If what the White House says is true, why wouldn't BushCo have just said so in 2003 or early 2004? Why did they let Judith Miller sit in jail? Why did they let Scooter Libby get his tit in a wringer over the leak if it was so important to let the American public know what was in the NIE? Did Bush or Cheney give Fitz this answer when asked? Did they offer to Fitz when questioned their current reasoning that the President, with a wave of his scepter, declassified the NIE when he authorized it's leaking? If what BushCo says is true, why have they not pardoned Libby?
The answer is, obviously, that they thought they did something wrong and tried to cover it up. Again, don't forget that they have known what Libby said in his testimony for weeks and they have had ample time to prepare this strategy. They did not know when or if this information would be made public, but they knew it could be and they had to be ready. Their defense does not make any sense at all.
