20. the sad thing is, his version of Bush ...

... appears more thoughtful and competent than the actual guy. Even when he was playing Bush for laughs in that comedy show, Bottoms had him being patient with his staff when they messed up, and even tested people to make sure they'd know what to do in a crisis. Which is a lot more than the real Bush did!

And if you watch that "Time of Crisis" movie to the end -- when they sub in the news footage of the real Bush delivering that speech, it's completely jarring. In that role, Bottoms may not be the most charismatic presence (but consider how little they give him to work with!) -- however, he seems way more reassuring than Bush!

Haggis is Against All Enemies

Picking a project to follow up the either trite or brilliant Crash (and, since it won best picture, no one really cares about the haters, do they?), writer/director Paul Haggis has gone in an interesting direction: he's in final talks to direct Against All Enemies, an adaptation of Richard A. Clarke's condemnation of the Bush administration's handling of the threat posed by al-Qaida. Though Haggis won't be writing the screenplay himself, he's expected to "supervise" the next draft, which is in the hands of James Vanderbilt. Haggis himself is currently writing and will direct Death and Dishonor for Warner Brothers, and it's not clear which project will be made first.

Aside from its intensely political nature, what's interesting about a movie version of Clarke's memoir is its cast: George W. Bush, for example, is sort of a main character in the thing. Is Columbia actually going to hire someone to play him? What about Condoleezza Rice, and Donald Rumsfeld? While I'd be the first to admit that such a thing could work (Nixon, which is packed to the gills with portrayals of well-know politicians, is fantastic), the fact that the central figures of Clarke's book are still in the public eye complicates things. Will we, for example, be able to see a Bush on screen without giggling, and thinking immediately of SNL?

7. Will Ferrell, fer shure

It's not just his mocking portrayal on SNL and uncanny resemblance. He is so good at conveying confusion in his facial expressions and body language. Ferrell's wild and crazy characters are fueled by paranoia, fear and self-hatred. I would love to see Ferrell portray Bush's transition from adult adolescent drunkeness to rigid evangelical delusion. He could very convincingly display Bush's cruel, vengeful nature while actually making you feel some sympathy for the child who was raised by a cruel, vengeful mother.

His characterization would be a lot more sinister, I imagine. I recall "Natural Born Killers" (speaking of Oliver Stone) and how Harrelson could come off normal and even reasonable on the surface, and then go so cold and psychotic. To his way of thinking there were people who deserved to die, so he killed them. It could be a chilling portrayal. :hi:
