Some of the slogans at Fred Phelps latest get together. What's really sick is that they seem to have coordinated with the freepers, so that said freepers might seem moderate.

Let me bottom-line it for you.

If I were to start a thread with the title, "<racial epithet> must die" without making very, very clear, straight up front, that this was a quote from someone I was then going to proceed to criticize, I would expect, at least, to have the thread locked, and I wouldn't be surprised if I were run out of town on a rail.

As noted, there are better ways to make the point you were wanting to make. The fact so many people have reacted negatively to this might be an indication that rethinking your strategy is in order. Drawing just any ol' attention shouldn't be the point and is often, as we see here, counterproductive.

I knew when I opened the post and read the first sentence what the thrust of your point would be. But then, I use as many of my brain cells as I can in life, sometimes getting into double digit brain power, and I'm very aware of the Rev. Phelps and his odious campaigns.

Setting aside the issues of the IraqAttaq and subsequent descent into collective criminal madness, and with the proviso I only skimmed through the text of the linked article, but on the face of it I have to say I'd side with the Freepers in this instance.

Whatever the collective guilt may be for what has happened in Iraq, villifying dead soldiers and harrassing their kith and kin is an odious act, and Rev. Phelps shows himself lacking in humanity each time he hits the streets in such "protests." That the Free Republic members have turned out in support of troops in general, and not (seemingly) to favor the current situation, is an admirable stance. Those who voluntarily choose to serve should not be subject to assinine abuse. (They should also be protected from being asked to engage in criminal behavior, but that's a topic for another thread.)

I have said on many occasions that George W's actions will break the spirit of the volunteer force, to our mutual detriment. But to pile on top of the official dishonor Bush forces the troops into, the added strains of idiots calling them names and applauding their deaths at their funerals is a burden no one, least of all the troops and their families, should have to endure. If actions such as the Free Republic's demonstration against the Phelpsbots help to put an end to their idiotic public ravings, then I'm all in favor of it. Same as I support the bikers who started to escort the funeral processions and keep themselves between the Phelpsbots and the mourners, revving their engines and spewing exhaust on the Phelps crew to drown them out and hopefully scurry them away from the gravesides.

There's another example of high humor in the piece: there's a photo of a freeper on a motorcycle who's captioned as being a "freeper chickenhawk." No shit. Last time I checked, almost all freepers were chickenhawks--but I never dreamed I'd see one admitting it. I wonder if they know what that means.
