PIERRE, S.D. - Four incumbent Republican state senators appear headed for re-election without challenge.
Sens. Jay Duenwald of Hoven, Bob Gray of Pierre, Kenny McNenny of Sturgis and Mac McCracken of Rapid City were unopposed after Tuesday's deadline for party candidates to file nominating petitions. They will win new terms automatically unless someone files to challenge them by the June 6 deadline for independent candidates.
Sen. Jerry Apa, R-Lead, also faces no Democratic challenger, but independent Karen Ballert of Lead is running against him for the seat.
Even though the Democratic Party is not contesting five Senate seats, the party has done a much better job of fielding candidates than it did in previous years. Two years ago, Democrats gave up 10 of the 35 Senate seats without a fight, and it had no candidate for a third of the House seats.
