Did they out Plame because SHE knew too much?
Did they out Plame because SHE knew too much?
dKos diarist clammyc reminds us of some important context to the Iran war drumming:

With all this talk about how dangerous Iran is and how they are THIS CLOSE to getting nook-you-lur weapons and must be stopped, let's not forget that Valerie Plame and her colleagues were tracking distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology to and from Iran.

....................

What if it wasn't an accident? What if they outed her not (or not just) to get at her husband, but to get at her?

Think about the demonstrated disdain of Bush and Cheney for any and all intel that contradicted their preordained conclusions about Iraq. Then think about the neocon arrogance that then, as now, targeted Iran as next on their regime change to-do list.

In that context, Valerie Plame's knowledge of what was really going on in the WMD arena did not make her an asset -- it made her a very dangerous woman. When Joe Wilson went public with the truth about the way the Administration cooked the books on Iraq, the Administration must have been concerned that Valerie Plame would do the same when they turned their guns toward Iran.

What if they wanted us to think that their purpose was to smack Joe Wilson, but only as a smokescreen for their next Crusade? Maybe I'm overly impressed with Karl Rove's legendary ability to think five moves ahead, but he loves these kinds of two-birds-one-stone stunts.

Tin foil hat, anyone?

1. DUers have said for some time now that she was getting close
to Cheney's dirty dealings in nuclear materials in the region, and had to be stopped.

7. I agree
....the stakes seem too high to get "a wife"....what the wife was doing and what she was finding out was important ..I do believe and have always believed that they wanted Brewster/Jennings who was investigating Weapons of mass destruction in IRAN.. out of the way.
And the recent "White HOUSE aid"....who said that the leak was "pure revenge"...they want us to believe that ...that it was just revenge instead of getting Brewster out of the way in IRAN.

8. There was an article a while back which pointed out her group
keep track of IRAN's nuclear material. Sure comes in handy now - no one to tell anyone how much a threat Iran really is. Some coincidence huh? Right. Kill 2 countries with one outing.

Outed CIA officer was working on Iran, intelligence sources say

IranThe unmasking of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson by White House officials in 2003 caused significant damage to U.S. national security and its ability to counter nuclear proliferation abroad, RAW STORY has learned.

According to current and former intelligence officials, Plame Wilson, who worked on the clandestine side of the CIA in the Directorate of Operations as a non-official cover (NOC) officer, was part of an operation tracking distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology to and from Iran.

Speaking under strict confidentiality, intelligence officials revealed heretofore unreported elements of Plame's work. Their accounts suggest that Plame's outing was more serious than has previously been reported and carries grave implications for U.S. national security and its ability to monitor Iran's burgeoning nuclear program.

20. kpete, thanks for all your work
I've been too busy to do much more than observe, but you have been posting great posts. All the bruhahaa lately ignores the actual leak of an undercover agent working on wmd. Bushco has had to minimize her importance to make this go away, and today's news tries to keep the cover going by pushing it to the national security estimate, staying far away from Plame. If the crooks in t
the White House are ever brought to justice we might learn more.

Again, thanks for your work in this and many other issues.
