ohio was over an inch thick. Pictures with large explanatory captions, and a summary letter.

Flat Stanley was on his way to a wedding in Virginia. I thought New York sounded like his last hurrah, so I showed him the sights.

7. I got two Flat Stanley's while living in California.

I took them all over Oxnard and Ventura. Then I wrote letters describing the the agricultural areas with telling them about the crops. I even explained where Oxnard was located in relationship to Los Angeles. Both Flat Stanleys were courtesy of my niece and nephew while they were in elementary school.

Or were those separate visits?

I thought it was a great idea. I had Flat Stanley for only 4 days, so couldn't take him everywhere. He did attend a concert, but I can't remember if it was in Carnegie Hall.

I also tied him on a string at night and dangled him from my window so that I could take a picture of him with the Chrysler Building lit in the background. He had some risky adventures.

They traveled two or three years apart as my niece and nephew were born two or three years apart.

It's a fabulous concept.

"Our" Flat Stanley has been to Iraq with our good friend who is in the National Guard and all over the U.S.

One really cool one I saw was Flat Stanley taking a ride with the U.S. Olympic Bobsleigh team in Torino.
