A. We share a border with them.
B. There are millions of them here illegally.

I've watched these 'debates' very closely and 80% of the time it's the opponents of border controls who narrow the issue to Mexico. So be it ...

Over one-sixth of all citizens of Mexico reside in the US, more than one-half without immigration authorization.
No other nation on the planet comes close in 'hosting' as many immigrants, legal or illegal.
No other nation on the planet has so many of its citizens living in a neighboring country.

Is Mexico the sole source if illegal immigrants in the US? Nope. But if you have an elephant with diarrhea, five cats, and 10 gerbils shitting on your living room rug, which one would you work hardest to remove from the room???

Recently, CNN reported that Vincente Fox was suffering lowered approval ratings among his electorate because he had not yet 'delivered' on his campaign promise to obtain amnesty for Mexicans illegally residing (and working) in the US.

In what kind of Malice in Blunderland world does the President of a country have, as a higher objective, the job of making it easier for the citizens of his country to live in another country ... but not have the higher-priority job of fixing the appalling economic inequities in his own country? It's not because the economic opportunity in the US is so great as much as it is that the economic opportunity in Mexico is so abominably bad! The conditions in both countries are now under the nearly total control of predatory corporatists.

Is racism a factor in this situation? Of course. It's part of every inequitable condition in this nation, as well as other nations. Many racists want more illegal Mexican immigrants - because they're CHEAP! Other racists want them to be paid even less.

But if we want to look at racism, look also to Mexico. The poor are predominantly people with indigenous ancestry and oppressed minorities in their own country!
