10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America is an expansive, 10-part television event produced and directed by Oscar® and Emmy® award-winning filmmakers.

There are powerful days that make up the fabric of America's history. Some are big and explosive, while others are understated and unexpected. Their importance is realized later as we recognize how they set our nation on the path to what it is today. 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America is an exciting and thought-provoking series of films that renews a sense of understanding of and appreciation for the history of our great nation.

In support of these special presentations, The History Channel introduces the 10 Ways to See America Sweepstakes. 10 winners plus a guest will have the opportunity to take a 7-day/6-night trip to a place that unexpectedly changed America. Edited to add:

The Series

10 DAYS THAT UNEXPECTEDLY CHANGED AMERICA is not intended to be a countdown or a list of the most important days in U.S. history. The History Channel challenged the filmmakers to go beyond the predictable, and to think about different and interesting ways to illuminate familiar and lesser known events that would be intriguing to our audience.

37. The Union victory at Gettysburg took 3 days
so they couldn;t include that either. Kind of shorted us on the Civil War, didn't they?

3. 9/11
I'm new here. Is there a particular reason why we can't discuss 9/11, and alternates to the official line on it?

6. 9/11 Dungeon
I see. So, 9/11 complicity issues are not to be discussed out in the open on this forum. Why is that?

5. Nope
The producers said they didn't want to do the typical "Events That Changed America" series, on events everybody already knows about. As one of them said, (and I'm paraphrasing), "We didn't want to do the umpeenth documentary on Pearl Harbor".

New York Times review.

History Channel offering. Probably lots of juicy history in these films. I assume that they will probably make Americans think of their country in a new way after watching them.

22. I think that 23,000 includes the injured as well as dead.
I'm pretty sure that the number KIA was approximately 3650.

16. Probably because it led to the Emancipation Proclamation.
Lincoln needed a victory to make the proclamation. He got it at Antietam. Even though McClellan frittered away the chance to destroy Lee's army.

21. Lincoln could care less about slavery
Lincoln would have left the blacks in the same boat if he could have gotten a deal with the South to keep the Union together.

after a few years of progress, blacks were reduced to second class citizens thanks to Jim Crowe laws and the Reconstruction of the racist South

Now days using the War on Drugs is another tactic used to justify a war on the poor, with blacks more likely to be sentenced for the same 'drug crimes' committed by their white counterparts.

32. cept that if they'd counted the votes, 911 would never have happened
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 05:43 PM by Gabi Hayes
Gore would have been doing something about AlQaeda from DAY ONE, and that Aug 6 PDB would have pushed him to go public (or at least force the Airlines to beef up security), to the extent that the highjackers would NEVER have been able to force the plane into buildings, had the public (or at least the flight crews) been warned that these would NOT be the sort of highjackings to which we'd become 'accustomed,' but ones which would have turned the planes into flying bombs

30. Of course I am not surprised
People in GD, with their remarkable reading comprehension skills, are missing the word "UNEXPECTEDLY" in the feature's title.

Unexpectedly.

I am quite sure when 9-11 was happening, we knew it was going to change things massively. Same with other watershed days in U.S. history.

I am waiting for someone to be indignant because July 4, 1776 didn't make the cut. :eyes:
