Poll question: Roses or Donations?
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 02:43 PM by Pryderi
I thought the "Roses for Helen" was a wonderful idea, however, I'd rather send money to people like Nick Lampson or other progressive/democratic candidates.

1. There needs to be a "Other" option.
Roses to Helen Thomas made sense. Donations sent to her would not.

Political candidates running for office would benefit more from donations. People who represent the best of America should get roses, or some other token of appreciation.

2. The money spent on those roses for Helen keeps on giving
And it makes a point no political candidate seems to have the guts to say.

That being said, every single candidate I've donated money to has disappointed me.

I think the roses make a very, very strong statement. They also get a lot of press.

6. I agree
I really can't believe people object to our sending roses to Helen Thomas. Some people have no soul.

I have donated 100 times more money to candidates that I donated to the roses.

5. It depends on the situation
There was no way to donate money to Helen. Of course, a donation could have been made in her name, but she gave most of the roses to the injured vets at Walter Reed Hospital, right? They made a lot of people happy, plus it was a very "visual" statement and you can't underestimate the impact of that. It left no doubt that Americans (at least some Americans) appreciate truth in journalism. Maybe it will inspire some other journalists to let go of their fear and start doing their job.

But ... if someone is in office (or running for office) and they do something that we respect and appreciate, then campaign donations would certainly be the better alternative.

JMHO :-)

7. Depends - Roses For Helen Was Excellent Idea
and DU got positive press as a bonus. Which is good for DU and future advertisers - There are so few in the press that can be rewarded - this won't be happening much.

Politician's want donations, pure and simple.
