It's out now, and Libby has pretty much verified what everyone's worst expectations had been for a long time: either Cheney, or Bush and Cheney did it. It's not as if this is some revelation out of the blue, so everyone knows exactly how it all happened and what it means. No need for the media to tread trepidatiously in their reporting. And this is what we get:
NBC Nightly News: this was a presidential decison to declassify some of their pre-war Iraq intelligence in order to counter criticism over the war.
Their only expert opinion interview snippet: This was a mistake by the 'public relations aparatus' in the White House.
I bet you could get a thousand expert opinions that wouldn't sound anything like that.
They know exactly what kind of message they're sending to the majority of Americans with this kind of characterization: just politics, complicated, arcane 'declassification' legalities, public relations.
Republicans outed a CIA operation as retaliation for someone exposing their lies to go to war. Bush did it himself and lied religiously about it every step of the way.
How close is the corporate media's spin to that reality?
