Poll: Bush approval at all-time low
BY RON FOURNIER
AP POLITICAL WRITER

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has hit new lows in public opinion for his handling of Iraq and the war on terror and for his overall job performance. Polling also shows the Republican Party surrendering its advantage on national security.

The AP-Ipsos poll is loaded with grim election-year news for a party struggling to stay in power. Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction -- the largest percentage during the Bush presidency and up 13 points from a year ago.

"These numbers are scary. We've lost every advantage we've ever had," GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio said. "The good news is Democrats don't have much of a plan. The bad news is they may not need one."

Democratic leaders predicted they will seize control of one or both chambers of Congress in November. Republicans said they feared the worst unless the political landscape quickly changes.

There is more at stake than the careers of GOP lawmakers. A Democratic-led Congress could bury the last vestiges of Bush's legislative agenda and subject the administration to high-profile investigations of the Iraq war, the CIA leak case, warrantless eavesdropping and other matters.

11. I'm not sure a terrorist attack would work anymore...
People keep bringing this up when something bad happens to the administration, but a terrorist attack would just about be the nail in the coffin for this administration. All the crap they've put this nation thru, it's all been under the premise to prevent terrorism -- to prevent another 9/11. So if another attack occurs, that whole excuse flies out the window.

30. I think you're right
Another terrorist attack would help the dems more than the repukes.
The reps are supposed to be real tough on it and taking care of it,
if there was another attack then that would prove that they
can't even do that. And well... at that point what can they say they
do? Give tax cuts to the rich?
Some one forgot to tell those idiots that the poor and middleclas
far out number the rich.
Another attack would be the last freaking straw and even the
average head in sand americans would take notice that the repukes
are all lying theiving ijits.

39. Clear Democrat plan: Save America from republican corruption,
republican fiscal irresponsibility, disastrous republican policies, republican failure to adequately protect our national security, restore US credibility among other nations and cultures that share our planet, reverse the deadly environmental destruction caused by republican greed and irresponsible policy, and to restore the democratic processes so deeply ravaged by the Republican Culture of Corruption.

Republicans have once again, as they have all to frequently done in the past, all but destroyed our democracy and the very framework of genuine representative government that had made the United States a bastion of freedom throughout the world in the past.

Once again, greedy, megalomaniac republicans broke it, and now, once again, it is the task of the party of responsibility, the Democratic Party, to fix what the republicans broke - which is, sadly, just about everything.

After we fix the disaster left in the wake of republican corruption, incompetence, and greed, we can once again progress on the course of unparallelled prosperity and security that was diverted and subverted by the theft of the election in 2000.

Democrats have a plan clearly outlined by necessity.

Republicans have nothing left but to wallow in the lingering pigsty of their endemic corruption.

42. That's the problem, isn't it?
They've already 'crossed the rubicon'. If one assumes that the crimes committed are up to and perhaps including *IHOP, there simply is no way these criminal bastards can allow an orderly succession of power.

They can:
a) try to steal the 06 election,
b) buy/blackmail enough Democrats,
c) declare martial law after another *IHOPed attack.

I vote for (a) followed quickly by (c) if Congress goes to the Democrats. I suppose the extended scenario is (b) followed by (c) if they can't keep the D's under control.

I remember the day when I wrote to Ron Fournier in 2003 and asked him why the White House press didn't cover the fact that the president who was about to send American troops to battle had a family financial interest in war profiteering -- GHW Bush's business in the Carlyle Group. Fournier wrote back that he had never heard of the Carlyle Group, but would "look into it."

Ha. I pegged him then to be either lazy or disingenuous.

17. Here's the HEADLINE for the Daunted Dems of DC
Take heed:

"Democrats made their biggest national security gains among young men, according to the AP-Ipsos poll"

This is what happens when you start saying words like IMPEACHMENT and CENSURE out loud. When you show even the slightest signs of backbone.

But the "talk only" bump will fade quickly. And older men are not so easily swayed.

Yes, it's really necessary to DO SOMETHING. You must make the accusation, then follow it through and exact the punishment.

This is the show of strength that "the demographic" respects and responds to. (Even if they disagree with everything else you say and do.)

Go ahead Shrummy. Focus-group it.

What liars. They try at every turn to downplay Dem influence. Media Matters just covered something about the Today Show's Lauer and Russert using the "don't have a plan" line while blatantly ignoring recently issued plans. This myth has to disappear soon, as more and more people become disenchanted with the people whose plans aren't working.

50. Why are you laughing?
"They" still have a stranglehold on all forms of our government and "They" still count the votes.

I still am not laughing.

I suspect deep down I am not alone.

85. Mr Pitt
I was making a comment on our situation. It wasn't meant as a dig at your post. If you took it that way I am sorry.

It used to be "Democrats don't have a plan." Now it's "not much of a plan." We're making progress!

58. Dems won't win either chamber of Congress without having a plan re:
vote integrity. A lot of shit can go down in the last few days/weeks prior to an election that can be pointed to as the reason the Repug's took a few elections that they weren't supposed to have.

59. "Mandate" Political Capital"
:yoiks: The "good" news is that repugs like too "think" the Democrats don't have a plan. The bad news for them is, that they know we DO have a plan and it will work, which leaves them screwed! :bounce:

76. Democrats are either very cowardly... or do they know something,
and choose to act cowardly?

And what do they know because some of us might want "in" too.

81. or, it's something much less
like not having a clue of how to take the advantage.

I trust Howard Dean as the head of our party, though. We need a coherent message to take back the houses of Congress in November, but someone has to bring enough of the interests together first and get them to agree to be united and focused. Bush has done a good deal for our party by kicking all of his nonsense up a notch. It would be nice to see some throwing down right about now from the rest of our Democratic leaders.

78. This was the only silver lining I could hope for after Bush won in 2004
This was it - that Bush would continue down his path of destroying our country and would take down the whole Republican party with him and we would have our big chance in 2006 to take back the House.

It's sad it had to happen this way. A Kerry victory would have made such a long term difference in the direction of our country in terms of Iraq, the Supreme Court and so many other issues.

But, here we are, right where we hoped we would be.

79. aren't you laughing too soon again, Mr. Pitt,
like in 2002 and 2004?

You're assuming elections in America are an honest process. Repugs will not lose power in November, I am sorry to tell you. They can't afford it.

Jail, you understand. It's all over. Diebold has taken care of it all, they keep both houses, regardless of polls.
